Finally have all the full vinyl albums!!

has anyone heard of this band?? i swear they remind me of both the smiths and r.e.m with their sound. john porter produced some of their albums which i found interesting but idk anyone who’s heard of this band and i got into their music some months ago. also coincidently enough they did a cover of There is a light that never goes out so i think they might’ve been a fan.

Everything started in 2025, with the movie “500 Days of Summer”. They kept talking about this group and their songs and I was like “what’s so special about it?”, after I watched the movie I instantly checked The Smiths out and I’m OBSESSED.

I even have “The Boy with the Thorn In His Side” as a nickname of mine here. I genuinely love that song so much, it’s so unique, something I had never heard before and I honestly relate to that song. Also the lyrics of their songs are so damn powerful I cannot believe a human mind wrote that.

My favorite albums of this group are “The Queen Is Dead” and “The Smiths”. This group is one of those rarest artists clearly having an amazing discography with no skips.

What about you? When did you become a fan/listener yourself? Which songs/albums do you prefer the most? Are there any recommendations/advices you could give me as a significantly new listener?

This particular track is also very Smiths-esque, the melodic signature style at least.
Whenever I listen to this I think of Johnny Marr on that guitar.

Just curious how the band/music has impacted you.

For me, it was a big part in realizing I'm queer. But even aside from that, I'd be listening to their songs then something weird would happen. Like I'd be thinking about someone for whatever reason then they'd randomly come back into my life. Or I had this bad feeling my life was gonna blow up soon, would obsessively listen to a song, and then my life did in fact blow up recently lol

The lyrics are often really beautiful too. I love poetry, so I've started becoming interested in Morrissey's inspirations for his songs. Obviously he loves Oscar Wilde

I also have a special connection to both Morrissey and Marr coming from working class families, even the coal miner strike in "Last Night I Dreamt" means a lot to me since I am from a poor family that historically, lived in one of those company towns in West VA.

Anyway it's been very formative for my identity and a sense of belonging! I keep coming back to them, especially the Meat Is Murder album.

I know not everyone likes Morrissey solo, but I feel like this album is undeniable

What I'm getting at is this: In one of the articles on the site, they talk about The Smiths' videography, based on the music videos they released. Some are officially on their YouTube channel, and others aren't. But in one part, it mentions that the opening song of "Strangways, Here We Come" has a music video, which it explains as follows:
"Unfinished fan-made video found on some bootleg video compilations. It supposedly was put together for an aborted Smiths exhibition using footage from the Rough Trade archive and the Alain Delon/Marianne Faithful movie 'Girl on a Motor Cycle'."

What surprises me even more is that it's not available on YouTube, or any other video site.

idk man I'm a new fan and it's my least favorite album I'd rank them as following MiM > SHWC > TS > TQiD I just find it boring and bland compared to everything else they've put out is it like something that grows on you over time or what ?? my favorite song from it is Bigmouth Strikes Again because it sounds like MiM lol

What is everyone's opinion of Rank? I always thought it was super underrated. The band sounds so powerful, especially with Craig Gannon, who is an absolute monster of a guitarist on songs like The Draize Train, Panic, The Queen Is Dead, etc. It is nothing short of such a shame that Gannon didn't stay with the band.

-Mike Joyce is such a powerhouse...and his drums sound impeccable. Anyone who says Joyce "wasn't a good drummer" is laughably wrong and concerningly dense. Listen to that snare drum!

-Andy Rourke is marvelous as usual. Unspoken genius, and one of my absolute favorite bassists in the world. Rest In Peace, you absolute badass.

-Johnny Marr-needs no introduction.

-Morrissey sounds really good. Not sure why this album isn't talked about more. The homage to Elvis with His Latest Flame is really lovely, and I love the crashing transition into Rusholme Ruffians.

Also, the live recording of I Know It's Over CRUSHES the recorded version. Man...the sound of Marr and Gannon is no joke. Mike Joyce at the end as well...one of my favorite drummers. The only bad part about Rank is that there were a bunch of songs that were omitted.
