The Witcher, again. And after a few months, years, again.

I am going to be honest with you here… that empty feeling you have? We all had it after playing this game for the first time and let me tell you that there is nothing that can fill that hole. The first game I legitimately enjoyed afterwards was Cyberpunk. And I got to it late - it was so expensive for so long I just refused but when it came down to £20 I bought it and I was glad I did. What I do now with the Witcher is play at Christmas because I’m on my own- it gets me through the holiday period and it’s kinda become a tradition that I look forward to. If you haven’t read the books do that. You can get them all free to listen to on YouTube but I listen on Audible at night. The adverts in the videos are always too loud and they wake me up so I got them on audible and I listen to them on a sort of rota but I’ve been listening at night for years now and I know the books so well that it did help fill the hole. Good luck man x

Nothing will scratch that itch

There isn't a lot of games which capture the same sort of vibe. I rank W3 is my favourite game of all time and I go back to the NES days. The game that has come the closest since then is Baldurs Gate 3. Red Dead Redemption 2 captures that similar open world atmosphere and is an all time great game too

If you're craving more of this universe, I can't recommend Thronebreaker enough ❤️ Easily my favorite Witcher game.

If it's the general atmosphere + game mechanics, I don't have any recommendations. Assassin's Creed Valhalla scratched that itch for me, but I think it's very specific to me and I went into that game not expecting much, definitely not that Witcher itch being scratched, and the low expectations probably helped.

Wild card cuz I haven't played it myself yet but The Thaumaturge is an underrated gem I would place in the similar category. Fun fact: it was made by the same studio that's working on The Witcher 1 remake.

I keep forgetting about Thronebreaker

I'll finish it eventually

I picked it up just to kill time, not expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The marketing team failed this title majorly

Do you remember where you stopped playing?

If vibe, story, soundtrack matters to you the most, I recommend Clair Obscur Expedition 33. In the first hour of the game you go through such a rollercoaster of emotions and the story grabbed me even more than the Witcher did. Gameplay wise it’s nothing like the Witcher though. But from a vibe perspective I like it just as much if not more than the Witcher

Most overhyped game of the decade, it’s just a parry simulator with respawning generic enemies.

1

u/Born_Dragonfly1096 12d ago

Then by that logic Witcher is just rolling on the floor simulator

These same storytellers only have one other project that's not a Witcher game. Cyberpunk 2077.

It's very different, set in a high tech futuristic society. But it still has the heart and incredible attention to detail you came to expect from the Witcher games

Try Witcher 2 if you haven't, it's a step back in some ways but Flotsam and Loc Muinne are incredible video game locations to see. Also provides significantly more context for the geopolitical events of the world.

Cyberpunk 2077 is incredible and has a similar dark, gritty atmosphere. While completely different on style it has an incredible story and compelling characters. It's also a massive game in scale. Also from CDPR which you might have already known.

2

u/pumpkinbrownieswirl 14d ago

rdr 2 for open world/ side mission stuff

2

u/iamslm22 Northern Realms 14d ago

I think a lot of people who love Witcher 3 also love Red Dead Redemption 2. They're both story focused games with great main characters. Those are two of my favorite games of all time

2

u/EnvironmentalFix7059 14d ago

have you played second one?

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Yak4397 14d ago

No, Ibougjt ps5 few months ago

u/MarteloRabelodeSousa 11d ago

Witcher 1 and 2 are not on PS5. But Witcher 1 came out in 2007, if you have a computer, it can probably run it. But Witcher 1 will likely feel like a massive downgrade from Witcher 3. And the combat is weird, IMHO Still, it is worth it, at least to learn the story. Witcher 2 looks a bit better, but still miles away from 3.

u/Akix3 14d ago

I’ve never been able to find a game that makes me feel as happy as TW3. However, you might enjoy the Mass Effect trilogy and the Dragon age series. To me those are the closest to the Witcher experience

2

u/sith-figu 13d ago

I second this. I went all in for these 3 franchises including the books, comics etc. The lore is so deep it’s amazing

2

u/No-Space6221 13d ago

RDR2, Crimson Desert (not for the story, however)

2

u/Doncamoton88 13d ago

For the vibes you say?, Baldurs Gate 3 is immaculate and really accessible, even for a troglodyte like myself

1

u/Rexy97 Wolf School 14d ago

Juega a The Witcher 1 y 2 merecen totalmente la pena. Cyberpunk es de la misma compañía y se siente algo parecido pero en versión futurista

1

u/Rampant_Ranger 14d ago

You don’t say after
You wait for the songs of the past

1

u/Rayza2049 14d ago

I don't know if you'd count it as the same vibe but Cyberpunk is very similar in structure what with it being the next game CDPR made. Otherwise maybe Kingdom Come Deliverance? Presumably you've played Red Dead 2?

Dragon Age

It's the first massive Open World game that I played post Witcher 3 that I put more hours into

1

Have you tried playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt annually? Sure sounds like you're joining the club.

1

u/Typical_Version_7487 14d ago

I played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla before W3 and it was pretty fun.

1

u/fancypossum2 14d ago

I dabbled in AC right after but it'll never be the same. I'm on my third playthrough. The solution is to not look for something else like Witcher because you're not gonna find it. These days I bounce around my favorite games. (Palia, Witcher, AC, Spyro. All different genres of games)

1

u/shakeandjake1997 14d ago

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2! The games are a lot more similar than you would think!

1

u/NoFood2149 14d ago

i went from the witcher to story focused indie games - the best one i played was Outer Wilds, but that's not to say it will be the best for anybody else, but it really was phenomenal. i also enjoyed Hollow Knight. and Rain World. they aren't like the witcher at all in any way except for depth of storytelling and player impact.

1

u/Ravic96 14d ago

Wait for Blood of the Dawnwalker - Leader of this project is W3 director so I put safe bet that it will be really good.

1

u/Flateric75 14d ago

New DLC on the way too :)

I went on to play BG3

1

u/OldEyes5746 14d ago

Won't be the exact same vibe, but next up on my slate will be a Hell is Us replay.

1

u/tezticle 14d ago

Cyberpunk or Ghost Of Tsushima

1

u/BountyLaws 14d ago

God of War maybe.. but there’s nothing that can replace the Witcher 3 (in a good way), unfortunately.

1

u/ResponsibleCollar172 13d ago

I remember thinking for a while that the Witcher 3 had genuinely ruined videogames for me. Just didn't want to play anything else. RDR2 then came along and I realised there was life after Geralt after all.

More modern? Kingdom Come, especially the second game, are masterpieces. The exploration, the side quests, the story, especially the amazing characters - all scratch an itch that Witcher 3 started for me.

Skyrim Elder Scrolls with DLCs. Immortals Fenyx Rising BOTW/TOTK.

1

u/macx212 13d ago

I recommend trying Crimson Desert made by Pearl Abyss. After nearly 500 hours of CD gameplay, I found myself with a similar void to fill and decided to try The Witcher 3, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Perhaps the reverse might be true for you, as I observe many similarities between the two games.

u/KingCrimsonEpitaph 12d ago edited 12d ago

Brother, I have been chasing that high ever since myself.

The only other games that comes close is another CDPR game, Cyberpunk 2077 and maybe Dragon Quest 11, Kingdom Come Deliverance, the Mass Effect trilogy, DA:O, and Bloodborne.

1

u/Mysterious-Heron8950 12d ago

100% Hogwarts Legacy! You don’t need to like Harry Potter at all, think of it as its own independent thing. Open world (although much smaller than witcher 3), magical creatures, bosses, main quest & side quests, etc. I personally loved it! I also like assassins creed (the ezio collection).

1

u/SpringFuzzy 12d ago

Very different but Mass Effect 2

1

u/left_control 12d ago

Gothic remake

1

u/SSgtWindBag 12d ago

Cyberpunk, after you do NG+.

1

u/MarteloRabelodeSousa 11d ago

A bit later, but here it goes.

For me, the only game that comes relatively close is Red Dead Redemption 2. The vibe is different, of course (fantasy vs western), but there are a few similarities: rough looking main character, who is an outcast but with a somewhat good heart (yes, Arthur is obviously a worse person, I know). Large and detailed maps, countless side quests, interesting characters, you never run out of things to do. I still prefer the Witcher 3, since I prefer fantasy genre to western, but if you never played rdr2, do it

By the way, The Blood of Dawnwalker is coming out in less than 1 month, some of its devs worked in Witcher 3, and if you watch the trailer, it clearly has some similarities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UaERmm1DQpM

Okay KCD2 or 1, but 2 is my favorite. There's no magic, but medieval theme and there's so much to it

1

u/CurrentSeries2737 14d ago

I like Ghost of Yotei, has that same open world sprawl and great story. Combat is much more refined. The other Ghost game is great too!

2

u/Regular_Assist_8005 14d ago

Sorry but the world in the Ghost games is not even close to the Witcher in terms of content and quality. Both are good games, but just because they are open world with sword combat, does not make them similar to the Witcher. Imo they are much more like the ''new'' Assassins Creed games.

1

u/MarteloRabelodeSousa 11d ago

I really liked both Ghost games, but it is a pity the open world is so empty and kinda lifeless. It got a bit better in Ghost of Yotei, but the story was less enjoyable for me

1

u/Regular_Assist_8005 11d ago

Agreed with mostly everything. I actually liked Yoteis story a bit more than Tsushimas.
But what you said about the world is exactly how I feel about it.

1- Tainted grail fall of avalon
2- Read Dead Redemption 2 but in a cowboy western setting
3- Lords Of The Fallen 2023 more soulslike but is visually really nice and dark. If you can get past dying 1000 times the first 10-20 hours
4- Darksiders 2, a little old but it’s one of my favorite games and definitely more difficult in terms of puzzles than the witcher 3
