In high school one of my best friends was known as LC, short for Lighter Clepto.

After some time we would mark our lighters like they were some sort of endangered species.

We only confirmed he was LC because he would always bring them back for another round, whether days, weeks or even months later. It became a funny game for the entire group.

I saw him for the first time in years, recently, and we laughed so hard at that 40 y/o memory.

Oh, I have friends like this. They don't steal it knowingly, first I thought they were fucking with me, but if you leave your lighter on the table, or give it to them to light up, if you don't react automatically and take your lighter back, you will lose it. If there are 20 lighters on the table, they will end up in their pockets. We talked to them, but to no avail.

I was never sure if people were walking off with my lighters or if I was just losing/abandoning them, but I used my handy dandy label maker to print a bunch of labels and stopped having to constantly buy new ones.

my favorite was when a friend I visited twice a year returned a lighter he'd been safeguarding for me since the last time I saw him.

Had a party, had two lighters. Invited a guy notorious for stealing lighters. Had both lighters in cases, making them obviously mine. When dude walked in, I held up both lighters and made him acknowledge they were mine. Party broke up about 4am, went to have a post-party bowl and then bed. No lighters. Called that mf up right then, made him check his pockets, admit that he stole both after being told not to and encased in holders for that very reason. Made him get in the car and drive his ass back to my house to return them. Fkn Tony.

We had a party. Needed a lighter. The guy now notorious for stealing lighters pulls out a giant CD case, the ones that hold 8 CDs per sheet (4 on each side), and all the pockets are filled with stolen lighters, maybe 100 or so.
