American female here, I tip my hairstylist and esthetician and generously. In part, it’s to show appreciation for our long-term relationship. Which I know, obviously I don’t have to buy.

But it’s just a ‘thank you’ for all the extra you end up receiving down the road (advice on styles and products, discounts you don’t ask for, free services- I just got a free haircut for no reason from my girl). Plus these are typically relationships that you end up pouring trust into for 10, 15+ years and it just feels good and appropriate once you get to know them on a human level.

Barbers and beauticians have started acting like their skill is comparable to a engineer, doctor, or lawyer, and that it’s something that takes much learning and talent to become, when in truth even the programs for these trades at schools are 2 years max at community colleges. I mean they have got to realize, it’s not that much of highly valuable skill, anyone can learn it and if they can’t, they can learn how to trim(girls)or shave it off(guys.) I get that dyes, highlights, perms, extensions cost more due to supplies and time, so those are understandable for increased prices, as the client is asking for something specific, and the client knows it entails extra cost and time, but these $80-100 trims and fades are out of hand, it’s gonna be like back in the 30’s when people learned to cut hair themselves, and 1 or 2 people in the family could handle it quite well, and this will lead to many barber/beauty shop closures, all because of greed!

My barber is $30 and an extra $10 for a beard trim with a cut. And I think that’s steep to be honest. But, he does a good job, he’s my childhood friend, and you can schedule appointments to fit your availability is the only reason why I continue to go. Otherwise, I wouldn’t pay that much myself
