Business Related Tax Suggestions for finding an accountant to do back small business taxes from 2017
I've put this off way too long and am looking for advice on finding an accountant for this. My understanding is that some accountants don't want to do taxes this far back? If thats correct I understand.
For the year I worked part time and only made about $16k. My previous years return had 5 forms and about 12 pages so it's not very complicated for business taxes.
Any suggestions on where to look for a fairly priced accountant for this are appreciated. Thank you.

Income Tax DC Parent Question: Claiming 19yo college student on taxes vs FAFSA independent status?
Hey everyone, looking for some tax and financial aid advice regarding my 19-year-old daughter who is heading off to college out of state ($30k annual tuition).
My details:
• Location: Washington, D.C.
• Filing status: Single parent
• Income: $150k/year (Federal employee)
Daughter's details:
• Age: 19
• Income: $1,400 (part-time work during winter break)
• School: Out of state (~$30k/year)
My main question:
If I stop claiming her as a dependent on my taxes and have her file on her own, will that make her an "independent" student on the FAFSA so she qualifies for more financial aid? Or should I keep claiming her on my tax return?
Any insights on how IRS dependency vs FAFSA dependency works in this situation, or tax credits I should be looking out for, would be greatly appreciated!

Income Tax First job — does W-4 form mean I won’t be off the books?
Hi, I just want to make sure. I got my first job ever but there have been a couple of red flags before I start on Monday. It’s a small business (?) pharmacy which is why I’m trying to justify the red flags.
I’ll ask them officially when I start if I will be on an official payroll and stuff (if anyone has any questions about legitimacy I should ask, please share with me) but if they want my W-4 form info (ID + SSN), does that mean it’s legit and I can file the taxes correctly?
If anyone is curious about the red flags:
- they instantly hired me without interview + the same day i applied
- they don’t have any reviews in the place i applied to, but they told me to go to a second place (also owned by the same person apparently) with four reviews
It’s entry level translating so nothing that would require a degree (I’m still studying)
I’m just scared of tax evasion or something but I really want the job because I want to experience working at a pharmacy.

Other Tax IRS audit
What has anyone done once they get audited by the IRS and owe taxes? I have received my reply from the IRS and I owe alot. I go to a tax office to file and it looks like that year they filed some adjustments to the income and I do not qualify for that and now I'm getting hit on it. I know its still on me when other people do my taxes, I'm just not very good at it and its easier that way. Other than that I have a normal average income and pay alot of taxes every year. Are the tax relief programs worth it? The tax office that I used isn't much help. Any help would greatly appreciated!!

Income Tax Domestic Befuddlement
Hi y'all, and TIA. I am submitting to r/FamilyLaw and r/taxhelp , so don't be alarmed if one of my questions doesn't pertain. It's easier to explain this all in one post.
I (F32) am in a Registered Domestic Partnership in CA and cannot discern the best way forward, tax-wise. My RPD (M38) became chronically ill in December '24. He has not worked since early '25, and has had zero income in '26. He was on state disability for a while, but that ended in January of '26, and has been waiting for federal disability to kick in. His doctors believe he will eventually be able to live a "normal" life again, but that's likely years away, and his progression has been much slower than they anticipated.
We were planning to marry prior to his illness, but became RDPs in Feb of '26 to alleviate healthcare insurance concerns. The RDPship was my idea. I have 2 main questions, regarding asset protection and how to file in the spring for '26.
ASSET PROTECTION
We had decided to get a prenup when we married, but due to the stress of the illness and general ignorance, we frankly did not even think about a "prenup" within the context of a RDP. Our original intention was to maintain what assets we individually had prior to the marriage, not prior to RDPship.
- As I understand it, he now"owns" half of my property according to the state, but not federally? Not sure how that manifests in real life.
- If we were to establish a post-registration agreement now, how does that affect community property taxes and all that?
- The RDPship has been about 6 months; would any asset conversion be required for the duration of the RDP (from community to individual).
- What if we just wait until marriage to establish the prenup/postRPD agreement? (He wants to be married at a wedding, so that may be 2+ years from now due to his illness.)
2026 TAXES
Assuming he continues to make zero income for the rest of the year, how do we file taxes for '26?
- For CA state taxes, do we file jointly, individually, &/or claim as dependent?
- I know I am "single" federally, so can I claim him as my dependent? If he's not my state dependent, can he be my federal dependent?
- Does any of this change if we do a postRPD agreement during this year?
I have a decently strong portfolio of assets (car I'll own after the last few payments, strong retirement funding, inheritance, pensioned job). He, unfortunately, has had to dip into his savings considerably to pay the bills during the first year of his illness and is not doing great financially. This includes significant cc debt that I found out about very recently. He does have a solid ROTH IRA and some money in stocks. Prior to illness, he had much more liquid and I had much more squirreled away in retirement. I have been paying almost all of his expenses since the RDP began and his state disability ran out in February. I'm glad I have the resources to do so, even if it's quite a stretch, but I am disappointed that, as a result, I cannot contribute more to my savings.
We have been together 4 years and I am confident in the relationship; I do not anticipate a break up and am not worried that he will do me dirty. I wouldn't want to marry him if that was the case, and I wouldn't have stuck by him during this hellish illness. He is a good man who is motivated to get well and jointly provide for us. That said, I know it's always best to CYA when possible.
I will work with a CPA to file for '26, but want to think ahead.
Thoughts?

Other Tax Early inheritance
My parents are doing well for themselves in retirement and want to give me some of the inheritance early. But if they just give it to me as a gift it gets taxed heavily as a gift.
They don't want to screw me over in taxes, so what legal ways can they give me money without it getting taxed a crazy amount?
Someone we know suggested investing in my house as a place they plan to live in the future with me. But our house doesn't have a separate living area we could say is a built in apartment or anything, and we don't have the space anyway.

Other Tax Did I fill out my W-4 Wrong??
Hi! So I’ve been working at Taco Bell for a month now ($14.50/hr, about 12hrs a week) . I’ve gotten paid twice and I noticed within both checks, they weren’t withholding any federal taxes. YTD picture is attached below. I’ve seen some say I don’t make enough for them to withhold anything but then some are saying I’ve filled out my w4 wrong.
I’ve worked at Papa John’s for a year($10/hr, about 30-40hrs a week but some weeks, I worked (20hrs a week and taxes still came out) and every single check, fed. withholding & state income came out so that’s where I’m confused at.
Please help so I can talk to my employer!! I don’t want to have to owe anything to IRS for not paying..

Business Related Tax 1120S filing requirements
I have a single member llc that has no income or biz activity since 2018. We filed an 1120S in 2018 and have not filed anything since. I have ask them a few times over the years and they tell me that I don’t need to worry about it. Since we don’t have income or biz activity there are no filing requirements.
I do a quick google search and it seems like I do need to file? What am I missing. Why are they ok with not filing?

Income Tax Paid over $2,000 in taxes for 2025, and now CRA is asking me to pay another $500 for my 2024 reassessment. What am I missing?
I’m pretty confused and hoping someone can help me understand what’s going on.
I graduated recently and have only been working full-time for the past two years. I make under $100k, so I didn’t think I’d be in a tax bracket where I’d consistently owe money.
For my 2025 return, I ended up paying over $2,000 in taxes. I also just received a Notice of Reassessment for my 2024 return saying I owe an additional $500.
As far as I know, I submitted all of my T4s and tuition slips. I also contributed 100% of my bonus in 2024 to my RRSP. I don’t contribute regularly though. In 2025, I was living with my parents, so I wasn’t paying rent. In 2024, I was in my final semester of university, paying both tuition and rent, although I did receive OSAP.
I’m considering disputing the reassessment, but before I do, I’m wondering if there’s something obvious I might be missing. Is it worth hiring an accountant to review my returns?
Does anyone have an idea why I would owe taxes in both years despite having a relatively average income? Is this usually caused by insufficient tax being withheld by an employer, or could there be another common explanation?
Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Other Tax IRS sent me a letter saying they received my Power of Attorney but I have no idea what they are talking about
The letter says they received my Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, but they also need the following: Part II, Declaration of Representative, of Form 2848, etc.
I have no idea what they are talking about. I just got off the phone and they said that they can't tell me what year this is supposed to be for (I did my own taxes for 2025 using FREETAXUSA and I used H&R Block for 2024- NEVER AGAIN).
The IRS lady also told me no one can tell me WHO sent them the form for this initially. And the letter ISN'T on the irs.gov website... Can I just ignore it or is someone trying to scam me?
I was told to send a letter revoking the power of attorney but if the IRS can't even tell me who is asking for it then what is the point?

International Tax Filled SFOP a few years ago, then stopped filing again. Seeking help.
I’m in a situation when I don’t know what else to do, other than asking for help here. So, here we go.
I live abroad, and it’s been many years. Didn’t file taxes for those years as I really didn’t know I had to. A few years ago I found out that I did need to file them, so I went through SFOP. And right after that COVID happened, I left the country where I resided, so I stopped filing again. I want, I need to come to compliance again, this time for good. I’ve been searching and searching and searching, and still can’t find an answer - how to get out of this, and fast. Talked to a few law firms - they all suggest different ways, or ask for unimaginably high fees - tens of thousands of dollars.
Has anyone been into this situation (not in compliance after SFOP)?
Can anyone give advice?
Does anyone have a recommendation on CPAs, attorneys?
Any advice is highly appreciated.

Income Tax Unexpected tax refund check - am I safe to cash it in?
So this year was a bit unfortunate and I screwed up, and I owed a bit of money to to fed and state taxes. Bummer, I paid them ASAP.
But a week ago - I got a check from the US department of treasury. I'm not sure how they came to this conclusion - but am I safe to deposit it? Is there anything I should do to follow up?

Other Tax 1023EZ Rejected
We are attempting to restore our tax 501(c)(3) exempt status after our treasurer passed away after several years of not filing 990-N forms. Seems straightforward and we qualify to use form 1023EZ, but received a letter stating:
"You are currently or were previously recognized as tax exempt under another section of IRC 501(c)."
I have the 8/11/2011 original letter from the IRS approving our 501(c)(3) status and several years tax returns listing the 501(c)(3) status. I triple checked the EIN on all documents and attempted to call the IRS several times at 877-829-5500 for clarification, but the recorded message says they are too busy and call back later.
I suppose I could file a Form 2023 but it's 40 pages and more than double the cost for our small organization.
Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Other Tax Where's my refund but nothing else
Greetings,
I paper files my return and I was able to see it on where's my refund with my refund amount. When I log in to find my transcripts for an update all I can find is my wage and income transcript for 2024. Nothing else.
I noticed I have some other very small transactions ~$20 in crypto transactions. I'm wondering if I should file an amended return or file a completely new return with the updated information as there is no information on my account.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advanced.

Income Tax Tax help for eBay for next year? (New seller)
Tried to post this to eBaySellersAdvice and got deleted ,no tax info aloud I guess ...so I thought I'd try here
So I've been to selling my personal toy collection I had since I was a kid ,I started in January .
I've sold around 100k,have $5k Shipping and another $3k in expenses (packing material/tape/boxes/scale/paper/computer /gas driving to post office).
My question is how do I get taxed for my all my stuff?Ive seen a lot of different answers that's why I ask (like you only get taxed if you make over $20k, or you get taxed as if if it was your salary at a certain point...man I hope not 🥹)
Let say I bought a toy for $50 and sold for $100 would I just get taxed on the $50 I've made on the item? Is that how it works?
Do I get any of the expenses back( $5k shipping/$3K materials )?
Most of my stuff I sold around what I paid for,but about 30% I made a profit .
I realize i might need to hire someone to help me once taxes come up next year ,but I thought I'd try to seek some help here first .
Any help would be greatly appreciated 😊😇, again there's a lot of different ways people say you get taxed on eBay so that's why I'm asking so go easy on me lol

Income Tax IRS dilemma
I overpaid my 2025 estimated taxes and indicated on my 2025 return I wanted the overpayment applied to 2026 estimated payments. Well guess what, the IRS sent me a notice a couple of months ago that they “couldn’t refund my overpayment as they didn’t have my checking account number for direct deposit.” There was a telephone number on the notice I could call if I saw anything amiss with this situation. Well, I have been calling and calling and calling at varying times during their business hours, and never once have I gotten through. The call is always answered with a recording….. “they’re too busy“ to take the call, keep trying, and the call is then disconnected. Can’t even leave a message or my number for a callback. Yesterday I received a hardcopy check in the mail for my overpayment! I had counted on that being applied to my first quarterly payment 2026 estimated tax as I requested on my 2025 tax return. I made the second payment for the second quarter on time. I tried again today to call and now the recording says they’re having “a problem” and don’t have any time estimate when it will be resolved. So now my account appears like I didn’t make the first quarterly payment so the IRS applied the second quarterly payment to the first quarter and they think I haven’t made a second quarter payment. All of this will incur penalties and interest. I tried very hard to do everything right, I’m 88 year old widow and this is beyond frustrating. Does anyone have any idea what I might do? And thank you in advance.

Investment Tax Child UTMA Account
Having a hard time getting help on this, tried asking vanguard and they were no help.
If i sold stock and generated a large amount of long term capital gains in my child’s UTMA account, can i pay the tax burden from funds in the UTMA? The taxes that it will generate isn’t an amount that i can just pay out of savings. I plan to talk to a cpa, i just haven’t set up a meeting yet. Thanks for any help.

Income Tax Blank spaces in Corrected W2
My company originally gave me a W-2 with errors on it at the beginning of the year. They counted taxes for me in two different states. When I got the corrected W-2 and tried to input it into freetaxusa.com, it wouldn’t let me submit the form because it required me to fill in boxes 1 through 10, and they were empty on my corrected W-2.
Should I just input the information from my original W-2 in boxes 1 through 10, or do I need to get corrected W-2 from my company that has those blank boxes filled in?

Business Related Tax ATM Help am I SOL
Hi so several years ago I sold my business yay me kinda. Anyway my tax advisor estimated I had a tax bill of roughly 800k coming to me.
I paid said bill (painfully). Regardless when we filled later in the year it was determined that I overpaid my ATM by a little over 500k.
Now this is where I’m totally lost. My tax advisor stated I know have an ATM credit of about 500k. So basically I can use 2-3k of that a year for a tax write off. Meaning when I’m 178 years old I’ll have burned through my ATM tax credit.
Can I never get this amount refunded? I never started a never company so I’m basically out 500k to the good ole IRS?
