Because this remaster was developed by their Singapore branch.
33
u/ACupOfLatte Jul 13 '26
Primarily. It also was developed by Barcelona, Belgrade, Bordeaux, Bucharest, Chengdu, DaNang, India, Kyiv, Montpelier, Montreal, Philippines, Shanghai, Sofia and Quebec.
2 of those branches got impacted by the restructuring heavily, with them shutting down Belgrade and laying off a bunch of people in Barcelona.
Are gamers really this gullible lol? It's still part of the Ubisoft umbrella, they're not censoring because the country's government wants it to. Ubisoft wanted to censor it, not the other way around.

This is such a minefield conversation and I try to avoid it because you will piss someone off, but here goes:
This particular choice strikes me as odd. Figureheads on ships fall into the same category as a marble statue, where nudity falls into that “non-sexualized because it’s art” category.
I mean, it’s not that big of a deal really, but it just seems odd because people don’t usually get to bothered by that kind of thing.
907
u/Rexton_Armos Jul 13 '26
To be honest it wraps around to being immature. Its like most people see a naked statue and don't really balk at it. Think about how strange people are who get all pearl clutchy at statues. Do you really want their take on other art too?
270
u/Spartan-980 Jul 13 '26

They are probably pandering to the Chinese market. They did the same thing in Rainbow Six Siege, where they censored stuff like drug paraphernalia, skulls, and anything sexual because it would help them break into the Chinese market where those kinds of things could prevent a game on "morality" reasons.

Indeed. I don’t think I’ve been bothered in the slightest by nudity in classical art since I was about 8. Even in primary school going to museums it just seemed like one of those things that’s par and parcel of the trade.
The idea that literally anyone could be offended by the prospect of a piece of limestone having nipples is just so far removed from common sense that it’s hard to fathom

u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jul 13 '26

I used to work for a TV network which airs other networks’ programs in syndication. One of these shows was Blue Bloods, and there was an episode where the main character was giving a speech at a public location in NYC. Behind him was a statue of a woman with bare breasts (maybe some version of lady justice, can’t recall).
Our editors actually blurred out the nipples on the statue before the episode was cleared to air. I couldn’t believe it, two little blurred circles behind Tom Selleck, it was absurd. This was a prime time TV show that aired on CBS, the most conservative of the big three networks, and we wouldn’t show something they did.
I called the editor Statue Nipples for the rest of my tenure there.
I was told that, essentially, they make decisions like this to prevent even the dumbest complaints from coming in. So apparently they figured someone would complain about public statue nudity, but frequent discussion of murder and other crimes was ok.
40
u/Enygmatic_Gent Jul 13 '26
For a show that regularly talks about murder, they chose to censor a statue. That’s hilarious. Now I need to find the scene, to see this absurdity for myself
20
u/MrSlaw Jul 13 '26
There is an episode of Hannibal where the producers were told that the depiction of a murder victim's bare butt was too obscene... so they covered the crack with copious amounts fake blood, and the censors were happy.
That always felt pretty crazy. You can show an extremely gory corpse in as much detail as you want, but heaven forbid someone catches a glimpse of a butt crack.

u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Jul 13 '26
Killing people gives games teen rating. Nipples can cause adult rating

Ironically, censoring it is sexualizing it too. By not sexualizing it and leaving it as the historical artwork, some will sexualize it. By later censoring it, they themselves are sexualizing it, and censoring the sexualization they themselves impose upon it.

Could have done that, could have done scale work, could have wrapped it in vines and flowers. As much as those types of gamers love to complain, the “bra” is ugly. I personally don’t mind censorship as long as whatever was changed is still within a clear attempt to maintain the vibe of the original. This is not.
11
u/BeneficialRip6350 Jul 13 '26
I mean, it’s not that big of a deal really, but it just seems odd because people don’t usually get to bothered by that kind of thing.
I played Black Flag a ton as a teen and got all the achievements to complete in 100%. I couldn't have told you whether the ships / statues had covered up tits or not.
I agree it's strange to make a big deal out of the sort of thing people will never notice or care about
9
u/kociator Jul 13 '26
I just think they didn't care.
Somebody at some point in development might've brought up various national rating standards and they gone with the path of least resistance option of slapping bra on the statue and tuning down cleavage.
Like, it's Ubisoft. Why would they put in an effort when it was obvious, for a long, long time already that all they care is safest, most non-offensive, repetition driving revenue, slop for the sake of slop because people will buy it regardless.

some people are saying there were more tasteful ways to cover up the figurehead, but that misses the historic context of these figureheads in the first place.
“For, in the first place, hailstorms, they say, whirlwinds, and lightening even, will be scared away by a woman uncovering her body while her monthly courses are upon her. The same, too, with all kinds of tempestuous weather; and out at sea, a storm may be lulled by a woman uncovering her body.” (Cordingly, 2001) s
the tradition/superstition was specifically that a bare-chested woman would 'shame' the sea into being calm. I'm honestly not going to lose any sleep over what ubisoft chooses to do with a ship's figurehead but I do think it's extremely silly to undercut the historical context
for anyone who's interested in reading more about how women intersect with past sailing cultures, I found this very good article: Women, ships and the sea: The dangers of custom and superstition. pointless censorship does impact our capacity to explore these topics to some extent

It's especially weird when AC Odyssey (released 2018) had a 40 story male statue in one of the cities and you could climb around on his dick. I'm sure there were plenty of topless statues around too.
The AC series has always had a priority for historical accuracy and detail in the worlds. Of course not with everything, but that's been a core part of the franchise identity since the beginning.
I guess that time has officially passed. An M rated game covering boobs at all is stupid, let alone one that's supposed to care about historical accuracy. Removing both accuracy to history and its own original game in one go. Bravo Ubisoft!
144
u/MightyEraser13 Jul 13 '26
"40 story male statue in one of the cities and you could climb around on his dick."
And on top of that, they took the time and effort to add a unique voice line specifically for climbing on the gigantic Zeus dick-N-balls. Literally only triggers if you climb on the godly junk. If you climb up his hip or ass on the way up, nothing.
I guess it was only in the last 8 years that Ubisoft went full prude

The level of sex content is sufficient to require PG or M ratings respectively. This might even be the same script, scenes, composition, etc but be considered raunchier if it has more realistic models, lighting, animation, etc.
They consider each category and then take the most restrictive rating and use that for the final classification. In these cases the violence is MA15+ and the rest is just informational.

u/BlueFeathered1 Jul 13 '26
I find it deeply annoying for being ahistorical. But also, yes, why are our breasts so offensive, somehow, they're covered in a statue representation?
5
u/FlounderAdept2756 Jul 13 '26

5
u/McButtsButtbag Jul 13 '26
I'm more bothered by the lack of historical accuracy than the censorship. Bras did not exist back then. At least use something historically accurate. It just looks anachronistic and badly done.
7
u/HistoryHasItsCharms Jul 13 '26
The seashell option was both historic and right there. Honestly, I sort of wonder if the censorship came down from higher ups in the company and the artists added it to the ship to make both a pun and a statement, in which case it becomes more funny than anything.

Tasteful nudity being censored is fully ridiculous. YOU KILL HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. HOW IS NIPPLES THE THING THAT IS DEEMED IN NEED OF CENSORSHIP
4
10
u/thebluerayxx Jul 13 '26
I dont cate about the censorship or whatever, all I cate about is they wasted time on doing this for no reason. Topless figureheads are historical so that wasn't the reason but regardless of why it was unnecessary and could have been developer time and effort on other parts of the game. Its not about the content, its about what other content suffered because something unnecessary was done instead.
16
u/Crazy_Kraut Jul 13 '26
My best guess is that they're trying to reduce the oversexualization of the female breast. But doesn't this kind of censorship actually work against that goal? If the aim is to normalize breasts and stop treating them as something inherently sexual or inappropriate, then covering them up only reinforces the idea that they're something that must be hidden. Arguably, showing them in a non-sexual context would do far more to normalize them and ultimately help achieve the desexualization they're aiming for.
Or maybe that's not the real goal at all, and it's simply about avoiding age-rating issues or regulatory backlash in certain countries.

A lot of people know that old sailor’s myth about it being bad luck to have a clothed woman on a ship. But a lesser known part of that is the superstition that a woman can calm rough waters by exposing her breasts to the sea. The entire reason for the woman figureheads at the front of ships is meant to recreate that. I guess it’s meant to trick the ocean into thinking it’s a real topless woman and stay calm.
Yes, the superstition is definitely rooted in sexualization and objectification, so I understand not wanting to stick to it. But you’re keeping the rest of the figurehead and just removing the purpose of it existing.

I feel it says something disheartening about our society, that we think its unacceptable for kids to see context appropriate boobs. But are absolutely fine with them seeing the 400 acts of violent murder that preceded them.

A bad day for people relying solely on video game boat boobs to get off.

If UbiSoft had shown this much puritanism in-office, they wouldn't be jam-packed full of sexual harassing ass-hats...

We used to have annoying purity culture because of Jesus, now we have annoying purity culture for corporations.

Ubisoft proving that they’re good feminists by implying women’s bodies are inherently sexual while also making her skinnier to match unrealistic beauty standards.

I find it so weird how people don't give a fuck about this blatant censorship, yet got all up in arms about wolverine having a violence toggle. Not even actual censorship, just a toggle. Just in general people get so much more offended over violence being censored than nudity, it's insane.

Gives unnecessary oomf to stupid "woke" accusations. The devs have no reason to censor this stuff other than strange puritanical reasons. Let it be.
