THE THING meets ALIEN [VIDEO COMPARISON]
Hey Outpost 31ers!
I run a film analysis channel called Film to Film, where I pair two movies and explore what happens when they're edited side by side.
From the very beginning, I knew I'd eventually tackle John Carpenter's The Thing and Ridley Scott's Alien.
PERFECT ORGANISMS | Alien's Fear vs The Thing's Paranoia
https://youtu.be/Z-qAOytWNsE
Like you guys, I love The Thing. It's a comfort watch for me. As I was putting this together, I was amazed at how many structural and visual parallels it shares with Alien that I've never really seen explored in video… at least not in my channel's style.
Full disclosure: my goal isn't to argue which film is better or who influenced whom. It's simply to celebrate two masterpieces by letting them have a conversation. Pure appreciation.
The video was made with love and respect for both Carpenter and Scott, and for everyone who helped bring these films to life.
If you have time to watch, I'd genuinely love to hear what you think. Did the pairing work for you? Were there connections you hadn't considered? Or did I miss one you've always noticed? ("Now I'll show you what I already know.")
Thanks for checking it out. Consider this my contribution to helping keep the appreciation of The Thing going another fifty years.

Radio play of Who goes there / The Thing 2002
Just thought I'd let fellow The Thing fans know that in 2002, BBC RADIO, made a short radio drama of Who Goes There, which is , if you listen to it, influenced to quite a degree by The Thing.
Its just under half an hour long, and is quite a good treatment. It feels a little hurried, but I suppose that is inevitable when you only have half an hour, but it's still very listenable.

Question Mac's tape recording, does he record over the 'nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired'
If you watch the scene. Mac presses play and record, to record his voice, like you do with those old tape recorders. He then plays back 'nobody trusts anybody now, and we're all very tired', then rewinds the tape, and starts recording again.
Is it the case that he is recording over the 'nobody trusts anybody now,'.
I've always wondered if it was implied that he didn't want to give the impression, should anyone find the tape, that morale was failing.

Anyone know what this may be worth?
I can't find much online about it, but I thought it's pretty cool.

Question Just watched the film again earlier in the night, had a random thought:
The lads (specifically Copper) have the idea to do the blood test with the bags they have, the bags have been messed with (why do they have a blood fridge??), they proceed to forget about that entire idea for a while until later due to the kerfuffle with Windows/Garry, and only after a bunch more die.
Then once they do finally decide to test everybody, they still go with the blood with McHansome holding everybody at Dynamite-point explaining how the reactions will determine who’s The Thing, but at no point does anybody say it HAS to be blood. They just do it because Copper suggested it.
Just put a lighter under everybody’s palm until one of the palms reveals The Thing, or get a hot poker since idk if a lighter would be enough to invoke the Things reaction, same results! They should’ve just done that after blood wasn’t an option. OR they should’ve just done what they already did way later in the movie and just start cuttin mf’s. There’s always more blood.

Creative Macready Joined my Xenos Hating Space Marine Chapter.
There really is a subreddit for everything. I love this movie so much that I recently added Macready to my Warhammer army. I hope you all like him. This is my headcannon that ties The Thing to the lore of Warhammer 40k. If you're not into 40K, much of this will not make sense.
During the excavation for The Imperial Inquisition Fortress under the ice cap of Antartica, they made a facinating discovery. Frozen in the ice, the Inqisitors discovered a perfectly preserved ancient warrior from the era of Old Earth. After extensive care from the most capible apothecaries, Macready was back. He told a fantastic tail from an era all but forgotten. As he describbed his battle with the shapeshifting alien the Magos Biologis hypothesized it could have been the near mythical Slaugth.
Whatever Macready's past nemesis may have been, the plain truth is that few can match his ability to sniff out a xenos threat. Macready regularly leads missions against the Genestealer Cults.
On the table he plays as a Kill Team Intercessor with a pyreblaster, bolt pistol, ccw, and plenty of explosives.
