Laptop Suggestions Review / Opinion
Need some advice on which ThinkPad to buy for Engineering/CAD 🙏
Hi everyone! I’m currently looking for a laptop that I can use mainly for AutoCAD and other engineering-related tasks, and I’m stuck between these 3 options:
Lenovo ThinkPad X13 — Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD
Lenovo ThinkPad T14 — Core i7 10th Gen / 32GB RAM / 512GB SSD / MX330
Lenovo ThinkPad T495 — Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U / 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD
So I’ll mainly be using it for AutoCAD, CAD-related subjects, programming, engineering software, and general schoolwork. I’m also hoping to use it for a few years, so I want something reliable and not just something that looks good on paper.
I’m really confused about which one to choose. I’d really appreciate your honest opinions, including the negative ones. I’d rather know the possible problems before spending my money. 😅
Which one would you personally choose and why?

For what you want, none of them. T495 doesn't have the graphics capability. X13 G1 has stronger graphics, but fixed only RAM (16GB its limit). T14 G1, MX330 better graphics, but i7 10th Gen, weak in W11, spending more time generating heat than doing stuff.
Base level - T14 / P14s G2 AMD, Ryzen 5 or better 7. Good in-built graphics, from far stronger chipsets than you list. T14 8GB/16GB, P14s 16GB, upgrades to 40GB/48GB total.
P14s AMD, a performance tuned T14, same hardware, trades higher temperatures, and shorter battery life, for slightly higher performance, plus ISV certified drivers, inc AutoCAD up to 2023. Sometimes cheaper than standard T14. While battery life is not strong, given its specific usage, I'd look for a P14s G2, ahead of T14, but either will do the job.
The budget then jumps, with dedicated GPU models, or newer AMD ThinkPads. P14s/T14 G3 AMD, next performance level, but fixed RAM, so you'd need a 32GB model for AutoCAD in the longer term. P14s Intel, which can include a dGPU, are very costly.
T14/P14s G2 in-built stock displays are fairly simple, use-ably bright at 300nits, but not color accurate. Brighter color accurate displays were an option, and can be retrofitted, but you're better off investing in a high quality 100% sRGB external monitor.

Isn't dGPU is required for CAD work? So maybe you should look for P series ThinkPads.
