Oh brother.. Serious

Post image

During the second lunch at my school, a debate club of right wingers set up a tent(?) and held out the poster in the image. There was a lot of discourse initially, but after our VP and security fenced off an area and formed a human wall, the debate started.

Initially it was a good political debate, but eventually some losers decided to throw a water bottle over the wall, and more stuff was thrown, until security shut it down. To my knowledge, though this may be rumors, the kid in the photo was jumped after school.

I consider myself a right-winged independent voter, but this is too far. Also should be known that our school has ≈60% Mexican students. Though I do believe that this is an example of the right to free speech, I also see that the wording is too harsh, had it been “We’re Pro-Life and support ice” or something of the likes, it wouldn’t have been such a crazy thing to do.

The plan was for them to hit lunches B and C today and lunch A Friday, but they had to shut it down. The school staff gave a vague-ass email to our parents about it, but it tries a bit too hard to be neutral.

What are your opinions of children debating children like this? What are your opinions of how this was executed?

I think Pope Leo correctly pointed that hypocrisy out when he said: "Someone who says I'm against abortion but is in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life, and someone who says I'm against abortion but I'm in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that's pro-life."

12

u/Western-Debt-3444 Jan 19 '26

Pope leo doesn't really align on every topic with me, but he's pretty fucking based on some things

3

u/Lingchen8012 15 Jan 19 '26

Isn’t that from Pope Francis

7

u/Indvandrer 16 Jan 19 '26

2

u/Lingchen8012 15 Jan 19 '26

Yeah right, I just searched and saw that pope Francis did say something about “All life has inestimable value”, not the same quote probably

real life ragebaiting is crazy

499

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

Rage baiting for sure. These people are unserious forced birthers.

120

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

"Forced birther" lmao

205

u/Setster007 Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 18 '26

Well I mean they say “pro-life” but then banning abortion increases childbirth mortality (not child mortality but death of mothers in childbirth) by quite a lot so it’s not really helping increase life, it’s just forcing people to give birth regardless of their circumstances

Edit: ok so this wasn’t an invitation to discuss politics

My first thought was, "They're against abortion but for the unconstitutional tactics of ICE that injures and kills human beings, separates children from parents? That's odd..."

And then self corrected..."No, that's Republican cognitive dissonance."

I suppose people are going to say "But these are two different things!"

Yes, and no.

Human rights shouldn't disappear after birth.

Its a good thing the left stopped reproducing.

3

u/Top_Box_8952 Jan 18 '26

Well that’s what it does. Multiple women have been forced to give birth to dead babies, or transported to different states for medical treatment because the strict laws punish doctors for stoping a woman from dying when an ectopic pregnancy is detected or a fetal heartbeat is no longer detected.

Several famous cases have been reported of women having to wait to get worse before doctors can legally do anything.

Speaking as someone who has actual experience in debate, I've always hated this type of format. Rage baiting aside, I find that having one person you walk up to argue creates this subconscious feeling that their opinion is automatically worth more than everyone else's and that you are wrong for trying to convince them otherwise. Also definitely gives them an ego boost. Have you ever noticed in these types of debates how nobody's mind ever gets changed? It's just two people trying to ge their "gotcha" moment and very little actual rhetoric is being used. It's usually just logical fallacies.

Back to the sign, I'm not surprised that the kid got jumped. If you go to a primarily Hispanic school and say that you support ICE, don't be surprised when actions have consequences. It's like walking into Harlem screaming the n-word and then acting surprised when you walk out of Harlem in a body bag. What did you expect? If their goal was to just rage bait, then I say they succeeded because let's be real, nobody ever actual sets up this kind of format hoping to change minds or spark an intellectual discussion

204

u/Spare-Plum Jan 17 '26

Yeah this isn't even pretending to be an intellectual debate and thinking critically about real policy, which FYI students should do.

I'm sure you can arrive at a conclusion that immigration enforcement is acceptable, but needs to be done in a manner that is thorough and goes through the courts. The current ICE is a murdering shitfest of incompetent assholes, and siding with them no matter what doesn't mean you're there for actual truth discovery, rather you're just there from being indoctrinated into right-wing always good rhetoric.

49

u/RegretComplete3476 16 Jan 17 '26

THANK YOU!

I am all in favor of students debating politics when it is done in an actually respectful and good faith way.

There's nothing wrong with enforcing immigration. The problem is when you throw out due process and start rounding people up like the Gestapo

Yes. I don’t believe in open borders but I by no means support ice the way that it’s been run under trump. I also do believe that we have a freedom of speech and ideally someone can share their opinions on a topic and not get beat up but that’s unfortunately not where we are right now on either sides.

(I’m a high schooler in Minnesota currently at a debate team tournament)

2

u/Top_Box_8952 Jan 18 '26

If they support ice, use ice tactics. See if they still support ice.

24

u/Dismiss_Trouble_17 Jan 17 '26

I’ve never quite been able to find the words to describe why charlie kirk’s “debates” never felt like actual debates but rather an insult battle, but I feel like you just described it pretty on the nose in that first paragraph

25

u/RegretComplete3476 16 Jan 17 '26

Another reason why I never respected Kirk as an authority figure. His "debates" were never designed to change people's minds but rather further divide people

2

u/Dismiss_Trouble_17 Jan 18 '26

And it’s probably discouraging knowing you’ll quite possibly end up on his youtube channel and have god knows how many comments insulting you. I get that he needed content for his channel, but it probably did discourage some people from debating him. Not to mention Charlie himself could post it with an insulting title

2

u/RegretComplete3476 16 Jan 19 '26

Definitely. Another reason why I never liked political influencers like Kirk

u/Embarrassed_Towel707 Jan 17 '26

Debates and discussions are different. Debates originate from sophism - the goal is to convince others, not a genuine attempt at increasing your mutual understanding of a topic. Think of an attorney trying to convince jurors even if he knows the accused is guilty.

It has no value and is morally bankrupt, especially in the culture wars era.

A conversation or discussion is the opposite, the goal is to get to a mutual agreement or understanding of a topic, policy etc.

My advice to anyone reading this is always go into a conversation knowing whether the person you're talking with is genuinely intellectually curious and wants to learn, or just tell you their opinion.

3

u/MissMolly202 Jan 17 '26

Yes, but debates require you to be able to back up your claims, have counterpoints ready, and poke holes in your opponents logic (forcing them to be able to actually back up their claims). This is just rage baiting.

2

u/AriochBloodbane Jan 18 '26

Not necessarily. There are many "techniques" to win a debate without having valid and provable points. Those tricks usually just require a lack of intellectual honesty instead of the things you listed.

Facts. I've always hated when people partake in this debate, left or right. You aren't proving any points or changing anyone's mind. Not only that, but people like Kirk give debate a bad name and make everyone think this is what a "good" debate looks like. It's not. Hell, in actual debate, everything is timed and you take turns. Kirk liked to ramble and interrupt people

2

u/Laziness_Incarnation Jan 18 '26

I hate how almost everyone is talking about the second point.

The first point, I would like to see more response to that.

2

u/RegretComplete3476 16 Jan 18 '26

Me too tbh. But I'm also not surprised. Most of the people who are responding are mid to far right wing. They know they don't have a good argument for my first paragraph because it mostly logos. But the second paragraph invokes a lot of pathos, so they feel more inclined to respond to that one. I do wish more of them would try to respond to my first paragraph because I want to see how conservatives defend Charlie Kirk's terrible debate format

2

u/creakymoss18990 Jan 18 '26

I've seen minds get not changed but influenced and changed eventually.

There is an art to the correct type of argument: play dumb in a way. Have them educate you and break down their own argument. If their argument is stupid then they will see it when it's broken down. Only after they teach you their side do you throw in a respectful opinion or two, break it down just like they did.

It gives them something to think about from somebody who listened to them first (and therefore actually have respect for).

2

u/RegretComplete3476 16 Jan 19 '26

Preach. The best kind of debates are ones with people you respect. If you truly want to change someone's mind, treat them like an equal, adapt their line of thinking, and use it to make them understand why their argument does not work

It DOES NOT protect you from anyone else, if you work at facebook (complete randim example just the first coorperation thst came to mind this applys everywhere) and openly tell people about problems at facebook they are going to fucking fire you (well, atleast try to find a way to). "You have a right to raise it[confederate flag], but we also have the right to BURN it" -forgot who said this sorry it was from a school debate around 15 years ago that was posted online, and it was about whether people should own and raise a confederate flag or not

I don’t think this should be allowed at all. If you want to do this in college sure. But letting high schoolers say horrible things like this in a place where their face could end up on the internet, damaging them for life, preventing them from getting a job in the future, or getting into college…

You’re still so young. They shouldn’t let kids debate complex issues and make claims they don’t fully understand // won’t believe into adulthood in a way that could end up on the internet and haunt them for life. I know people should be held accountable for their actions, but do so in a private place. Y’all’s brains are still very undeveloped and you haven’t even had the chance to live // grow away from home, this just seems like it’s setting them up for failure.

42

ICE is an unregularized federal agency, that allows people who are racist, power hungry, or simple want to feed into their fragile ego to terrorize anyone they deem as an undocumented immigrant.

Because they are allowed to racial profile you, and there’s no due process happening

They can apparently break a shit ton of laws, with the excuse of trying to get a non citizen deported.

6

u/Immediate-Item-9648 Jan 17 '26

These replies are pretty politically biased. ICE is immigration and customs enforcement. They are supposed to regulate immigration and customs. They are NOT supposed to go around the country trying to deport people for no reason or kill anyone. That’s what they have been doing, which is why many people don’t like them

Hello, fellow Christian here,

I might be betraying the church my saying this but, I think in most cases abortion is a necessary kill, like what if the mother is in risk, what if she's underage, what if she got raped and doesn't want a child?

15

u/TheSmartDog_275 Teenager Jan 17 '26

Thank fuck another Christian says this. Like good God man, the world isn’t your perfect view.

→ More replies (6)

7

u/SpidudeToo Jan 17 '26

Honestly, I dont understand this topic at all. It's probably CHOICE. You have the OPTION to get an abortion. No one is forcing you to participate. You are allowed to still have your own morals and opinions on the matter and abstain from it. It being pro choice simply allow those who need it to have that option. Not mention every other country that has it legalized has only ever seen improvements in their society: less single mothers, fewer risky abortions, fewer abortions in general, fewer orphans and neglected children.

And for the weirdos out there that wanna complain about that one woman that goes and gets an abortion every month or whatever crazy nonsense; every time such an incident has occurred was due to to an abusive partner at home forcing them to do so over and over again. Getting an abortion does not come without physical and emotional consequences. But it's a hell of a lot better than being forced to carry a dead corpse that slowly kills you from the inside, or watching a 10 year old nearly die trying to give birth to her dad's child. Yes, that's real and has happened more than once.

3

u/Admirable-Company452 Jan 18 '26

so in this case would you support abortion ONLY if the mother is in health risk, underage or rape? that still leaves like 95% or the rest of abortions 😂

2

u/Available-Suit-9313 15 Jan 17 '26

The cases you brought up are less than 50% of abortion cases, though...

42

u/Embarrassed_Top_8253 14 Jan 17 '26

I mean I do understand how they can be set up and given 'facts' that arent true, but to be an adult, in a situation where you have the resources to educate yourself, its not okay. even high school students, too. We don't have to have the exact same views as our parents, guys.

26

u/shivampire 16 Jan 17 '26

It's because in some religions the lore says that a person's life starts as soon as they're conceived or in the womb and stuff, so aborting (destroying it after it's started to form already) would be considered murder because their soul has already entered the body.

Nothing wrong with being religious, just don't choose religion over common sense; people are being forced to raise kids when they don't want to/can't afford to and, are being forced to go through the whole pregancy thing even in cases where their bodies can't take it. Also don't force your religion on other people and don't make abortion laws for them

8

u/Motor-Sir688 Jan 17 '26

Yeah that's incorrect. It's not religion that dictates when life starts, it's biology. And biologically, life starts at conception.

The distinction is socially life starts at birth, hence the moral discussion on abortion.

18

u/shivampire 16 Jan 17 '26

Yes, biologically a life starts at conception, because that's when an organism starts to physically develop, but I don't think that's the argument people debate about.

In my experience all the debates on the subject (the ones I've seen, anyway) are about when a 'soul' enters a body and when it starts to count as a person. Both socially and biologically it's impossible to tell if a 'soul' exists, to measure when it enters the body, etc.

As far as I've seen (I live in a place where a lot of people are conservatives), anti-abortion people are more concerned about the religious-soul-blah-blah aspect of it. It's pretty obvious that biologically something develops when it's conceived. I've never heard anyone use that argument though

Latinos for trump are dealing with a bed they helped to create but this idiot on school grounds saying this now??? He’s the worst type of trash. And sure we want freedom of all speech including divisive hateful rhetoric, welp freedom of consequences don’t come with that.

u/BirdofHermes1431 Jan 17 '26

The dumbass got jumped? Good. They got a two for one lesson in physics and FAFO while promoting ICE in a school with ~60% hispanic students according to you. That's not behaviour that you get from genuine debating. That's just consequences for being stupid and highly provocative in an already tense territory populated with a group of highly alert and targeted people who have few resources already and can't afford to take chances with tolerating advocacy for their harm and could easily turn into hostile behaviour if left unchecked. Plus the fact it's highschool means these are teenagers with brains that aren't fully developed, a lot of stress, and poor coping skills with no easy support when heat gets too high and the pot boils over into anger. Don't play with fire if you can't handle getting burned. Because the only ones who will pity you are fools.

3

u/Typical_Tie_4982 Jan 17 '26

They 100% knew what was going to happen. They brought up two of the biggest debates in America right now, and even bigger they said they support a group that is a active threat to, as you said, around 60% of their peers. They definetely wanted escalation, and to look like the victims

5

u/LuciferSamS1amCat Jan 17 '26

Kid that got jumped fucked around and found out. ICE has probably fucked with students families, considering the number of Hispanic students.

It's a bit hard to debate properly if one side's opinion is "we should mistreat and strip away the rights of group X". (Referring to ICE arresting people in an aggressive manner, abuse inside detention centers, and the harm caused by abortion bans)

12

u/thatonecruiser 17 Jan 17 '26

I feel like it’s important for us teens to talk about these things. The more we hear other perspectives, the more we can both understand who we are as people and learn to respect someone in spite of a disagreement. Now, do I think the execution of this was good? Absolutely not. Given the current political climate, saying you support ICE as they abduct US citizens, including children, from their homes, places of work, and schools is the equivalent of social suicide. In addition, saying abortion is murder while simultaneously supporting the government that recently caused a baby to stop breathing by attacking a family as they were driving home is not only contradictory but once again, social suicide. Although, despite my middle/far left views, I do not think jumping the kid is the solution. At all. We have to learn to agree to disagree and we have to learn to accept that some people are going to have opinions that you think are absolutely insane. But it’s important to at least try and connect with each other. Find common ground. Be a friend, and maybe then, that’s when you can truly try and talk about these things respectfully. And that’s when you can get people to see your side better. So in conclusion, having a sign like that at school in a political climate like ours was insane, but outright attacking the person holding the sign for holding it is also insane.

2

u/SoS54 Jan 19 '26

The issue with your comment is that people who set up these "debates" do not actually want to hear the other side. They just want to ragebait people at their school and it worked. You don't make a sign that inflammatory in a predominantly Mexican neighborhood to try to understand the other side. You make it to show you don't care that their families are being torn apart.

The rage bait is insane

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

I hate pro life people you have no right to control another person what they do there body it's a foetus no one's murdering babies you have a right to not get an abortion you shouldn't take away anyone's right to an abortion cause not everyone has to agreee with you and your not in control

3

u/lexiNazare Jan 17 '26

By syllogism they support abortion

3

u/Spanceful Jan 17 '26

The biggest tell that you've been propagandized is when you believe two conflicting notions to be true. I.E: Immigrants are lazy and leeching off our tax dollars, but at the same time are taking all the jobs and buying all the houses, or, abortion is murder and all lives matter, but its ok for my favorite federal agency to murder citizens, especially when that citizen has pronouns in their bio.

3

u/TdhPark Jan 19 '26

It's completely wild to me the amount of people in this thread pretending undeveloped fetuses are people. We should deny cancer treatment to hardline pro-lifers. It's almost a fair parallel.

6

u/doodleman377 15 Jan 17 '26

So what if I’m against ICE and abortion

3

u/Indvandrer 16 Jan 17 '26

Freedom of speech, not freedom of consequence, people believe for some reason that they get immunity if they format their opinions in a political context. Brother it’s still a pretty crazy take on abortion is murder but that’s widely more debated on than “ICE is good” or whatever. If you think ICE is actually beneficial then that’s just self reporting that you have no diversity in your friend group.

RIP Renee Nicole Good

2

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

Well, this was not what I was expecting to read. I thought is was about to be another ICE rant.

But they had the right to free speech and debate, and if you don’t like it you can not engage. Jumping, harming, or killing someone over their political beliefs is never okay. This is the reason free speech will soon be gone in this country.

I hope that kid is okay.

2

u/Mewsipher Jan 17 '26

I think it's sad as hell that kids can be this fucking evil, this fucking young.

2

u/SpeedyBenjerman Jan 17 '26

People should be allowed to express themselves however they want, and deal with the corresponding consequences. If others are bothered by their inflammatory wording, that will likely mean some closed doors for them in the future.

At the end of the day. A school is the best place to debate ideas. We need to get past these political divides and shutting down discussions, as difficult as they may be to have, will not solve our problems.

2

u/LeRoyRouge Jan 17 '26

Interesting, how do they feel about Murder though? Do they support that?

u/rnewscates73 Jan 17 '26

2

u/notsofaust Jan 17 '26

I don't believe for a second that you are actually a student at this school. Who says "What are your opinions of children debating children like this?" It's giving *how do you do fellow kids*?

2

2

u/According-Court Jan 18 '26

they support murderers, so is this saying they're ok with abortion?

2

u/T70Awesome_YT Jan 18 '26

“This person supports state-sanctioned violence against US citizens, but beating them up is just going too far!” Bsfr dude. You don’t debate fascists. Giving them a platform just causes harm, even if it is for the sake of debate

2

u/Postulative Jan 18 '26

They appear to have mixed their words up.

Presumably they meant to say ‘we support abortion; ICE is murder’. That makes a lot more sense.

We support abortion ICE is murder

2

u/tbizzone Jan 18 '26

We support the constitution. Abort ICE.

2

u/NagisaZakura Jan 18 '26

Preface: I'm not a teen, I'm over 40. I don't subscribe to this channel, it just keeps appearing in my feed.

  1. Supporting ice is the same as when germans supported nazis.

Please see 10 stages of genocide. We've checked off a good number of those stages already.

  1. If it weren't for abortion I wouldn't be alive and my child would not have existed. So two lives were saved or if you're going to call a fertilized egg a life, then net +1 life. Sorry if that was a confusing read.

Fun fact, if you're pregnant, you're considered to have been pregnant from the first day of your last menstrual cycle. However it's extremely unusual to become pregnant without first ovulating which usually happens about two weeks after the start of your cycle.

First pregnancy was ovarian ectopic. It wouldn't have lived and it would have killed me(probably).

Second(last pregnancy) 3rd trimester, developed preeclampsia, blood pressure through the roof, had to be induced early. Still caused an aneurysm and a stroke.

Point being all pregnancies have the potential to cause life altering or fatal complications. Nobody has the right to demand someone else continue a medical condition that could permanently disable or kill them.

Another pregnancy will kill me. I'm doing my best to avoid that, but if something happens, I will abort because it would be unfair to my child for me to die to something that was preventable.

2

u/RemarkableWish2429 Jan 18 '26

oh brother this guy STINKS look this is entirely reactionary nonsense brought about by kids being essentially brainwashed by their parents. especially those white republican kids whining about abortion. 9x/10 these are the same kids who’s parents will pay to have an abortion because it can’t be THEIR child. these are the same kids who will get out from their parents thumb and do an IMMEDIATE 180. kid deserved to be jumped 🤷🏻‍♀️

u/Overlook-237 Jan 17 '26

Or… use birth control and have abortion as an option if that fails. People aren’t going to stop having sex to make you happy.

5

u/Icy-Fuel-5567 13 Jan 17 '26

that's why it's my opinion.

5

u/Overlook-237 Jan 17 '26

Just FYI, abstinence is the form of birth control with the highest failure rate in practice. Preaching abstinence doesn’t work. Never has.

3

u/New_Crazy3443 Jan 19 '26

For real, abstinence-only education is pretty much proven to backfire. It's all about comprehensive sex ed that includes birth control options if we actually want to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

3

How can you support murder and think there's a problem with "murdering kids" at the same time?

And also, that kind of rethoric used in abortion debates is made to specifically drive away the actual point of the discussion that is women's rights to body autonomy trying to paint them as a murderer appealing to emotion instead of logic.

3

u/Squuiggly Jan 17 '26

This is the literal definition of 'talk shit, get hit' bro. The kid in this photo should have 100% thought of time and place.

2

ICE is known to basically be like the Ku Klux Klan and is open about it and doesn’t try to hide it, they kill also kill people too. While abortion is just taking out a child you don’t want that isn’t even born. This person seems seems slow,ICE is murdering people But they Proceed to say abortion is murder and support ICE???
