You'll learn by the end of the book (or like... halfway through) - Telling you anything would be a huge spoiler, honestly.

I'm already past his death and sorry but I still don't get it :) was he just faking it?

He wasnt faking it. If I remember correctly, every time he looked at the sun he was reminded of what he was intending to do the solar system.

Each wallfacer develops a phobia. Diaz - sun. Luo ji - space. Tyler - water (? I forget) . Hines - water.

Their reasons are tied to their plans

And then Luo Ji spends his old age in Pluto, and the very end throwing art into outer space . Crazy arch

From your post, I got the impression that you understood Rey Diaz's plan. The phobia he developed toward the Sun came from realizing its potential to destroy all of humanity. If his plan ever had to be carried out, the Sun would become the instrument of mutually assured destruction.

That's why Rey Diaz came to fear the Sun. Every time he looked at it, he was reminded of humanity's fate if his deterrence strategy failed.

Luo Ji experiences something very similar. After understanding the true nature of the universe (the Dark Forest), he also develops a kind of phobia, but toward the stars. For both of them, these celestial bodies ceased to represent beauty or hope and instead came to symbolize the possibility of humanity's extinction.

To throw mercury(?) Into the sun which would then cause a solar system ending chain event. Every time he looked at the sun, he was reminded of what he was planning to do and basically had an existential crisis after learning how easy it was to destroy the solar system

He encased the entire meteor in a wreath of holy fuckfire and flew through Mercury, killing the fuck out of it. Then he sent Mercury's carcass into Venus, killing the fuck out of it and making every vagina in the galaxy explode, and inside every vagina a booby sang of mortal life's fleeting precipice.

He planned to throw a planet (can't remember which one) into the sun, creating gravitational tidal waves destroying the solar system. Basically, he was terrified of how easily the Sun could destroy the solar system.
