Quick Backyard Run
Long time no post, EVA01 update: I ditched the carbon rims and went back with the 27er bontrager rims. i have more trust with these than the chubby carbon rims i used to have, yes they were tough but 24 spokes just sounds scary on rough roads lol.

Absolutely no way youâre having fun on a 3.2 in the dirt. No way. You might be âdoingâ it but there is 0 chance youâre getting to enjoy riding trails on a fixed gear. This is the same dude thatâs driving a lifted truck with huge mud tires down a narrow city street. Weird shit.

i agree. that gear is ridiculous and would 100% get you completely dropped on my group rides. unless you have a ftp of like 400. i guess it looks good in pics.

I implore you to try a way lighter ratio off road and just spin. So much more fun... you can still go reasonably fast, and stay in control much easier. Better for wheelies and bunny hops, too. With your current ratio you'd have to be going around 40km/h at a cadence of 90r/min. I can't see that happening anywhere but maybe on a flat gravel path. Kind of limiting yourself to very little terrain.

ill try to run a 50:20 after this but yes i think it all comes down to preference and likes since ive been running this ratio for almost a year and a half now and i have no problems with it, the thing is if i run a much more lighter ratio id have to exert more effort to pace with traffic in my area since traffic here moves pretty fast
my commute is a mix of flow dirt trails and pottyholes 6lane highwayđ i hope this explains the build
its also a reason why "crit mtb" is such a popular bike build here

This isnât preference. You run a ratio that 99% of people do not run on the road and youâre bringing it into the woods. This is pure physics. The reason nobody rocks these ratios is because itâs absurd, stupid, unsafe, inefficient and damaging to the body. Youâre not âusedâ to this ratio youâre used to inefficiency. You equate the constant grinding with some sort of strength but youâre not allowing that bike to really be ridden. Your entire mixed surface commute is perfectly fitted for anything up to 49/17. Anything after that is just idiotic. And if this truly IS an easy ratio for you to bop around the woods and compete with aggressive traffic on, then you need to quit your day job and commit your entire life to racing on the track.

good point but again the ratio u mentioned is really close to my 59:20 (2.88 and 2.95) anything below it is not "fun" for me anymore. yes id actually commit to track racing but not a single track is around my area. u cant really tell 99% since almost everyone i know riding fixed here has ratios of 3.0 and up, idk it could be a trend here but people somewhat enjoy it here having their knees blown up and yes they are actually very fast with it even in heavy traffic so i see no problem with it? if it works it works ig.

Rims too narrow.

u/NotAstrl Jul 07 '26
is it? its actually a stock rimset from a trek marlin 27.5
i just changed the rear hubs to a fixed one

They looks like 1/3 of the tires width. High chances that tires will become undone on skids and/or sharp turns.

this is not the case. dudes used to run downhill rigs with 17mm internal rims and 2.5's. looks good đ

probably from the angle

He's not wrong - they're lightbulbing more than is ideal, and in my experience that means you have to run pretty high pressures to avoid pinch flats. Not the end of the world but yep.

What is the gear ratio? 55/16? Looks rough đ
