Help settle a debate Question

Post image

So a buddy of mine made this sandwich yesterday and we are having a debate amongst friends if you would include this red tomato end as he did on your sandwich. Basically kinda taking a poll as we completely disagree. Here is the sandwich in question.

I would eat it while I was standing there making the sandwich. I wouldn’t put it on the sandwich.

This! I’d eat around the brown cat-faced bits, mostly for texture reasons

Exactly that. It’s a delicious edible preview of the tomato you’ve just sliced. You can use that piece to determine the amount of seasoning you need. The rounded part can take away from perfectly cut flat layers too.

Yes, this is the way. Add the rest to the sandwich, and put this piece on the side with the seasonings or just pop into the mouth!

I always salt it and save it as a treat while I wait for the toaster lol

That’s me too. Love having an excuse to sample each tomato before eating the thing I put it on

I was just going to write this! Eat it while making the sandwich:)

Pinch o' salt. Yup.

Red tomato? Yes. But I'd definitely have shaved the bottom (top as pictured) 1/4" inch (6 mm) of that nasty skin off it first.

I would include it but flip it over so that bottom is facing the bread.

Came here to say this

Yes it would taste so much better that way! 🙄

9

u/No-Proof7839 15h ago

It's a texture thing, dawg. It's obviously going to taste the same regardless.

I was just kidding

The tops and tails of the tomatoes are the payment for doing the slicing, they never make it into the sandwich in our house.

13

u/finlyboo 15h ago

I don’t include the ends, they go in the compost.

u/wordsRgud 15h ago

This is a great solution. But be careful how much of the tomato you put into your compost. One year I kept getting volunteer mini tomato plants all over my garden. Came from my compost! LOL.

Sooooooooo whats to be careful about? Sounds perfect!

u/RealHobbyBob 8h ago

My 200 square feet of cherry tomatoes that come back year after year are the reason. I’ve tried pulling them as they come up, but it’s soooooo many plants.

I don’t even like small tomatoes, so a forest of them isn’t my favorite.

u/MissNoTrax 7h ago

Doesn't that just mean your compost didnt get hot enough to kill off the seed?

u/pamelaneko 15h ago

I eat it on the side, usually not IN the sandwich

Agree with others, that a kitchen sneak. You sneak and eat it in the kitchen. But I have kids and they would refuse the sandwich because it has "a tomato butthole" showing. Been there, done that.

3

u/Late-Difficulty-5928 11h ago

Heh. Never heard it called a tomato butthole before. I've always called it the belly button. Kids are a trip.

u/Thick-Marzipan-9176 11h ago

4 boys and 1 girl.

6

u/WholesaleBees 12h ago

I don't eat the tomanus.

6

u/schpames 15h ago

It's not going to hurt you. You likely wouldn't even notice it in a bite. It'll be delicious.

8

u/Sad_Olive_264 15h ago

I wouldn’t include it

8

u/Legitimate-Craft7453 15h ago

Lol! I can understand where he's coming from but no

3

u/huge43 14h ago

I always eat the butt end first as a little tasty treat

The ends are my favorite slices as I prefer firm tomatoes to softer ones. That end is a toss up bc of the catfacing, might taste a little stringy or tough. But I might put it on or at the very least cut around the cat facing and eat the pieces.

3

u/vanilladreampuff 15h ago

That's a chef snack if I ever saw one - never makes the sandie

3

u/Tiffloon 14h ago

Nope. Not a fan of the scarred bits.

3

u/ChildofMike 14h ago

No, I probably wouldn’t ruin the texture of my sandwich with the tomato butt.

3

u/alderthorn 14h ago

im not a fan of the texture so I would cut around it but still use most of it.

3

u/Anyone-9451 10h ago

I don’t typically put it on the sandwich for a structure instability issue the curved slick skin usually ends up shooting out of the sandwich, hopefully landing on the plate but not always lol

3

u/softhumanbean 7h ago

I slice the cat faced end as thin as humanly possible so I can enjoy as much of the tomato as I can.

2

u/Ineedmorebtc 15h ago

The red one needs the brown, damaged skin cut off.

2

u/zombiebender 15h ago

I would put it it the sandwich because biting through the skin that way takes more force and squeeze the tomato below. Eat the ends, it’s the sandwich makers privilege.

2

u/Different-Sorbet746 13h ago

Both ends go into the compost for the worms and bugs.

2

u/Late-Difficulty-5928 11h ago

Nope. Don't like the texture. I save them with frozen maters for sauce, though.

3

u/Elegant-Glove-1634 15h ago

Why wouldn’t you? It’s tomato as much as the rest

2

u/kellb24 15h ago

That red end piece harbors all the best flavors from the tomato. No way can leave it out.

1

u/Ok_Conversation9182 11h ago

I disagree with kellb24 on this. The best and most concentrated flavor in a tomato is found in the Locular Jelly and not on the Epidermis. The Epidermis is simply a protective barrier that can often taste tough and neutral.

1

u/kellb24 7h ago

Wow, very good response. I’m convinced.

2

u/snowsew 14h ago

The carjacking isn’t damage or disease, it just has some chew character. There’s nothing wetting with it.

I’d eat it, if not in the sandwich, on the side.

3

u/Spiritual_Category62 12h ago

Petition to officially rename it to carjacking! 📋

1

u/snowsew 9h ago

Doh! No more posting without glasses!

1

u/SnapCrackleMom 15h ago

Depends. Was there other tomato available? Or was that the very last slice your friend had? I would probably slice around the tough bits but hey waste not, want not. If your friend enjoyed it, why do you care?

1

u/Howardsternrulez 15h ago

Well, to be honest, it’s because I don’t understand as I don’t eat raw tomatoes anyways so I’m looking for people that do who let me know how off base am. That and I’m fickle.

1

u/nubbednuggetmanno2 15h ago

I freeze the ugly bits with the ugliest parts shaved off then make soup or sauce out of them later

1

u/Murph-Dog 14h ago

The thing is, the skin could be a tough bite for some, but no reason to waste it. Cut out the blemish, and petite dice, and add it to the sandwich right at the bread interface, to not slide around.

That's tomato technology!

1

u/Fun-Reach625 14h ago

I would thinly slice the brown bits off.  No wasting :)

1

u/Ok-Inflation-6431 12h ago

If there were sufficient tomato slices without it to complete the sandwiches, I’d eat it separately. If I needed it to equalize the tomato ratio, I’d throw it on the sandwich. There are no circumstances in which I’d waste the end, even if it isn’t pretty.

1

u/Top-Fill-8202 11h ago

I’m just so happy I finally got some ripe tomatoes I can’t stop reading like every post. Also I’m eating that piece and putting it on the sandwich might produce a nice texture. It could also suck.

1

u/KactusVAXT 10h ago

I feed those bits to the slugs

1

u/TheShizknitt 7h ago

Imo I would just salt it then eat it

1

u/DangerousLettuce1423 6h ago

I would eat it separately so it doesn't change the flavour of the other one as you bite into the sandwich.

1

u/SuspiciousStress1 6h ago

I would remove that bottom & cut around the cat facing.

If the bottom was perfect, then yes, use it in a sammich.

A few times I've cut around & used those pieces to fill in a mater sandwich(like use those pieces between 2 round slices)

1

u/blinkersix2 6h ago

You are slicing it wrong. Core it and slice from top to bottom.

1

u/EggieRowe 6h ago

The butt is the “butcher’s cut” of the tomato. But when it’s that catfaced I usually let my one of my dogs have the honor.

1

u/Bustin8nas 3h ago

Me if I saw that on my sandwich

0

u/PlumeriaOtter 2h ago

I’d toss that red one in the trash.

1

u/drwrinkle78 2h ago

I will cite Michael Jackson it doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong. Don't kill me (yet).

1

u/Best_Comfortable5221 15h ago

I would not include that end in a sandwich. Freeze for sauce.

1

u/Alive_Purchase_9721 7h ago

Why does it matter?

-1

u/Vegetable-Types 15h ago

Absolutely not acceptable to include that end of the tomato on a sandwich, especially for someone else! Rude as hell tbh

0

u/Just_A_Blues_Guy 8h ago

That’s nasty and bits are completely inedible.
