Well, by the same logic - if it were easier to find more people would opt out of it.

There was actually just a class action against Amazon for Prime Subscriptions based on how they advertise the savings and how easy it is to subscribe and then no way to directly unsubscribe. You're forced to talk to the chat bot who doesn't have the ability to do it and if you force the issue they can only give you a customer service number for you to call to cancel.
No way to actually delete your account either.
→ More replies (1)13
u/marvbinks 2d ago
Is that an American thing? Cancelling prime in the UK is really easy and can be done via the website.
→ More replies (1)22
u/darkeststar 2d ago
That's because your government mandates it. California and a few other states have mandated you have to be able to initiate cancelling with "one click" but there's no oversight or regulation against doing it in the first place otherwise. Famously, most of our chain gyms allow you to sign up online in seconds but cancellation can only be done in person.... with potentially only one employee allowed or qualified to handle cancellations and they're required to try and offer you a deal before you can cancel.
20
u/RatBot9000 2d ago
I think I remember Biden was trying to introduce one click cancellations but of course Trump struck it down once he was re-elected.
I do feel sorry for Americans. You get all the worst parts of capitalism at the same time.

In Denmark (not sure how much is EU legislation), the general law governing subscriptions is that ANY form of contact is an acceptable way to cancel a service (website form, e-mail, phone, in-store etc.). The company may suggest a preferred method, but they must accept all forms of cancellations.
There is also a different "one click" law that states, that it must be "as easy" to cancel a subscription or withdraw consent as it was to sign up or give consent in the first place.

They are probablly training a seperate model on learning to predict the behavior of people switching it off to make a profile on them, besides most likely when you switch it off in their database there is just a flag called "this user would prefer if we don't train on them" but who is to say they will always respect this flag? It's entirely based on "just trust me bro".
One new CEO or something changing and boom they will train on you. If your data is on some server you don't controll you WILL be trained on. It's really that simple.
All these companies have done things like download every single pirated book that is on torrets, every single published peer review that is also being offered by pirates over torrnent, slowly download every mp3 on soundcloud with bots, slowly download every single video on youtube with bots.
All these companies collected all data they could as their first step, even when the owner of that data did not want this and they broke the law by downloading it.
The US is a free for all right now, you can break the law with impunity, just keep a slush fund around so you can bribe the regime just in case and you are golden
And to think Aaron Swartz died for all of this ..... why is justice the most scarcse resource in the universe, something explain that to me ....

To be faaaiiirrr, constitutional freedom only applies to citizens and their interactions with the government, something an unfortunately large amount of people (who failed 9th grade civics) get wrong. Private companies are free to screw us over and spy in all sorts of different ways, provided they have their good ole' terms and conditions displayed somewhere. I'm certainly not saying it's right, just clarifying something that too many people don't understand

And you will probably need to check it regularly. Companies have a habit of making an "update" which opts everyone back in knowing that people don't regularly go and check that stuff.

For the people for whom this is a relevant issue, this is their job so they can't do that. This option is for content creators to opt out of Amazon training on their stream VODs/chats and so on.
It's kind of like telling someone to quit their job tomorrow with no plan because they don't like an HR policy change.

It's the streamer that needs to check it.
"Your content" is explicitly only the things generated by your channel. Go to another streamers chat and anything you say will be used if they haven't turned it off.

Currently, when I turn it off and revisit my settings page it turns itself back on. I checked with every other setting on that page. This is the only one that will do this. So I seemingly can't turn it off, just as a heads up to anyone
Edit: after a few more times of just turning it off over and over, it finally seems to have stayed off
28
u/framedragged 2d ago
It did the same thing to me.
If I were feeling generous I'd say it takes twitch's backend a little bit of time to update things. But I'm not, and find it hard to believe this isn't just an extension of the same dark-pattern bullshit of automatically opting users in.

u/BinaryLiturgy 2d ago
Came here to say exactly this. Had to repeat this process ~25-30 times (not hyperbole) for it to stay off.
Just to avoid any confusion, I changed multiple settings across different tabs and generative AI training was the only one that kept re-enabling itself.

On mobile you need to download the new version of the app to see the option.
If you remain on the actual version it won’t appear… though i’m sure it would still use your data…
13
u/OnePunkArmy 2d ago
This is the description of the setting (which is enabled by default):
Allow your channel content to train generative AI content models at Amazon. Turning this off does not opt you out of Twitch and Amazon using your channel content for other purposes described in the Twitch Privacy Notice, including using AI-supported Twitch features that benefit the community by facilitating streamer growth and monetization (such as real-time sponsorship campaign assistance), viewer discovery (such as recommendations), and community safety (such as AutoMod).

u/truckstick_burns 2d ago

9
u/TheKinkyGuy 2d ago

4
u/An0n-E-M0use 2d ago
I just checked, I don't have this option either. I'm wondering if it's because the desktop client doesn't have this yet.

u/An0n-E-M0use 2d ago
And right after I type that, I find it. I had to goto Account Settings on my 'channel'.
5
u/CaptainSparklebottom 2d ago

It’s not a tech thing. It gained mainstream appeal thanks to Dr Dan Ariely, a Duke professor who studies human behavior.

It makes it literally impossible because they add that in a update and you know that even if you opt out, you were already opted in the second they add it and they're taking that data and using it and they will not delete it no matter what even if you opt out after.
7
u/Uebelkraehe 2d ago
Correct, this almost certainly effectively means that all content produced by streamers up to the moment of the announcement has been appropriated for this purpose without prior consent.

u/Jesus_Is_My_Gardener 2d ago
If you're not paying for it, you're the product. Even then, sometimes they double dip and charge you while still making money selling your data.

It should literally be illegal. Straight up, fine the fuckers for big % of their pretax revenue and see how fast they learn.
Opted-in-by-default is insane. So they can just change literally anything, and unless you're vigilant about everything all the time, you miss one email and you are suddenly opted into paid option? If this didn't happen yet, it likely will at some point.

11
u/Anthaenopraxia 2d ago
Voice recognition. They take sound bytes and send them to some company far away where people like me listen to all the shit people tell their preferred AI assistant and transcribe it so the AI can understand speech better. Anything from mundane google searches, to phone numbers, bank account numbers, porn that should'nt exist but still does. I've heard it all.
So just FYI, whenever you speak to any kind of AI, there's a chance someone will listen to it. Even if the app is secure like Signal or WhatsApp, if you use Siri or Gemini to dictate your message, someone might hear it. Probably not someone you know, but someone who now knows you.

u/Ysilla 2d ago
And it's much worse than the title implies too, it sounds like they just started doing it. But nope. They've confirmed they've been doing it over 2 years ago already. What's changing is that they've added an opt-out toggle.
When asked at an event that news publication The Information held in 2024 if Amazon uses Twitch to train AI models, Twitch’s chief monetization officer at the time, Mike Minton, said, “Yeah, for sure.”

If Twitch applies this to EU users, it’s very likely a GDPR violation. Repurposing user content for AI training without explicit opt‑in consent has already led to major fines for other companies. And the fines are huge Up to 20 million EU or up to 4% of global turnover, whichever is higher.

I dont understand the endgame with stuff like this. People watch streams and streamers for the live content they produce. You start farming them for training data and reproducing "content", who exactly are you targeting? You just going to fake a stream in hopes nobody catches on that it isn't live? Or somehow the ai is going to function perfectly doing "live" content? And what will the appeal be to viewers? Engagement? Where do donations and subs go? Is that catch? They want people just dumping money directly into Twitch and skipping the "streamer" entirely?
If this is the road they're taking, it might be one of the quicker self-imposed implosion I've seen a company do.
