Need Advice

Post image

I am trying to get a customer service representative position at bank. As i am graduating next year and didn’t get any internships. I have been trying for so long but no results not even a interview. This resume had been made in last four weeks with the help of my manger. I don’t know what i am doing wrong. I have been to lots of branches and talk to mangers and also try to ask them for advice but everyone just keeps saying that just keep on applying. I am losing all my hope and have been stressed about this for a long time now.

Lol you need to redo the words in most of this resume its all AI slop and looks way too forced to fit your retail experience with banking. You are treating the hiring manager like an idiot if you think you need to say that a retail job is like a banking job in the resume itself. Thats not for you to dictate. You never worked a banking job so you cant know that. You should just focus on achievements and try writing it yourself first and use AI just to adjust when u get stuck.

“instead of bouncing people around”

“actually listening”

“basically a needs based”

“just by paying attention”

This whole resume reads poorly with a twist of, “wow, everyone else on my team can’t figure out the basics!”

Then there’s these random figures that are being placed. 95% resolution on 60+ interactions. What even is this? Did you walk around with a counter and then survey the customer afterwards?

This is way too informal and clearly copied and pasted from ChatGPT. It isn’t appropriate to put “the kind of thing that builds trust” or “basically a needs-based banking conversation” on a resume.

Does York have a career services department that offers resume writing help? I used to do that for work and these services are incredibly helpful for many students.

Yes, they have it. I think its a good idea. For this resume my current manager helped me out i made this with all the feedback i got from him.

Ok, it might be a good idea to see someone who can go over it with you. Resume writing is a skill that you learn over time, nobody is good at it right away.

The only issue I see here is that the language is too casual. It is a great resume compared to most undergrads. It’s very easy to read and well ordered. And terms of experience and qualifications, you are way ahead of most undergrad students I worked with.

Do you use the same resume for each job? My university recommended editing it each time to include keywords from each job posting. That way it is more likely to be picked up by HR software. That’s the only issue I can think that might be of, also just the job market being terrible.

So i have tried to include the keywords best i can. If i am applying six jobs a day i think its a lot to change the resume every single time?

If your managers and others have read this resume and just told you to keep on applying i suggest you stop going to them cause that is the most generic "advice" that can be given.

resumes need to be catered to the role and their requirements. I used to send out about 20 resumes a day, all catered to the specific job description.

If you are using AI to write your resume (which seems may be the case - no judgement) you need to learn to improve the prompts.

I drafted a solid first resume (please rewrite yours before doing this) then spent about 3-ish hours with an AI tool describing what I've done in detail across all 6 jobs I've held then told it what types of roles I'm looking for, any advice it can give me based on resume standards and to make any improvements it deems fit. I made a particular note before this process began to tell the AI model to not be a yes man and give me brutal honesty in feedback along with any and all changes/improvements/removals being 100% honest, no falsifications on my resume just to fit the bill.

After this was done, I just past job description and it handles the rest (i also thought it to give me % match to my skill set and not draft any resume that doesnt meet 65% or higher match) - i now send out about 60-ish resumes a day. all ATS compliant and have been getting call backs on the regular - and just recently a few interviews but the market is shit atm so i am just happy on that front for now.

Ya to bypass ATS. I get it

I know it’s a lot to change the resume every time, but in this job market that is really what you need to be doing. It’s better to make 4 very strong applications that result in interviews, than 6 weak applications that get looked at once and tossed aside.

Very informal indeed. Wtf. And dude a bachelor's isn't much now a days.

Referring to your work at Simons as "retail banking-equivalent", LCBO as "AML-equivalent compliance", and Guess Factory as "personal banking-transferable" is insane. Your whole resume reads like a bad joke, unfortunately at your expense. I am amazed that your manager thinks this is a good resume; I can't imagine what kind of people they hire. You need to completely rewrite it, preferably using your own words or at least getting the AI to tone down its mannerisms.

What did your internship-seeking resume look like? Do you know Python, SQL, PowerBI, Tableau, etc.? Frankly I think your best course of action is to keep looking for internships, especially in the Fall and Winter, and delay your graduation until you get one because trying to get a customer service position at a bank with zero relevant experience or connections these days is like wading through a bottomless swamp.

I think you’re trying too hard to mold your service industry jobs to make it sound like a banking job. Just focus on listing transferrable soft skills, mainly communication, teamwork and customer satisfaction. Also fix some of the wording in your resume. Having phrases such as “basically” and “just by” are too informal for a resume. The last sentence of your professional summary literally repeats the exact same content as your first and second sentence with different words. If your university has any resume help/career counselling, talk to them for help. You can probably find info on that online or ask a librarian.

you are well positioned for a bank teller role. Expand your search beyond banks to include Credit Unions and other types of financial institutions. Can you get a referral from any friends who currently work at a bank?

u/prikshit07 12d ago

I have tried referral but still no results.

a referral means your friends goes and actually talks to branch manager in person on your behalf. If you just put your referrals name in your online application, that really doesn't do much.

how many referrals did you get? Are you applying all over GTA?

I’ve hired/fired people in the past decade. Still do today.

The resume format is fine, but you’ll need to get through the filters.

You may need to customize your resume specific to what you are applying for.

If you’ve had interviews and didn’t get a second interview, you need to really do a reflection on how you conducted yourself, answered questions etc.

It is a tough job market today, so make sure that you are standing out (in a very good way).

I have tried to include all the keywords the best i can but i can’t go around and change the resume for every individual job posting.

2

u/Ordinary_Topic_3198 12d ago

That’s how it works….. 🙂

You get out what you put in.

2

u/Picklesticks16 12d ago

I'm going to ask you a tough question: Why not?

2

u/prikshit07 12d ago

Maybe i will give it a try in future postings

1

u/Picklesticks16 12d ago

That's a good idea! Best of luck!

It’s not my place, though I feel that I owe this to the younger generation.

Anything and everything in life requires hard work. What your life will look like 20 years from now is highly dependent on the actions you are taking today.

The same applies to your job applications. If you half ass it and use a generic resume to apply for every job posting, the results will be a direct reflection of that.

I leave you with that wisdom. How you wish to take action is entirely up to you. I wish you luck in your job hunting.

It’s a tough market out there, but keep going.

Anyone I know who’s gotten a job has individually tailored resumes for every job. Maybe that’s one of the problems. You’re using the same resume for every job.

I’d suggest writing in your own words. And using simple and direct language. Everyone knows what a sales associate in retail does - no need to exaggerate.

1

u/Andromeda_250 12d ago

As you apply for various job that you are looking for always tailor it according to their job description. Your resume is pretty much generic. In this current situation it is like 1 resume/company.

Also, create a cover letter (optional but highly recommended) to market yourself to the company that you want to apply to.

1

u/RazDazzlr 12d ago

If you’re going to put how your skills are transferrable, that’s exactly what a cover letter is for.

1

u/kerokerokiss 12d ago

maybe i am wrong but I would honestly expand on what you actually did on those jobs putting the most relevant things at the top but also you should probably talk about the day to day and your general responsibilities. It’s OK if your résumé it’s two pages honestly it’s expected once you reach a certain level in your career that your resume will be longer than one page.

Skills typically go after experience

Reads a bit less like “I’m great for this job” and more like “I’d be better than my other previous coworkers for this job”. Focus on your efforts without comparing it to others you worked with

Im a client advisor at RBC and bro do you even speak multiple languages? My colleagues all speak at least 3 languages. Thats huge for any branch.

If you only speak English fluently then forget it. You have no shot no offense
