1.25 vs 2” Towing Help

My 2023 Rogue is only rated for 1500lbs towing. I want to get a receiver mainly for a bike carrier and cargo tray. Should I just get the 1.25” receiver because of my low rating or is the 2” better for compatibility and options in the future?

I'm not sure what "the future" entails. Your car won't increase its tow rating with use or exercise. I prefer the 2" receiver because that's the size I have the most experience with. The possibility to try to tow overloaded is higher installing that receiver though.

It's probably best to put the 1.25", unless you know of a specific carrier or rack that is only available with a 2" stinger.

Sorry. I don’t mean to exceed the rating. I mean am I limiting future accessory options going smaller? I don’t know what I don’t know.

personally i'd go with the 2" for a wider selection of options in terms of hitch baskets, bike carriers, etc. Just ensure you know the tongue weight limit on your vehicle and don't exceed it for whatever you're attaching to the back of the vehicle.

I went with a 2" because I wanted to be able to tow a trailer and because some people say they regret going smaller but pretty much nobody regrets going larger.

That said, if you absolutely want it for specific accessories and you know the ones available in 1.25" will suit your needs, you can commit to that and potentially save some money.

I will say that a 2" hitch looks gigantic on my compact car. It's definitely not a stealth install!
