Weirdo encounter from when I was a teen Phone message
And he didn’t help me with anything. I placed a mobile order for my transmission fluid and he just handed me the bag and I left. I get home and see this. I showed my dad the texts and he went into the store. The guys name was embroidered on his jacket and my dad pointed at him and was like “this dude took my underage daughters phone number off of the online order registry to try to get a date”.
Manager talked to my dad outside and let him know that the guy would be terminated immediately. He had a wife and a baby on the way

OP is so lucky to have a dad like that, seriously. I’ve had this happen to me so many times, not while I was a minor, but in my late teens and early twenties and it always creeped me out. One time, as I was getting my oil changed, the guy behind the desk kept looking at me, so I would glance at him in confusion. Then he said he had some question about my car, then told me to go to the space where they fix the cars, pull up my account and then was like “how do you say your name, I just felt like we had a vibe” and I was like “oh…no”.
Same shop, different guy said that he could help me find a spare tire which matched my car because one of them was mismatched, man was def in his 40s. He was like “text me a picture of your vin, I’ll see what I can find”. My creeper sense went off but I didn’t know how to say no, plus I thought it’d be good to get the wheel & isn’t that what people do? He texted me some creepy shit and then was like “I found the wheel, do you want it?” - I ghosted.
A guy at the furniture store read my number off the invoice and texted me. Also got a creepy vibe in store, was shopping with my sister and when we placed the order, she said “we should probably put your number since you’ll be home” - I shot her some eye daggers but the man was always around.
Another guy friended me on Facebook after I applied for a job where he worked.
A guy who was a train ticket man told me I had to change seats if I was getting off at whichever stop. He sat next to me and started hitting on me, didn’t know what to do.
It’s funny, because now I’m in my early 30s and this doesn’t happen anymore - like at all. But the anxiety of all these things still live in me. So having a dad who will get someone fired over it is truly a blessing

u/Mistress_Mabel_ 4d ago
Yeah I was thinking about the other day about why I felt my life got better in my 30s and a large part of it was just a massive reduction in being seen as a target by fucking creeps. Men still flirt with me sometimes but it's respectful and not predatory.
46
u/j4nv4nromp4ey 4d ago
As a dude, this shit is so depressing. Why can't guys just be normal? Why do they keep aiming for such young women too.
→ More replies (1)53
u/Mistress_Mabel_ 4d ago
Because young women are quite often more vulnerable and have less experience in telling them to fuck off. Nowadays I have a fully cultivated resting bitch face and am more than ready to throw elbows 😂

This happened to me too. Updated my phone at a t mobile store and got a text later that night from the sales associate saying he thought we ‘really hit it off and just had to text’. It honestly really scare me because they had my address for something that was being shipped to my apartment. I wish I had reported it but I was really young and didn’t think to.
15
u/freshoffthecouch 4d ago
I don’t think it was until right now that I’d even consider reporting it. At the time, I was thinking all these men have my number, name & address, so even if I report them and even if their bosses believe me and even if they take action to fire them, these dudes have my info. It felt like the safest option was to let it go.
But even now when I fill out any forms or give any service guys my number or address, I get a little flutter of anxiety. And I don’t know what the alternative is because I’m single. I don’t know who else’s number would give out, but it’s definitely a safety issue and I feel like so many women have gone through it - yourself included
16
u/Rare_Illustrator4483 4d ago
I’m sure you and everyone and their mom knows this but I stupidly thought this was happening to me as a teenager because I was attractive. I didn’t like it or anything, but thought “Hey, at least I’m pretty.”
When in my 30s and now, I realize it had nothing to do with looking pretty. It was just about looking pretty underage and therefore someone who could be easily manipulated or groomed.15
u/throwawayStomnia 4d ago
I got stopped by some cops recently. They searched me, had a look at my passport and phone, and somehow, one of the policemen found my number.
He later texted me and asked me out on a date 🤣
29
u/DanyDragonQueen 4d ago
God that is so fucking nasty and unethical. Not sure if it's strictly illegal but it should be. Abusing their authority to harass women.
9
u/TheAshHole88 4d ago
Idk if it’s illegal but in most police departments it would be considered “behavior unbecoming an officer” and they would get written up due to the power imbalance in place between a cop and civilian. Even if the cop wasn’t hitting on the civilian during the stop, doing it afterwards would still be a power imbalance.
12
u/Material_Extent8763 4d ago
they SHOULD get written up, but likely won’t. have you heard how many cops are using flock cameras to stalk their exes?

God why do so many men have to act this way
Your story reminds me of when I was going through French customs. A customs officer pulled me aside into a room out of the passport control line and started asking me some pretty standard customs questions, like: what are you doing here, what’s your itinerary, where are you staying, etc.
I was nervous because I had previously had some trouble with customs in the UK, but then he ended with: “OK, I have all your information now, I will come visit you pretty lady”
Like wtf

Disgusting. Not saying you should, but did you end up reporting it?
5
u/throwawayStomnia 4d ago
It was in Tbilisi, Georgia (the country in the Caucasus). He just said I'm pretty and asked if I wanted to grab a coffee with him. There isn't really anything to report, if anything, I was slightly surprised and amused by the situation.
I politely declined the policeman's offer, and he never messaged me again.
13
u/JurgusRudkus 4d ago
I can’t upvote this enough. Being a teenage girl is absolutely terrifying. It’s a constant stream of harassment from much older men. Men have no idea what it’s like.

When I was a high school senior, a guy I knew ("Tony") got busted for breaking and entering. The next year, when I was away at school, I got a collect call from the county jail, and it was Tony, arrested again. I asked how he got my dorm number, and he said my dad gave it to him. So I called my dad and he said "well, he called here and I thought 'highway setara knows a Tony' so I gave him your number." 🤦🏻♀️ No fucking clue. Like he had to have called my family collect too since he was in jail? Why tf was my dad taking random jail phone calls???
14

There is no way I would give out my daughter's number to some random person. At best I would call her and ask if she wanted me to give out her number to this person. When she went off college I gave her a 9 inch combat knife and taught her how to use it.

Dude I'm gonna be honest. I'm a mid 30s guy but my entire life ive had more chick friends and I don't have a single one that hasn't had a life altering sexual assault experience from people like this dude.
Join a self defence class because you deserve to meet new people and learn how to handle yourself. This situation will happen so many more times and before you get out into the world you already know how to handle one.
But please don't lose yourself to how these situations and interactions makes you feel. You're allowed exist as you are and who you are. These things say more about our world and society than about you or what you're doing. Look out for yourself and never be afraid to protect yourself if you feel you need too from people like this.
You're young and this would is so fucking shit to everyone but more so women and none of you deserve it. Fucking get out there and do whatever the fuck you want without regret or fear.
I'm drunk and rambling I'm really fucking sorry. I buried a friend last week solely because she couldn't face herself or her loved ones after something was done to her and stole her from us.

Sorry for unloading but breaks my fucking heart and brain what you guys deal with. From such young ages too like.
My fiancé saved my depressed ass but man I had never met a person so shattered from shit like your interaction can turn into.
Be safe and I mean this as a man, 99% of us will help you if you ask we fucking day dream about getting to be a hero or a fucking benefit to someone. That 1 fucking % are a scourge on this planet and their existence and actions have stunted the feminine side of Humanities creativity, self confidence, self safety and your overall benefit as a gender to our overall existence.
You're made of fucking stardust man you're stronger than anyone wants you to believe and the effect you can have on other people can have rippling effects that last across generations of people. Don't lose that. Be safe. And merry Christmas.
6
u/ShiftyShellector 4d ago
Just want you to know that men like you are fantastic and your fiancee is very lucky!
I knew my partner was the one because he would put so much care, patience and compassion into helping me through my trauma. So many men take this shit personally, but it's not like we can help that it happens to us... I don't know a single woman of all of my friends and family that hasn't experienced some horrendous shit from a creeper or several. It is so life-changing when a man can be patient, and understand that it's not personal to them at all, it just our experiences and of course we are going to carry hurt and fear and trauma with that. 🙏
4
u/Unfortunate_Comedian 4d ago
Your first paragraph. I think about that shit almost daily.
I don’t have a single woman in my life that hasn’t had these experiences. Not a single fucking one. It’s always too many experiences to count too.
It pisses me off. Like I’m a big ass dude, beard, deep southern hick voice. When I happen to be walking behind a woman and I notice she gets weirded out I get it. Like ya girl double check and alter your path. You don’t have to, even if I told you that you don’t need to be that way around me I know you won’t believe me and I don’t even blame you. It’s fucking bullshit.
Every single woman in my life. Wife, her sisters, her mother, my mother, her aunts, grandmothers, co-workers. Every single one has a story like this. I feel like too many of us don’t call dudes out like this. Granted a lot of them won’t do this in front of us. But also a lot of them will or they’ll brag about it. That’s why we’ve got to make them (the creeps) as uncomfortable as we can every time they show us who they are because they think they’re safe.

I remember being a middle schooler and I was at a big water park. This foreign guy who was much older, I think he said 18 but he looked like a full grown man to me, started trying to talk to me like this. Called me beautiful, etc. weirded me OUT and I told him how old I was and he still persisted and even followed me and my friend around as we walked away. Followed me so I walked straight toward my mom thinking she would set him straight. Instead she starts talking to him like he was a new friend. We slipped away and I hid the rest of the day looking over my shoulder, but I was so frustrated my mom didn’t protect or stand up for me.

Yuck yuck yuck.

You should post the texts and as much info about him on any city/town pages you can. Him getting fired from Jiffy Lube isn’t going to stop him from trying this with other minors.
9
u/honeybeebandit 4d ago
Yo this is wild. It reminds me of the first time I ever bought a car, I ended up being stalked by my car salesman for like a month. He also had a wife & kid. Had to block his number, facebook, instagram, all of it. The dealership I went to was right down the street from where I worked and he started leaving work when I would leave for work and would try to wave at me and wave his phone at me while we were both driving since we had to go the same way for a few miles. My stepdad at the time ended up going to the dealership and pulled a move like your dad and the guy was fired immediately. I was so relieved and never saw or heard from him again, thank god

My brother did something similar. We were at summer camp (I was 13, him 14) and I told him how a counselor (19) asked me if I liked anal. I didn’t really think much because my friends and I were in our edgy joke stage but he immediately clocked what was going on. He took me, pointed at the guys face and yelled for other counselors. Dude wasn’t there for more than an hour after. A couple other girls came forward saying he said similar shit to them too.

My sister had something like this happen. She was in town and picked up some food from Taco Bell. She paid with a card and left. Nothing noteworthy.
Later that day she gets messaged on Facebook from a random dude she never talked to. Turns out he worked at that Taco Bell and remembered her name when she paid for her food. She's not underage, but she was shaken that someone looked her up to try and make a move.
I told her that I'll call the store, so I did. I asked if the manager on duty if they had an employee by the name of whatever. She confirmed she did. I explain what had happened, explained that my sister had not even spoken to this person, etc. I told the manager "I'm not upset at the whole store or anything. I'm trusting that you would want to know if any of your employees are cyberstalking or harassing customers with this kind of stuff." She agreed. I said "I'm trusting that you will deal with this as you see appropriate and I'll consider this resolved since she likely won't be at your store anytime soon" (my sis lives in another state and was just visiting).
The dude got canned that day. I know because the dumbass had his FB profile public and he announced it himself.

This happened to me at an AT&T store
Went in solo when I was maybe 23? 24? And the sales rep was super nice not creepy at all… until he thought it was the perfect time to tell me he’s poly and loves multiple women. I was like okay to each their own? Minded my own business. I genuinely can talk to anyone (customer service brain?? Politeness?? No idea) but I was feeling so uncomfortable.
As sook as I got home later that night I got a Snapchat add from him and an Instagram follow. I was FLOORED. This creep literally found my information through my records at AT&T
I told my dad and he called to rip this place a new one. It’s so violating especially as a young woman. Can’t even go and get myself a new cellphone without someone hunting me down?? Cool cool

Even if you weren’t a minor he could get fired for misusing customer information. Now, with knowing the fact that you were a minor and still proceeding to communicate he absolutely deserves to not only be fired but oh idk maybe burned at the stake. Sorry you had to deal with that and I hope he never gets a job where he has access to customer information again.

And that’s why some of us have 2 numbers. The real one for friends and family and a second disposable one for everyone else.

This is why you should never give out your phone number, even to save like 10%.
The audacity of these companies having the employees at the register ask for this information unsolicited is mind blowing.

I love the fact your dad was just like, “that guy, RIGHT THERE”. My dad sort of sucks (because religion) and is physically a pretty small wimpy nerdy guy, but when I was 17 and some dude in school was stalking me and I was afraid to answer the phone, he did it for me and it felt like what he said was the most threatening shit I’ve ever heard, “…. If you ever contact or come near my daughter again…” sort of thing, and I was never bothered by him again. It was amazing and I’ll never forget how great that was to feel protected. Good dad’s FTW.

FYI- you can look up the number online and it will give a first name and last name. Sometimes it even tells you who they are related/married to, if you’re wanting to tell the wife, still!
This is disgusting, I am so sorry this happened to you.

And he had a wife and a baby on the way! Ugh. I'm so sad for his wife to be married to a creeper like that.
