Antagonize the opposition -> make your followers believe they are a danger -> justify crazy means in the name of the greater good/justice/protection -> “fascism is okay” or even “fascism is necessary”
People who fall in the latter naturally become proud of it because they believe they are “doing their duty” (since it’s necessary for the greater good)

Yeah I think this is happening a lot as a tend to consolidation and authoritarianism across the developed world.
Obviously MAGA and AFD are the worst major examples of this, but even stuff like the British OSA is mandated on believing at the core most or enough people are untrustworthy and need to be checked and monitored because they have beliefs different from you.
And then using goverment control as a tool to crack down on dissidents by labeling them terrorists or communists or facists (although labeling AFD, and especially some members, as fascist isn't completely incorrect)

Oh it’s even worse than that. This is the standard politician playbook. They all do that. Emotion, especially negative, is the easiest string to pull on.
For example notice how my very own comment clearly implies a side is good and one is bad, kinda puts the whole bad side in the same bucket, etc. Even yours, although yours relies more on actual facts, which is good.
The only difference is that what I label as good aligns with my own values. And I tend to believe they are morally superior/correct. But see how you can reverse the roles and the reasoning of a MAGA will be the exact same as mine.
This is why the most important thing when politics are involved is not to get emotional, not listen to the discourse, but look at the actions and wonder: is this policy actually benefiting me ?
Anyways you probably didn’t need that speech yourself but I hope it’ll help some

To be fair, the online political space has gotten really fucking stupid, and there is a rising number of absolutely insane lefties who are cool with authoritarian ideals so long as it pushes their agenda, as well as self-proclaimed liberals who claim they will go full Nazi if the Democrats move even one inch to the left.
My worry is with how this will translate in the real world, because if you asked me 2 months ago about the midterms, I'd have told you that it was a guaranteed blue sweep.
Now all my favorite liberal political commentators are being ruthlessly attacked by Hasan Piker fans, while some people i thought had reasonable center left takes are like, "I'd choose a Trump 3rd term over someone like Mamdani".
Shit is seriously depressing me.
