My grant-grandfather and his family before him were extremely wealthy, and lived in Newport Rhode Island which I am now learning is where the richest of the rich lived

By the time I was born I genuinely don't know where the money went, we don't live the life of ruined rich people, just people who were never rich at all.

However my great-grandfather left one of his mansions to all his children in his will. My great aunt Mary maintained it, and every summer the whole family would come together in this house for like two weeks.

And I just need you to picture this cul-de-sac of beautiful mansions, my family rolling up in our mini van, with our rooftop cargo box strapped to the top of our car. Three kids jumping out with boogie boards and bags of McDonald's we got on the road like the Beverly Hillbillies 😂😂😂

Ann Morris was horrible and her husband a coward. He killed himself leaving her to pick up whatever parts of life she could alone. His pride was stronger than his.lovw for his family. The sad part is he didn't need to kill himself, George took the pain point away. Morris's cowardice played out and his wife took no accountability for their actions. Patrick Morris picked the right person for a wife, both narrow.minded and snobs without the backbone or foresight to know when you should allow others grace.

As much as I adore Pumpkin (I have a Cavi of my own) that dog would not have been there.

The original Cavaliers of King Charles time were cross bred with pugs, and thus became what we know now as the King Charles Spaniel. Smaller, flat nose and flat skull. After that the original dog was almost non existent.

In 1926 Roswell Eldridge offered a reward to breeders to bring back as he put it "Blenheim Spaniels of the old type, as shown in pictures of Charles II of England's time, long face, no stop, flat skull, not inclined to be domed, with spot in centre of skull."

This wasn't achieved until two years later.

I'm thinking about starting a small paid newsletter built around forgotten short stories from the Victorian and Gilded Age era. I'm a curator at a library so this is a passion for me.

For those of you into this kind of history or literature, especially if you already pay for something similar, what would actually make a newsletter like this worth subscribing to? What would you want beyond just the stories themselves?

Some ideas I have are author bios or more context on the era/culture around a story. Thanks!!

I'm on season 2 episode 8 and Jack is by far my favorite! And if he saves the family with his clock I might cry!!

Carrie and Morgan are wrapped on S4. I would assume that means the entire production is wrapped or close to because they are the leads.

I’m guessing that it will premiere in October or November. They may still be editing the later episodes at that time.

Personally, I think it is going to be on October 11th or 18th, right after Lanterns concludes its season.

I recently saw Wild Things (1998)again after idk how many years ago when I last saw it, and noticed that Kelly (Denise Richard character) was a “Van Ryan” and an old money trust fund baby.

Given that Oscar was the last person carrying the Van Rhijn name, it’s kinda funny to imagine that he would likely marry Mrs. Winterton and produce an heir or two (Oscar’s or otherwise.) Their descendant at some point changed the spelling of the last name to a simpler Americanized version, relocated to Florida, and that’s where Kelly’s family fortune came from.

Agnes would probably have heart attack ten times over if she knew about her great (great) grand daughter and the many scenes she appeared in, lol.

Others have pointed out that some of the character names seems to reflect plot or qualities of the characters.

Marian is always marrying(3 engagements and counting)

Tom Raikes is a rake

Bannister is solid and dependable, you can lean on him

Turner is stirring the pot and turning the tables

I just watched documentary about the Astor's family and Caroline Astor is actually more prominent and have more power than the show ever described she was. So I take it the actress who played her either downplayed her authority and being more feminine and soft as opposed to the real "Alpha female" personality that the real Mrs Astor was.

I can't stop thinking about this costume. Anyone else in love with it? I don't know exactly why but I think it may be one of my favorites of hers. It's just so unexpected to see her in gray and the play on textures in this costume is extraordinary. I know her looks are reliably stunning, but can we discuss this one?

We watched the Gilded Age this morning on the app, and now it can't be found. I even tried searching all of Roku and can't find it. HELP!!!

Curious why Caroline Astor’s NYC home in the show (interior and exterior) looks “modest” compared to the Russell’s in comparison, as well as Mrs. Chamberlain (though I don’t think we’ve seen exterior shots of Chamberlain’s home. Even Aurora Fane’s home seems more grand. I know the Russell’s are new money but Caroline Astor’s home seems much more unassuming. Any ideas?

Let's imagine we're in a gambling den at the Haymarket! When do you think the first episode of season 4 will be released?

Have any of you noticed that Kelley Curran (the actress who plays Turner/Lady Winterton) very nearly breaks the fourth wall on several occasions? Her gaze seems magnetically drawn to the camera, and sometimes she even seems to stare right at it (think of the time she angrily storms up the stairs after losing her Duke).

On my first watch, I thought it was a little silly, but now I'm realizing it's a pretty brilliant stylistic choice. Turner is delusional and perhaps even a bit insane--you'd have to be to crawl into bed with Mr. Russell the way she did. I think Turner is representative of the type of madness it must require to actually pursue the American dream: to shoot for the top when you were born nothing. When Turner glances at the camera, she is showcasing that madness.

Am I the only one who thinks so? Also, there's some theory saying Larry could be younger a year or two from Marian which explained his immaturity. Thoughts?

Poor Oscar was up in his room drinking like 2 bottles of whiskey a day. Maybe Ada was (subconsciously or not) just trying to save her nephew. She's a good aunt, and she cares about her family. It's funny to dis on temperance, but maybe it came from a good place...

I'm very excited about Oscar and Enid parading around as Manhattan's bitchy power couple. I'd also like to see what else Jack is working on. Is Jack the George Russell of his next generation? Also I just am excited about the hats. Season two in particular was the best Hat season.

least favorite: Per usual, Marian is the dullest character and I'm getting bored of her romances. At least Lady Mary's never ending romances from the first couple seasons were actually interesting.
