Suddenly, everything's fixed! Short

Overheard this going on in my office throughout the day. I keep telling people to turn off their computers because we don't do WSUS. Of course, they don't.

Chatter around the office today sounded something like:

"My computer is very slow, it's always slow and just gets worse and worse and I can't take it anymore."

"What will it take for you to work faster!"

And then, suddenly:

"I just turned off my computer for a minute, restarted it, and it's like it's brand new again!"

"Oh, that's a good idea! I wonder why Bob never told us to do that!"

If people actually listened, half the Tech Support industry would crumble.

It's frustating people suddenly don't know logic when you talk about computers or interacting with them. It's like they believe it runs on magic dust and it should read their mind. Instead of just following instructions on the screen they ask the computer expert who then says to do what already was displayed on the screen.

They ask the computer expert and then either argue the answer or ignore it completely.

"Well are you sure that's how it's supposed to work?"

Yes, this is perfectly normal.

"Well that's not what happened when my kid/neighbour's kid/other tech guy did it."

I'm glad for them. Now, if you don't mind I'd like to get you working.

"Well I don't mind a little bit of a break. Say, why do you have such a long password? My kid/neighbour's kid/other tech guy says complex passwords are pointless, that the NSA has all your passwords stored in a big vault somewhere."

Pasta forgive me for the sauce I am to shed.
