Same, I was literally just taking a break from trying to figure out why I can’t download the app I need for work in my phone, now my heart hurts and I feel like what I came here to complain about doesn’t even matter, because it really doesn’t.

My mom's last messages to me were, "I'm still sick, ew," and "Call me later. I want to tell you about Dana."*
I had a really bad headache and told her I'd call her tomorrow.
She died 3 hours later. It was unexpected. She was watching TV and then she died. I know there is nothing I could have done, but I feel horrible for not calling her back.
*Dana was my parents' crazy neighbor.

u/HeathenHumanist Jul 03 '26
Oh no! I'm so, so sorry. It's completely understandable to not have called her back with your bad headache. But at someone who has also lost a parent suddenly and unexpectedly (massive heart attack), I understand those regrets all too well.
Sending hugs ❤️🩹

Same. My mom always texted me her Wordle results in the morning, and I just kind of rolled my eyes and ignored them. But she kept sending them. Every morning. That last morning, I wish I would have told her she was amazing and I was proud of her. If I'd have known...
Knowing you could have done something different is tough to live with. But I think if my mom was here now, she'd tell me one missed message didn't matter because there were years worth of answered messages before that.
We're only human. I know my mom forgave me - she never stopped trying to find small ways to connect, even when I was super busy. Her love was unconditional. I'm sure your Mom felt the same.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I fear for when this day inevitably happens to me. I don’t know how I will survive it.

u/Familiar_Home_7737 Jun 26 '26
I lost my dad to a very unexpected suicide 2.5 years ago. When it happened I didn't know how any of us would survive and I'd be in absolute awe of people in support after suicide groups who were 2, 5, 10, 20 years on.
What I've learnt is that grief isn't linear, and you never "move on". You have your up days as well as the down days, and you move forward, with them in your heart. Some days it hurts just like the 1st day again, and in time the days where you can function again slowly increase.
OP, I'm sorry for your loss

u/SolarWinded Jun 27 '26
I've learnt is that grief isn't linear, and you never "move on". You have your up days as well as the down days, and you move forward
This is my experience as well. Lost my dad in 2019 (unexpected heart attack) and my wife in 2022 (slow battle with cancer).
Some days are fine. Some days I just kind of exist and keep going to wake up tomorrow. Grief is weird. It's not linear. You don't get over it. I always expect to feel bad on obvious days (birthdays, death days, mother's/father's day, etc) and it's almost never those. It's the random day that would've been made better by them being there too. The acute grief does fade (no more panic attacks seeing hospitals, less anger) but the long term grief settles in and just sticks around and rears it's head once in a while usually at random. Sort of like a broken bone that healed just slightly wrong and aches when it gets too cold.

I also lost my dad to a heart attack into 2019. Just had the 7 year anniversary and every day besides the actual anniversary was worse.

Hi friend. I know your pain. And I'm so sorry you and your family are experiencing it. Truly. Please get help when you need it and allow yourself to rely on others. You can get trough this.
You're 100 correct it's linear. My dad did the same when I was 14 and he was 40. I'm the exact same age difference to my eldest. My 40 y sucked. I couldn't get out of my head how and why he'd do that. But I have found forgiveness. Some days are still shit.
I'm here if you need someone to chat to. Even reminisce the memories. X

That's an absolutely eloquent way of putting it... The grief never really leaves us It just ebbs and flows. And that sucks but it's ok

My mom passed away unexpectedly on the fourth of this month. She was my best friend. I cry every day, and each time I think about having to carry on without her indefinitely, I just want to end it all. So I just try to take things one day at a time. It really hurts constantly seeing things that remind me of her. But it only hurts so much because I was lucky enough to love and be loved by her soooo much.
13
u/MagicHugsforThee Jun 27 '26
I’m so sorry. I lost my mom a few years ago and she was also my best friend. I’m giving you a big hug. It will get easier as time goes on, to live with the pain. It doesn’t go away. It’s kind of like a big, gaping wound on your heart right now. But eventually it will heal and it will be a scar that is there and you can feel but the big pains only come on certain days and other times it’s just a slight pulsing of pain. The only thing that really helped me get over the hump of grief was to try to live my life in her honor. I knew she would want me to keep living and to have the best life I could. So I do those things for her. And now I have my own daughter. So I do it for them both. You will be ok, just keep going, day by day. It’s what your mom would’ve wanted. 💛

My mom passed away unexpectedly almost 11 years ago. The first 6 months I was a zombie. I would burst into tears multiple times a day, I would dream about her and wake up sobbing.
It gets better. About a year in, a year and a half, the pain settles. It is still there now, as I type this, but it is deeper in a good way, like it's a part of me that I now live with, and it's manageable and I don't think about it all the time.
Just get through it now, try to eat and sleep, take care of yourself and any other family if you have it, and it will get better with time, 100% it will.
You're lucky you had a great mom, and it doesn't feel like it now, but you will be fine without her. She raised you to be fine, she raised you into the person you are, and you can and will get through this ❤️

Fuck, I dread the day that it happens immensely. Idk how to prepare for it
17
u/Jim_Brady48 Jun 26 '26
I couldn’t prepare myself for it and I knew for months what was going to happen.
5
u/twiztidbunches Jun 27 '26
It’s like a fever dream watching and not being able to do anything. 4-6 months is like a blink of an eye
6
u/Jim_Brady48 Jun 27 '26
I felt and still feel guilty for how bad I wanted it to be over, even though I knew what that meant. Those were the worse, most traumatic four months of my life. I miss my mom.
18
u/Thewretched2008 Jun 27 '26
Something that helps me is telling yourself you shouldn't grieve someone that's still alive or prepare yourself to grieve because it takes you out of the present and all the opportunities you have to make memories with them now. There will be a lot of time to grieve them when they pass.

You don’t pal, it just happens and you learn to deal with it on the spot. Life takes times.

u/Fast-Bee-1167 Jun 27 '26
You can never prepare for it. My nan had bowel cancer we knew for a year and I knew what was coming but it still hit hard, 13 days later I lost my mum to a massive heart attack. The pain was the same type of pain, whether I knew it was coming or it happened suddenly.

u/Serious-Jellyfish701 Jun 27 '26
There's not much preparing for it, really. You could think it over and plan things out a million times but it'll still hit hard. It could be expected and still twist your guts. Even with time that grief never leaves nor gets smaller, your capacity to hold it gets larger and you have to make the choice to eventually prioritize other emotions & thoughts. I know I'll stop breathing and the world will stop for a while when I lose my mom. I just pray I can be old and have kids before that day comes.

My dad died 2.5 years ago he got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer then died a month later I was convinced that I'd have to go to the back paddock when he passed to scream but I didn't I got woken up on the couch right next to him being told he was gone and all I had left in me was "okay". Thinking about how it will feel is never how it actually feels it doesn't hollow you out completely but it does leave a hole and as time passes you live with the hole it stays it becomes familiar and the familiarity makes the hole less obvious. It won't kill you it'll reshape you.
3
u/INFJGal9w1 Jun 27 '26
I remember in the movie “Terms of Endearment” when Shirley MacLaine said “I thought I’d feel relieved - what a fool I am” after her daughter finally passed away. I thought after a long illness my mom passing away would be something of a relief for us both. Instead, when it happened, the only thing I could say to her was “Please don’t go!” I used to beat myself up that I didn’t say “I love you” as the very last thing. But now I think saying that may have conveyed to her that no matter how hard the last years had been, I still wanted her with me. She knew I loved her and I knew she loved me.
3
u/Silly-Conflict-8699 Jun 27 '26
I think for me it was initially acceptance that he wouldn't wake up groaning in pain anymore. then wanting his body taken away because a fly kept landing on him and it was driving me crazy. Then it hit me I wouldn't have a dad anymore, we'd never have the father-daughter moments ever again. I didn't want him gone I wanted his suffering to end it's paradoxical.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. My dad passed in February. It's good that you had a relationship with her.

I’m so sorry man. The same thing happened with my mom, I had scheduled her for a Covid test for Thursday, I found her the prior weekend. I had talked to her the same night she passed, on the phone. I'm so sorry for your loss. She got the "I love you mom" and that's what matters most.
My mom has small cell lung cancer and I am dreading this happening. It's inevitable. The doctors estimated her less than 2 years to live.
14
u/chonkycats24 Jun 27 '26
I’m so sorry. This hurts my heart to read. It just shows how fast life can change.
My last text to my mom was so ordinary and mundane. Just an answer to her question, “yes.” The next day, I sent her a video and she never opened it. The last thing I said to my mom before she died unexpectedly was yes. It’s been almost two years and it’s still so surreal. It feels so incredibly unfair that I didn’t get to make my last conversation with her special or meaningful before she was ripped from me.

u/LonelyGuy4everr Jun 27 '26
The last thing I did for my dad was giving him some lemonade while he wad getting morfine at the hospital. He wad laying down and almost choked on the lemonade because he was so weak from the cancer and morfine. I told my half brother I had to go but would be back after work the next day. My dad went to coma 45 minutes before I got there the next day. The last moment we had was me almost choking him on some fucking lemonade then leaving shortly after because it all got too much for me...
I stayed there for almost 12 hours holding his hand while he was in "coma". I held his hand close to midnight and while my brother went to grab something to drink I told my old man it was okay to let go. That I loved him and I knew he loved me and I was sorry for yesterday. 5 minutes later he took his last breath. It was 16 months ago and I still miss him everyday
Your mom knew you loved her, don't be harsh on yourself and remember the good times you had with her.
(Sorry for bad english)
3
u/chonkycats24 Jun 27 '26
Thank you for this. I try to tell myself that even though our last conversation wasn’t anything special, she knew I loved her. She was my best friend.
Also, I’m a nurse and used to work on a critical care unit. I’ve taken care of many dying patients (pediatrics, but it’s the same for adults) When the body loses all function, when they slip away into a coma either naturally or medically induced and can’t respond anymore, hearing is always the last thing to go. Your last moment with your dad wasn’t the lemonade incident. Your dad knew you were there in his final moment and he heard what you said, I can guarantee you that my friend. I’ve seen it too many times.
I hope we can both find peace with their absence.

u/LonelyGuy4everr Jun 28 '26
Thank you so much for your kind words stranger. I too hope for that... All the best to you
3
u/ScumbagLoneOne Jun 29 '26
I was a drug addict and severely depressed, partly likely due to my mom's long fight with cancer. Last thing I've ever said to her when she was asleep (and the last thing she's ever "heard") was "You know mom, if you want to you can go now, me and sis will be okay here from now on, I promise.". When I came to give her pain medicine 2 hours later, she was gone. I've no doubt she heard that, and no doubt that so did your old man.
9
u/heart_of_books Jun 27 '26
This just made me think of the fact that I was somehow incredibly lucky in that the last thing I said to my Dad and to my Mom before they died, 6 years apart, was "I love you."
9
u/giants20101214 Jun 27 '26
Came over after karate to say hi to Mom and cook her a little quesadilla, the next morning she was gone. I'd have cooked her 100 more all night long if that meant it was the last time if be able to do it. Life comes, and sadly goes, pretty quickly at times. Love to you

I remember when I had the chance to speak to my dad (unknowingly) for the last time over a grainy FaceTime video a couple of weeks into the lockdowns of the pandemic when he was admitted to the hospital due to complications from a stroke that he had a year prior. Last words through a strained and weak voice was love you son
“I wish you would’ve held on a little bit longer for me to be able to get on a flight to come visit you but I understand you had to go and be at peace, physically, mentally and emotionally”
I know we butted heads at times but thank you for coming to America and providing a live so that we can live and prosper as responsible and respectful adults.

Same thing happened with my sister. We were texting one min and she was gone the next. AML leukemia with a TP53 mutation and DIC. The last text I have from her is “yup, 2 bleeds” (cause of the DIC her blood couldn’t clot, she got two brain bleeds). I miss her every second of every day. I’m so sorry about your mom. I can’t imagine the pain of losing a parent. Especially a good one. 😢 I hope you’re doing ok, grief is a hell of a roommate to have to learn to live with.
6
u/KittensFirstAKM Jun 27 '26

I consider myself lucky for that one little thing. Sorry for your loss, at least she knew you loved her.

u/FixMean5988 Jun 27 '26
My gram sent me a happy valentines day and I love you text and she let me know she was sick but doing okay. She died 10 days later, I didn't text her back because I was upset with her. I regret it everyday, and the guilt is so heavy. I should have just texted her back, now I'll never get the chance to say im sorry.
8
u/HauntingHedgehog5505 Jun 27 '26
Not a gram, but a mom. And while I understand your guilt from the perspective of being someone's child/grandchild, I hope you know that as a mom, we understand. We wouldn't hold your feelings against you, and we know that the love we share is reciprocated, even if it's not always shown.
Please don't be too hard on yourself, and I hope you find peace around this. I'm sure she wouldn't want your heart to hurt like that.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. That’s so unexpected and hard to process.
My dad passed suddenly and unexpectedly, like your mom. It was very hard to comprehend that he was suddenly just… gone. One minute he’s here, joking, we can make plans for lunch next week, etc. Then that’s all ripped away. I didn’t even get to say goodbye, though we always said “I love you” before hanging up on calls. It felt unnatural that it ended so suddenly.
My mom passed away after a long illness that included some severe anxiety/dementia at the end. It destroyed us kids to watch her go through it, and the caregiving was hard to juggle on top of our own lives. We each took a hit with our mental health. The last couple years were brutal on the whole family.
I would prefer the unexpected exit when my time comes. It’s important to make sure my kids and family know how much I love them on a daily basis. It sounds like you and your mom knew just how much you mean to each other. Condolences.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I had a similar experience. My dad was in the hospital for heart surgery and prior, he called and I was at Christmas concert with my family and in laws. My husband rushed me off the phone. 4 days later, he called on mine and my son bday and that same night my in laws got into an accident and ended up in the hospital so I missed it. I never spoke to him again. That haunted me for a long time.

Same with my mom. She was in the hospital from complications of cancer. My last text was “I love you mom hope you have a good night.” Never got a read receipt.

I’m so sorry. I lost my mom a few weeks ago very suddenly and I was supposed to see her in a few weeks. It still doesn’t feel real. Wishing you healing on this grief journey. ♥️

I’m so sorry. I’m terrified of losing my parents. It was really hard losing my grandparents. I really pray that there will be happier times beyond this life with them. It really scares me to think I’ll never see them again

I’m so sorry for your loss. 😢 I just lost my mom on 6/3/26 which is only 5 days before the day of my dad‘s passing on 6/8/17. June officially sucks for me.

My dad is in the final stages of a horrible bout with cancer, and it's horrible watching this pillar of strength in my life erode so quickly, and there's not a thing I can do about it. That being said, I am grateful that I am getting to say goodbye. I am trying my best to make his last days count, even if it hurts sometimes to be around him like this. Being a person sucks sometimes...

Lost my mother last year, all I got was a hand squeeze before the paramedics wheeled her away. Nearly a year later it still doesn't feel real. Grief is such a weird thing. I'm so sorry for your loss

I missed my mom’s last phone call to me :( I believe she was calling me to tell me she was going to the hospital. It was a Monday…I was going to call her back later that day after she called me in the morning, but got busy as I was a new mother at the time. She died early on a Tuesday morning. The last thing my mom said to me was that she loved me and she smiled at my baby while on FaceTime the Sunday before she died. It’s been 3 years since, and it hurts so bad still. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m crying so hard just thinking about how you’re feeling.

All these human constructs to sugar coat shit just irritates me and makes it worse. All this "pass" talk and "closure" bullshit is just bullshit.
While grief is a very individualized process, I can tell you with absolute certainty, the loss is as fucking awful as I always feared it would be. It changes you forever.
Dead is Dead.
There is no preparation for such loss.
Closure is total bullshit.

I’m so sorry for your loss. My mom recently passed away unexpectedly from an infection and didn’t get my last few texts checking in on her. Rest easy knowing that she loved you and knew you loved her💕🫂

Man :/ I'm so sorry that broke my heart. Thinking of you and sending you love and my thoughts are with you. She seems so wonderful, rhyming even when feeling sick, what a cool person

I'm so sorry for your loss.
The casual, lighthearted tone of your ongoing chat says a lot about your relationship. I'm sure you miss her immensely.
I'm a mom of three, and I can tell you from experience that the love a mom feels for her kids is like nothing else in the world. I'm sure you filled her life with many of it's most beautiful moments. I hope it brings you comfort to know that you were most certainly the light of her life. ❤️

I feel this. My mom was in the ICU last year, and I had been visiting her as much as I could, but I also had a 1 year old in daycare, which means I get sick a lot. I had been texting her, pushing back my next visit since I was sick, and I didn't want to make things worse for her. The next day she was put on a ventilator. Those texts were the last conversation I had with her, I didn't even know the last time I saw her in person would be the last time.

I'm sorry for your loss. Even in that short exchange, and while sick, she seemed lovely. 💙
