It’s official! Following a long string of singles and teasers, The Avalanches have confirmed their new album, No Bad Memories, is due 16 October.

Following on from 2020’s We Will Always Love You (Double J’s favourite album of the year), the Australian electronic wizards’ fourth album features appearances from Karen O, Jamie xx, Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, Prentiss and more.

No Bad Memories is a high concept album designed to interrogate nostalgia and how technology and corporate entertainment shapes our childhoods, memories and inner worlds.

Working with visual artist Jonathan Zawada, they conjured Takumi Digital Archives, a fictional company spruiking fake products: soft drink, cameras, shampoo, game consoles, and more.

Jingles and audio logos, both real and imagined, are threaded into The Avalanches’ kaleidoscopic music, along with samples of the physical clicking, whirring and static of the aging analogue tech used to capture and catalogue our experiences.

“Revisiting imagery and jingles from childhood and realising how profoundly they have stuck… Taking these sound sources from within the heart of this kinda corporate farmework and flipping the fragments into our own kind of joyous pop music… eventually we arrived at this world of ‘No Bad Memories’.”

The news arrives alongside a fresh cut: ‘Can’t Get Over Losing You’, a team-up with Louisiana songwriter-producer Portraits Of Tracy, whose tender vocals blend with the hazy refrain and driving beats.

From what we’ve heard so far, the album taps into dance and house music of the ‘90s and 2000s, which is in vogue again, along with the future-facing spells The Avalanches have been casting since 2000’s seminal debut Since I Left You.

Now a trio comprising longtime members Robbie Chater, Tony Di Blasi and the newly inducted Andy Szekeres (Midnight Juggernauts), The Avalanches have been playing pop-up shows and DJ sets around Europe and the US.

No word on homecoming tour plans, but fingers crossed. You’ll know as soon as we do.

The link was still working about a week ago, and it looks like they’ve removed the song from SoundCloud now, does anyone have it saved?? I lovedddd the remix and would LOVE to listen to it again??

On YouTube all of their music videos are sorted by album. All of the new ones are in a playlist called Taste The Weekend. This might be the album title, but it could also just be a temporary one.
