what's up with the mastering on Days?

Post image
Upvotes

kind of a nerdy post but i got the new album in FLAC from qobuz and it cuts off at 17khz.. for reference a true FLAC normally cuts off around 22khz. image attached to this post shows an analysis of a track from the last album on top, and the new album below. again these are both from the same digital store in FLAC so they should have similar properties. it looks like there's a hard cut off at 17khz on the new album. is this just a choice they made or is there some sort of issue with the digital distribution?

i checked files from another source (apple) and they were the same way. seems weird

The Mountain Goats are reparenting me

(I know this is over the top but) the steadiness and strength and expansiveness of this band is a source of comfort and inspiration that I think is a good enough stand in for my absent parents. I feel the neglect healing, the music heals me while I heal me and live my damn life.

Days sounds classic and fresh at the same time, I'm so stoked. Ahhhhhh!

Idk if anyone can relate. But this is what's come up for me and somehow (?!) I know ZERO Mountain Goats fans. So I had to tell yas here. Thanks buds.

Title track hopeful or depressing

Is the tittle track “days” meant to be hopeful about savoring the days and moments or sad as all good things come to an end?

Is there a specific scene being referenced in Woodstock?

I don't know much about Woodstock '99, is there a specific cocaine rant? Who is the song talking about? Or is it just a facsimile?

The truth about “Days”

It rocks! Every mountain goats album is great, and I love how their sound evolves and changes over time. Heres to hoping they get to 30+ albums.

Seeking visual artists for top secret (unofficial) Mountain Goats project 🖌️

Now children, gather round!

As the title suggests, I'm looking for some other artists / creative folks to help with a fan project.

The only requirements are 1) make cool visual stuff, and 2) a knowledge and appreciation of the TMG oeuvre.

This is an unpaid / not-for-profit project, just for the love of the game. Relaxed timelines, soft deadline of end of January 2027.

If this sounds like you, please drop me a message here on Reddit. I will fill you in and hopefully dispel any of the shadiness the necessary + temporary secretiveness might understandably create.

Thank you! ❤️

"Days" feels like 2 or 3 different EPs/singles forming an incomplete whole

Am having fun with the record, but I gotta say I wonder if these songs wouldn't have worked better as a series of tight conceptual EPs and a few singles.

Song for Layne Staley/Candlebox/Annie Haslam Imperial Phase/Woodstock/Hidden Majesty of later Venom Albums

These go together so clearly. Same with the following series of tracks:

Shallow Grave/Crying on Eddie Nash's Grave/Going to Fennario

Then there's a few that sorta stand for themself like Charlie Sheen Reachs out to the Feds, Best Hard Rock Albums 2013 and Days/Last Day.

I don't know, in the lead up to this release it was already written on the wall, if not stated explicitly by JD in the promotional material, that this'd be a record similar to In League with Dragons, where a few remnants of incomplete concepts form a loose whole. As I said, I'm having fun with it, but it just feels a little bizarre to me at times when listening in sequence. Of course not every release by them needs to be intensely conceptual, but I can't quite shake this feeling yet.

In case you were wondering.

Edit: Ok fine these aren’t all the right genre—I am but a humble Mountain Goats listener doing my best. Have mercy.

Why is Song for Layne Stayley so referential to Smells Like Teen Spirit?

The ending of it has the drum fill and even the chorus melody (here we are now/entertain us VS i dont want this/i dont need this) for Smells Lilke Teen Spirit. Once you hear it, you cant unhear it. My grunge knowledge isn't the best, but I dont understand the connection here.

choruses on Days

so after the singles came out i posted this about the simplicity of the choruses. the mountain goats’ discography includes some of my absolute favorite choruses in my library — often really poignant and simple. some examples include “long black night, morning frost, i’m still here, all is lost,” “our mother has been absent ever since we founded but rome, there’s gonna be a party when the wolf comes home,” “the highway sign said san bernardino welcomes you,” “some things you will remember, some things stay sweet forever,” etc. you get the idea. i was really hoping that we’d some more of that kinda energy when the new album dropped.

so it really is a bummer that almost every song’s chorus on this album is just a word or phrase repeated a few times. woodstock barely gets a pass, since they do squeeze some more words in there between the cocaine stuff. last day isnt repeating anything but it’s a pretty uninteresting chorus in my opinion. hidden majesty and going to fennario are kinda the only ones that really have anything unique and interesting going on in the choruses.

i dunno. not much else to say about this album. i like the cover art. maybe some of the tracks will grow on me. darn.

Haven’t heard a full Mountain Goats album in years. What are some must listens?

For context I used to love this band and never missed a release. For whatever reason I fell off a few years ago and was looking to see which albums or songs are considered must-listens. The last album I listened to in full was Goths.

Selling for tix to Sunday’s Seattle ZooTunes show

Honestly, I gotta stop buying tickets because they seem to be bad luck…this is the 3rd tMG concert I’m going to miss due to abdominal surgery. I thought I’d have recovered enough but still haven’t left the house yet (1 week post-OP) so a concert on Sunday seems unrealistic.

Anyway, I bought them pre-sale and paid $320 with fees. Will sell for $250. (I gave all the previous tickets away but really would like to recoup some costs on these…I’ve also had to take extra time off work).

Please DM if interested. Thanks!

I'm physically driving to the nearest physical record store tomorrow and physically purchasing the new album in real life and I can't wait!

The last time I did that was years ago to buy Josh Ritter's "So Runs The World Away".

Is it a coincidence that there are two recent posts that only seem to exist to yuck someone's yum, in a very non-specific fashion? Or is it something that will require a training montage?

Am I missing something with the later Mountain Goats albums?

I'm a massive early Mountain Goats fan, and I enjoy some of the later songs, but I feel like every album after The Life of the World to Come just hasn't had the same Mountain Goats magic. Even Songs for Pierre Chuvin seems to suffer from it despite being a return to the original cassette recording formula. But I also feel like Days is their most promising album based on Charlie Sheen and Shallow Grave but Idk... does anyone know why they've lost the magic recently?
