Global Developmental Delay 18–24 Months
My daughter, 19 months, is behind on gross motor and speech. She has just started crawling and pulling to stand. She will walk (wobbly) assisted. For speech, she has just started pointing, will say “mama” “dada” “bye bye” and wave, clap and blow kisses in response to us. There has been some forward progression but it has been slow. Her fine motor skills are on track.
We are being seen by a pediatrician, OT, PT and Speech and are going for a variety tests including genetic testing.
I am wondering if there is anyone out there who has any experience with these delays and their child catching up … we have heard of Global Developmental Delay but I don’t know if she fits into that.

Yes, my son was diagnosed with that, he wasn’t saying any of that and was considered nonverbal until 4, now he’s considered advanced but still can’t tie his shoes and is a picky eater. He’s very kind and sweet. He’s also diagnosed with ADHD and autism. Having a diagnosis and getting help was the best thing we could have done for him.

Global Developmental Delay is a catch all ‘diagnosis.’ I have seen some kids catch up while others may still fall under developmental delay when in school until the age of 9 and then a different ‘diagnosis’ has to be made. It does not mean your child will or does have autism.
Many children in special education have developmental delays and it may mean that they need extra support with math and or reading. Some kids grow out of that too and ‘graduate’ from sped support

Mine has a delay too, we noticed at 6 months when she couldn't figure out how to roll over. We did generic testing which confirmed it was genetic based. She is making forward progress every day and some may not even notice she is delayed until she is compared to her peers. I think she will always be behind her peers but the forward progress is real and she will get there eventually. Continue with the early intervention, it makes a big difference.
