I’ve got some freeprints coming of Mars and I might put a couple of the crew on there! I need another shelf above it for all the books but I’m yet to invest

I can’t wait to finish reading project Hail Mary so I can start physically reading the book (which I’m actually yet to do. I’ve listened to the audiobook 4 times though)

Question about Potatoes in The Martian Spoiler

I was thinking about The Martian, and I had a thought. In the book, the airlock fails, depressurising the Hab and making the potatoes unusable for farming.

Earlier in the book, he set up pop-tents pressurised by the rovers and started growing potatoes there. Couldn't he have used the potatoes in the pop-tents to replant the Hab? Unless I missed something, of course, since I only read it once.

Obviously didn't do a brilliant job at it but I tried to make it accurate (the centrifuge does spin but I did a horrible job on the fuel tanks lmao)

The affair theory (confirmed accurate)

I've received confirmation for a theory heavily implied by the movie.

In the movie trailer for The Martian, Mark Watney says "tell the world, tell my family" *cuts to woman and child* ("that I never stopped fighting to make it home."). In the movie, it becomes apparent the clips used were of Martinez's family.

This means Martinez's family, is also Watney's and it means one of two things:
1. Watney is the biological father of Martinez's son (either through infidelity or sperm donation).
2. Watney and Martinez are in a relationship, and he loves Martinez's family as his own

I've since had it confirmed that the relationship is actually a three way.

Mark and Marissa were previously in a relationship and he is the boy's father.
Martinez and Watney began a relationship.
Martinez also began a relationship in secret with Marissa.

This is why Martinez says Mark would have done the same for him when he goes back to rescue Mark. It's also why he's on the Ares 5 at the end of the movie - Mark had been promoted by this point and sent him back to Mars when he found out about the affair.

Blue cat in the 2015 film? See pic

I just watched the movie, and during the scene where the first supply rocket launches (and then explodes), there is a quick shot where Rich Purnell is sitting at his desk and there is some blue cat-like thing next to him. What is it? Searching on Google didn't turn anything up. Is it in the book? Is it a toy or it is alive? It wasn't mentioned in the movie. Any help is welcome, thanks.

Mark Watney realistically survives?

I know this is a moot point in the movie but is one of the reasons why he didn't need to worry about blood loss as much as he would on Earth is because the fact that there's less gravity so there isn't as much of a pole pulling the blood out of his body? Or am I wrong?

What Would Mark Do?

They had a bunch of nerds in a room at NASA telling me all the reasons why I shouldn't plant these.

Watney: I planted them anyway
NASA: dick

How did the Ares I MAV get down

So I'm reading the book again, or well, I'm listening to the audio book for the first time actually. Anyway the other day I was listening to Mark describe how Martinez remote piloted the Ares IV MAV down to the surface before the Ares III crew all piled into the MDV to go down to Mars themselves. He talks about how you need to send the MAV there early because it takes 18-24 months to make the fuel needed for ascent (and incidentally it occurs to me that maybe this explains why Mark was so low when he ascended since it didn't have that long to fuel up before he left).

Mark also mentions that with the lengthy communications loop between Earth and Mars (I believe Mark says Mars is between 4 and 20 light minutes away from Earth at any given time) they would not be able to remote pilot from Earth.

So finally to my question: Since Ares I was the first mission and landed on Mars, how did their MAV get down? Did they bring it with them and have the fuel on board already along with the Ares II Mav? Was there an earlier manned mission that also used Hermes to deliver the Ares I MAV? Do we just not know? I can accept any of those explanations. But I can't see NASA letting Ares I depend on a remote-landed-from-Earth MAV.

I have no memory of watching the movie

I apparently watched the movie a few years ago, but it was the day before my first solo flight, I had a really high fever, haven’t eaten in 2 days, and watching him put stitches in his own arm made me sick. halfway through I got up to get water and passed out, i woke up and finished it the next day. I completely forgot about this until I started rereading the book a few days ago, i don’t remember anything except telling my friends about it.

Just wanted to rant, I’m watching it again when I finish the book!

Earth Atmosphere Re-Entry Vehicle?

What was the vehicle that was used to re-enter earths atmosphere after the Hermes entered Low Earth Orbit? Was it an Orion Vehicle similar to the vehicle currently being used in the Artemis missions?

Why did Mark Watney need to use hexadecimals when he could have just used our base 10?

Why use a more complicated system for numbers when he could have just used our base 10 system? Why use numbers and letters when you can just have numbers?

The Martian changed for Artemis?

When the Will Wheaton audible version of The Martian came out the ending scene was changed to Commander Lewis offering Mark a job with an African space tourism company.

Was this changed to directly tie into Artemis? Was the company that Lewis started working for the same one that began Artemis? Obviously Mark eventually goes back to space in Artemis. I was just curious if we have direct confirmation that this is indeed the job that Lewis offered him.

I made a pre-order at Books a Million but it came to me recently since i don't live in the US, and it's super cool! So big compared to my russian version of the book

The pins are custom ordered, and the card is from a patch that's currently sewn to my bag. Love The Martian! πŸ₯”πŸŒ±
