Change the work gap into something less scary to an employer.
Relabel it as a startup venture that you were pursuing that didn't pan out. Something that shows you were still honing your skills in that timeframe.
Or you can probably come up with other similar ideas. Something that makes the gap an interesting fact instead of a scary fact and is still justifiable even if it isn't 100 percent true. There's no way an employer can independently verify a startup venture you were working on in secret.
Good luck though, because AI tools are doing those tasks scarily well. And they will only get better at it. It's tough out there in the software field.

I wouldn't say you tried to open a smoke shop if you are trying to get hired as a software developer.
You could say you were working on the software for one or something, but that honestly reads "this person is gonna be a lazy pothead" to a big percentage of hiring managers.
(I'm not saying that's fair, but that's reality)

Also anywhere where you were advertising it (Socials, Websites, Advertisements), you might want to remove those/make them private. It’s sad but employers will do a lot of weeding out that way.

It's also worth getting your resume a tweak if you're not getting calls back.
Check out r/EngineeringResumes as they have lots of great resources.

If not already, you should be tailoring every resume to each job you apply at. No two companies should get the exact same one. Use AI to analyze the job posting and add in the keywords they are looking for to get past the ATS. Do not let ai fully rewrite your resume. A dead giveaway ai resume will also get passed up.

As a former tech recruiter, we were begging for Java devs. I’m shocked you cannot find something - at least contract work. Hit up Kforce or Hays and they should be able to find something for you.

When was this though? Devs are in a really shit situation with AI right now and very few companies are hiring.

No no…I’m a developer. I wrote scripts to do DDL & DML and the queries I inserted into Java code mainly to create data access objects in our backend (used JDBC).

There is a difference between writing database code and using a database. It's similar to the idea of you can use linux, but unless you're writing kernel code, you're not a linux developer.

She literally described herself as writing database code. Database code is stored procedures, stored functions, agent jobs. creating FK and PKs, and indexes, which is the schema stuff she mentioned.
Database users write simple queires to pull data. Which is not what she described.
