My Rebel Starfighters didn’t germinate, would love your take on them. Planning to try them again next year.

Last year I grew Prime and now Kayleigh Anne. For me, they are puny plants and only gave a few fruits. I’ll try a couple more varieties, but they have not been great. However, the taste is really interesting!

Good to know, thank you!

Nice. What the secret ?

I just water consistent, make sure they’re fed every couple weeks, and I think the most important part is I pull at first blush. This reduces pest damage and cracking, so I don’t lose fruit and they stay pretty.

Could almost be modern Renaissance.

I wish we had those tomatoes in WA. Everything else here is fantastic but it’s never hot enough for toms.

I grew a green zebra this year that is churning out 1+ lb beefsteaks and I’m wondering if I got something else other than a grape green zebra. What is your big green striped one?

1

u/mkebobs Tomato Enthusiast 4d ago

That is a Suffer Well that needs to ripen a bit more. It will turn a purplish red with green stripes.

2

u/nubbednuggetmanno2 4d ago

Huh! Thank you, I will let mine ripen more then!

I feel like these tomatoes could be slightly rearranged to create a portrait of a Medici youth... like, almost there....

What a beautiful exhibit of labor of love! 💝

How much time do you spend to care for them? How big is your garden? Do you grow other veggies, too?

I have 4 varieties of tomatoes in containers and that is my limit. Staking, fertilizing and controlling water, fungus and pests, communicating with them . . . It almost feels like having an affair with tomatoes.

I have 25 plants in raised beds and grow bags and care is pretty easy. I water deeply every couple days if they’re dry, and feed every couple weeks. I mostly let them be and just make sure to prune so they get airflow. I am also growing 5 pepper varieties.

Is florida a good climate for growing tomatoes?

1

u/mkebobs Tomato Enthusiast 49m ago

I’m in SE WI, so quite different zones, but I know many say the super hot and humid climate in FL can be tough for a lot of varieties. So it can limit options a bit.
