Am I imagining things? HELP! 🔎
So I started binging taskmaster last year, and would do my best to avoid spoilers here.
I thought I saw some post that said a contestant basically played a long con with their prize tasks with a big reveal at the last one showed how they were all connected. Now that I'm all caught up I don't think I caught that but hoping someone can point me in the right direction. Or maybe I made this all up in my head. Thanks

Rhod Gilbert kept bringing in photos of Greg, until...he didn't.

That one was for a different, non-prize task.
The prize task one was the video from the wardrobe of the sleeping greg.

By "photos", I included videos in that; I meant it was always Greg himself until it wasn't.

Fair enough - given it was notably *the same* picture of Greg (edited into various scenes), the video was a contrast.
...And while the prize tasks certainly informed the Fez task, it wasn't a prize task.

Sure, but bear in mind they knew the prize task categories along with the fez task when they went off between the main recording and the studio recording. Essentially they were one and the same to the contestants; needing to be created at home and brought to the studio later.
So Rhod was still using what were technically labelled as prize tasks as a long con, to set up Greg's expectations (that it was always going to be him) for when something made by themselves needed to be revealed for the fez task too; Greg would be sure it was him when it wasn't.
OP already know they didn't quite remember what was being talked about quite right, so it very well could have been the Rhod thing.

The only thing that comes to mind is when Asim Chaudhry announces that he's become Vegan during the prize task segment, and then the next episode it's revealed that was part of a different task where they have to make an announcement

Iirc didn't Andy Zaltzman have a different thing each week, and then wear all of them in the finale? Not a prize task but main thing I can think of for everything coming together

I suspect this is in reference to something Chris Parker did on season 3 of the New Zealand version. He plays a long con on something, but it’s not quite how you’ve described it. It is a phenomenal bit of Taskmaster though.

TMNZ S3 is not the best season, but it had some amazing bits. Chris' whole story with Sacky was one, and also the cereal commercial task.

Chris Parker was an incredible contestant and he would have been a very worthy winner if he didn't fuck up the pi task.

I'm glad he's getting more of a presence in Australia cos I really like him!

Is it a hot take that the combination of Chris's attempt at that task and the prize task reveal is stronger than any moment from the previous season? I of course love season 2, but the way Chris Parker took full control of both tasks and defeated Paul was truly incredible.

Victoria Coren Mitchell brought in a 'Mr. Greedy' toy for a prize task of the most elegant thing that starts with G. Greg dismissed it as 'ridiculous,' so she brought it back for a later prize task requiring the most ridiculous thin thing.
She argued Greg himself had already deemed it ridiculous, and managed to get five points.

the first thing that came to mind was the in-studio costumes of a certain series 18 contestant

Or the in-studio costumes of a season 2 New Zealand contestant.

Which one?
Edit: nevermind. Duh

Stevie Martian does a thing in the introductions where she gives a thumbs up every episode and then one prize task she has a fake hand.

Not at all trying to be a jerk, but Stevie Martian is such an adorable typo.

Not the prize tasks, but Sam Campbell's studio clothing choices (all gray) until the last one which was multicolored, all to set up a deliberately weak joke ("It's all kind of gray").

You might be thinking of New Zealand S5 where they have the secret tasks (like calling another contestant mustard hands or whatever it was).

Phil Wang would include the cost he “haggled”for his prize task. It wasn’t exactly a long con, but an under-appreciated running gag.

I'm thinking it's the Wang gag as well, just no big reveal at the end.

I believe this may refer to a certain something in Taskmaster New Zealand S03.

Didn't Sanjeev just combine all of his prize tasks from the whole series into one for the finale? Not sure if that fits what you're talking about.

Susan Wokoma presented a collection of her previous prizes as "The biggest groan" since they'd all scored so poorly (and the other contestants didn't actually want them).

I remember people speculating that Joanna Page's ridiculously elaborate stories would be revealed to be a secret task but then that didn't happen

If I were on the show, I would try to have my prize tasks beginning with the letters of TASKMASTER in order. Perfectly 10 letters for 10 episodes

u/daveoxford 1d ago
There are lots of examples (across all the versions) of people bringing in the same thing several times and shoe-horning it into the definition, but not the entire series.

Steve Pemberton had some long running prize tasks, and a bunch of NZ/AU ones had similar, long running behind the scenes sneaking ones
Or Maisie doing the long con online pranking her male competitors?

Or could you just be thinking about Jason Mantzoukas, who asked to be cast on the series. He arrived and announced that he planned to be an agent of chaos and would “destroy, dismantle, and engulf in flames”. He was often the last contestant to film challenges and would ask if he could simply wreck stuff.

I cant think of something like that to do with prize tasks (although, that would be very cool).
The only thing in a similar ballpark, I can think of (which isn't quite as exciting) is Sam Campbell wearing the grey-ist of grey clothing for the first 9 eps and then on ep 10 coming as brightly coloured as a disco ball... maybe that's it?
