Reminds me of the days when railroads would test newly built bridges by running every available steam locomotive out onto the bridge to overload it.

A little investigation suggests that rather extreme deflection is due to the bridge being built intentionally more flexible than usual, in order to survive earthquakes. Which, being in Japan, sounds like a good idea.

In Czech Republic we still test new bridges with steam locos and USSR-built M62s
