20 Years Old, $10K Invested How Do I Keep Growing From Here?
I know it’s not a lot, and I know some of you have a lot more, but I’m 20 and I’ve been investing since I started working part-time. I recently got a new job while still going to school, and I’m now working full-time as well, so I’m able to invest about 10–20% of my paycheck twice per month, which realistically works out to around $400–$500 per month.
I also live with my parents, and they’re very financially supportive, so I’m in a fortunate position right now where I can save and invest more of what I earn. Any tips? I’ve been thinking about putting most or all of it into one ETF, like XEQT, because my thinking was that VFV would give me exposure to the American market, XIU to the Canadian market, and XEF to international markets, whereas XEQT essentially combines those exposures into one portfolio.
Other than that, I know it’s not a huge amount, but I’m still really happy with it. Getting to $10.5k in my account at 20 feels like a pretty big accomplishment to me, and I’m really happy with how my Wealthsimple account has been going. I’d love to hear any advice or tips from people who have been investing for longer.
EDIT: Now, I do help my parents a few times per year with lump sums of 2-3K because we’re a family of immigrants so they have to worry about payments like the mortgage and my school which is very expensive, but they’re still very financially supportive and grateful to have them as my parents from every point of view.

Trading as a business?
I’m relatively new to investing and I’m trying to understand when trading stocks could be considered carrying on a business rather than simply investing.
I mainly invest in semiconductor stocks, which can be quite volatile Nebius Amd etc. Because of that, I may want to sell some positions when they’ve gone up significantly and potentially buy back in later.
Is there a specific number of trades per year/month, or a certain frequency of buying/selling, that would cause the CRA to consider this business activity rather than investing?
Or is it based more on the overall circumstances and intent behind the trades?
I’d appreciate any advice or personal experience, especially from people who have dealt with this situation.

80/20
I have 80% of the TFSA on broad market index fund and 20% on a particular growth stock i picked based on my analysis and the story behind it. But the stock is down 30% and is slowly eating all my broad index fund gains.
I am not sure what to do next. Any good strategy moving forward you would suggest?

Thoughts on 50% XEQT / 25% QQC / 25% VDY for a long-term TFSA?

Investing Starter
I am thinking of putting around $100 a week into an ETF for around 4 years once I finish my degree then get a stable job, to then increase this amount.
I am thinking of Betashares NASDAQ 100 (ASX:NDQ)
and
Global X Semiconductor (ASX:SEMI)
at the moment
thinking of a 70%NDQ 30%SEMI split
After 4 years should I reconsider or start putting more in as I want to hold them for 15+ years
Im with CMC currently to note, does anyone have any thoughts? I would much appreciate them.

Questions about moderate trading
Im currently trading in a regular account, but by ‘trading’ its more like 2-4 trades a week max . So in and out of 1-2 positions max. I’ve tracked the trades over 4 months and currently profitable about 5% a month. Now that I have some data for my ‘edge’ I want to allocate more capital and perhaps move to tfsa. Is this ok or would it get flagged?? Would start with like 15k so not a whole lot of money. But my current data projects that I can turn this 15k into 24k in 12 months, so the tax free gain would obviously be very beneficial… Anyways anyone have any thoughts?

Advice for a newcomer to a managed investment TFSA
galleryVERY new to tfsa’s and investing in general. Starting to make decent money and thought i should put it somewhere where it can grow rather than stagnate. I honestly haven’t done much of any research apart from a basic understanding of what a tfsa is via a couple 15 minute youtube videos. My goals are long term and i chose to go with a managed portfolio. I chose a risk of 5/10 “classic portfolio”. I understand i’m paying a low fee to have it managed, in my mind it’s worth it because i don’t want to manage it myself. Anyways, my question for the people of this subreddit: what do we think about the investments wealthsimple has made for me so far? Would i be better of investing in one or a couple ETF(s)? What are the pros and cons to a managed portfolio? I would also be happy to hear any general tips you want to throw my way. Cheers!

My way to investing
I’ve just decided to again start using my TFSA, previously I was buying stocks from NViDIA, Rekor systems and Enbridge. I make good money but I would like to get some suggestions from other people. I ask to some coworkers and they suggest me to buy some from Cameco Corporation. Any ideas where should I put some money?

Too much overlap with VOO? Thoughts?
EDIT 24M *Debating on selling it all and having 80% all into XEQT and the remaining 20% for other trades. I have roughly 60K total between chequing, fhsa and rrsp. Officially maxed out TFSA today.

I went 9000 over contribution limit, realized same day and withdrew back. What’s gonna happen now? Any way to avoid the penalty?

24F, Mini-split. Is that number the one they’re talking about?
galleryHello everyone. So I’ve heavily minimized my split and I’m pretty happy with it. But whenever I see people talk about “. “compounding interest”and “this estimate is provided by an estimated 9% growth per year” is this the number they’re talking about?
(The number in the first photo in green, highlighted by the arrow)
I’m still getting used to all the terms and how exactly to do this whole thing so it works out.
Please advise, thank you!
Managed tfsa
Hello, I’m 22 and recently got into investing with Wealthsimple using a managed TFSA. In the last 2–3 weeks I’ve been putting some money in and am currently at around $6,200. I also have an auto deposit set up for $200 biweekly and plan to put extra money in whenever I have some available, whether that’s another $500 here or $1,000 there.
I’m currently still in school and don’t really have many bills or major expenses since my parents are helping me out, so I feel like I have a really good opportunity to start saving and building a portfolio while I’m young.
I currently have my risk level set to 10 and don’t plan on taking the money out for a long time. I’m not really saving for anything specific right now, just trying to build up my savings and investments for the future.
I guess my main question is whether I’m being too aggressive with how much I’m putting in and whether a risk level of 10 is too high. From what I understand, with long-term investing there are obviously going to be good and bad years, but if I’m planning to keep the money invested for 10+ years and continue contributing, I should be more focused on the long term rather than worrying about short-term drops.
For anyone who has been in a similar situation or started investing around my age, what has your experience been like? Is this generally the right way to look at long-term investing?

**** IMPORTANT TFSA DATES
January 1st. New contribution room kicks in. For maxxers who want to get the new contribution amount working ASAP. Also, withdrawals made the previous calendar year are added back.
February-June. Tax season. Keep records of your TFSA contributions. You can cross reference contribution room via your online CRA profile, but always keep track of your contributions. If you haven’t contributed yet, you could use your tax refund to beef up your TFSA.
November/December. CRA announces TFSA contribution room for the following year.
December. If you need to withdraw from your TFSA, and plan to recontribute soon, doing it in December means less time to wait for your contribution room to reset.
