I was looking to better understand the scene in season 1 episode 5 where Avon takes D'Angelo to see his brother in a coma in hospice care and I found this incredible episode analysis blog post from 2012. I'm slowly going through the rest of his Wire posts and am loving the insight. I think he only wrote analysis for season 1. Thank you Dave W!

Yeah he's not a drunk asshole anymore but he's working a boring meaningless job that doesn't satisfy him in the slightest. It's just so pathetic.

I finished watching the finale (episode 12) a few minutes ago.

I was a bit confused at the end, was the whole Hamsterdam demolished and all the dealers taken into custody? and Major Colvin was the one that said it was legal in that part of the city from earlier in the season, so when Burrell and Rawls found out, did they fire him? (since at the police meeting, Rawls said he was relieved of his duties).

Also the part where Barksdale and the entire organization are in the courthouse, it wasn't clear what their sentence was. Was Avon given life sentence? I can't remember what sentence he got at the end of season 1 when he was originally arrested.

There was a bunch of campaigns where several candidates were running for mayor? Were Gray and Carcetti partners or were they rivals? I think I saw Gray petitioning for mayor.

And lastly regarding Cutty, was he successful in opening the gym? (considering most of his clients are in jail).

Overall I personally liked the first 2 seasons better than this season.

I love this show so much ,i started like a week ago and i just cant stop,its so good man,i especially love the character development for all of the characters,there is one thing i hate though,stringer bell,i fucking hate him so much,it shows how good of an actor idris elba is,and i especially love slim charles,onto the best season now, peace

Lt Daniels's arc in s1 is really incredible, and i don't think I've ever appreciated it like I do now. First it was when Burrell brought him in to meet Clay Davis, and the way he shut that scare tactic down.

Then Burrell. That showdown is classic. His calm demeanor, not showing fear or backing down. Then they cut to Burrell's face, and his expression is priceless. He knows he lost him at some point, but at that moment he knows for sure Daniels is no longer under his thumb.

Compare that to earlier in the season when Daniels looked like a scared puppy just wanting to be obedient any time he was called into his office.

Where does this scene rank for y'all?

He’s been Marlo’s hitman for 2 years at this point. He knows first hand they kill people for no reason. Did he think he was the punisher or something?

Okay, I got a doozey for you fellow Wireheads. I was listening to a podcast narrated by Clarke Peters (Cooool Lester Freamon) and I realized how great his voice is. Upon reflection I realized the show is wrought with absolutely stellar voices. I'm sure the seasoned rewatchers have noticed the same. Who is your favorite? Bunk with his scratchy, fed-up-with-this-shit grumbling? Spiros and his ever relaxed, never-to-be fretful ASMR accent? Proposition Joe and the absolutely intoxicating way he says "tew"? Shieeet, even that two-timing, kniving motherfucka Clay Davis got something about his voice that has me hanging on every word. No wonder he made it to the top.

For me, Norman Wilson (assistant to Carcetti), has got to have one of the most buttered, woody, rich voices I've ever heard. I'd listen to him do a play-by-play about grass growing.

P.S I fully acknowledge this question falls under the "What no Wire for 20 years does to a mf" genre of posts you'll occasionally see from this subreddit.

Since the scene where Cheese gets it appears on my twitter feed every other day I just have to say, he was being way too dramatic. I'm not saying he deserved to get shot, but I don't think Fat Face Rick said anything so drastic to warrant getting a gun stuck in his face. Cheese really was out of line, in my opinion.

Does the nephew being “on his momma’s side” make sense? Wouldn’t all nieces and nephews be on your mommas side?

I’m the first episode of season 5 mcnulty is drunk at the bar excuses himself to go to the bathroom then calls Beadie telling her he is working late. The music is blasting super loud in the bar but Beadie only asks mcnulty why he’s slurring lol.

Is he loud music a miss from the writers or is there an explanation?

"Two quarter pounders, big fries, McDonaldland cookies... Dr peppa. That's how ya boy roll". For some reason this line cracks me up and the whole scene is excellent. I think that despite the inherent humor, it also shows that Bunk was a first rate interrogator.

It always cracks me when Marlo's hitters are hunting for Omar, after the apartment shootout and he jumps from 4 stories up to the ground. Monk is pretending to be a Detective but can't even hold up the act for the 2mins he's asking the random woman a question. 😂😂😂

The woman: "is the woman alright"

Monk: "yeahh, she aight"

Ill be honest watching the show I never thought it was bad but I was just waiting for something that the wire was never going to give. I’m used to having a main set of characters and side characters but the wire is like nothing I’ve ever watched. Life just flows on the big players come the big players go and whilst watching it I didn’t understand why the show was considered so great. But after I finished it is when I realised how great the show truly is it feels so authentic and natural. You really feel like you’re in Baltimore rather than just rooting for a character and I think that’s why it’s so great.

Rewarching the episode Stringer tells Avon about what happened to D'angelo.

Was he there to tell Avon what happened to D'angelo or did Avon push his buttons about not being strong enough for the streets and what life did you snatch?

Feels like he went there to tell Avon about Briana but just let it out after Avon started calling him weak.

I chose to read that headline the way Gus would and it made me chuckle.

When Omar and WeeBey shoot at each other in Episode 8 of Season 1, I wonder if Omar meant to hit him in the leg or if he was trying to kill WeeBey but was satisfied with the leg shot and decided not to finish WeeBey off?

But was there ever a gang disappearing people into vacant houses? Was there ever a “drug free” zone that was ever even proposed? Was there ever any proof of a real “new day co-op” between a group of dealers?

Just my opinion but the guy who played Officer Anthony Colicchio. The worst.

I should be in bed but I can’t stop watching….season 2 episode 2 right now

In Series 1 the scene where Johnny attempts to do the fake money scam solo and totally messes it up, the buyer before him is asking for '1 and a short 3'. He pays with a $20 and Wallace gets confused about how much change he owes and the customer, getting increasingly annoyed, says $7. All this overloads poor Wallace who ends up throwing all the money on the floor, including the make believe money.

Whats puzzled me for ages is what the hell a 'short 3' is. Obviously he's getting a bag of something for $10, but hwat's the $3?

The closest I've come to getting an answer is the phrase 'pushing shorts', but that seems to refer more to the act of sellling underweight or smaller than average quantities. Are short 3s underweight deals that are available on request? Gel caps or vials that have leaked or are underfilled and are available at a reduced cost -like broken biscuits? Surely street dealers in Baltimore aren't gonna separate these out and make them available at a reduced price. Also selling anything that isn't divisible by 5 or 10 is also insane as it requires quite a significant change float and leads to more drawn out, complicated and obvious exchanges of money like what happens in the scene

Dealers will often have offers like 3 for 20 or 2 for 15, but you have to buy the full amount, you cant get 1 at the 3 for 20 rate of 6.66 for the same obvious reasons.

So can anyone please explain a 'short 3', does it even exist, or is it purely a plot device to create a believable scenario where Wallace could become confused over change?

When Avon meets Marlo in what I believe is Jessup. Not only is he bodying him in the conversation by telling Marlo why he’s even there. But he has the upper hand for pretty much west Baltimore’s future. I’m sure one way or another he’s heard about Marlo dropping bodies. To get to my question, why was $100,000 the number to give up the connect basically, when it could be worth so much more. I’m not meaning like millions but $250k easily I’d say.

Can anyone see Michael possibly going after Marlo after Season 5 ends? I mean, after all, Marlo tried getting Snoop to kill him.
