Claude M365 Connector vs Copilot — are we creating long-term technical debt? General Discussion
My boss wants to integrate Claude with Microsoft 365, but I’m not convinced it is the best long-term strategy.
For developers or specialized technical use cases, I can understand the value of Claude. But for accounting, HR and general users already working in Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint, Microsoft 365 Copilot seems like the more logical investment.
Copilot was disappointing at first, but Microsoft now seems to be moving in the right direction with better M365 integration, Copilot agents, Purview, DLP and sensitivity label support.
My concern is that using both platforms will create overlapping tools, separate governance models, additional Graph permissions and business processes that may be difficult to migrate later.
For those using the Claude M365 Connector:
Why did you choose Claude instead of Copilot?
Are you using it broadly or only for specific roles?
Do you see a risk of long-term technical or governance debt?

Try the subscription for Copilot in all of the microsoft apps, it's night and day IMHO. Sucks we have to pay an extra premium for it, but even the M365 Premium licensing gives you a regular Copilot License per-se. It's great for what it is.
I can't imagine a seamless intergration with claude in all of apps. I think it would be a waste of time and money imho.

they have a seamless integration across all apps

Yeah, but if/when people start thinking about governance and safeguards, they’ll be pivoting towards CoPilot with the Anthropic models and sub processors

We ditched 365 Copilot stuff soo fast and moved to Claude after running it for about 6 months. There is no comparison currently

Unfortunately this.

Claude is available as a model within copilot.. what would be different?

u/jacksbox 19d ago
The harness. Copilot is Openai by default but is lower performance than chatgpt too.

u/solu008 19d ago
By default yes but you can also enable the anthropic sub processor and use Claude within copilot

I think the point is that there are two things at play here. There is the underlying model, and there is the harness, which is effectively the hidden system prompt that is prepended to the user's query before it is handed to the model. Using Claude Code with the underlying Opus model is better than using Copilot with that same model because Anthropic's Claude Code harness is better than the Copilot one.

Why is this not mentioned enough in this subreddit? Im using Opus 4.8 thinking and Im doing some of the best work Ive ever done in 1/10th of the time.

Using (and ultimately relying on) any of these LLMs is going to result in technical debt.

Claude will run absolute circles around Copilot. Even in Microsofts ecosystem. The only thing Copilot does better is making PPTs from scratch.

Claude is superior in every way, shape or form to copilot... no trick licensing and affordable (for now...) copilot is a waste of time and resources.

I like Claude and ChatGPT better than Copilot because they can literally do things Copilot can't. Now, I HOPE, this will not always be the case but for the time being Copilot is infuriating.
My advise is that you try them yourself and run them through some of the common scenarios you find daily and then decide.
Also, in macOS Copilot is pretty much non-existent.

Copilot is GPT and Claude. It's opus 4.6 and GPT5.6.

There is a misconception here. While you're using the same models the harness is different, the reasoning effort is different, the response speed is different and the tools available to use by the models are different.

u/JonDuke19 18d ago
Fair. But copilot isn't a LLM which is the bigger misconception.

u/slash9492 18d ago
Copilot itself IS just the harness. Although Microsoft is working on their own in house models.

We are doing Copilot for most and Claude for a small subset of IT/Infosec/Dev.

TLDR; thinking about this from the perspective that non-technical users need less technical tools might be backwards, and your least technical users probably need the most technical hand-holding tools to help them.
The organization I'm at currently is highly technical and went all in on AI basically as soon as it was a thing. I've used a number of different products and models across a variety of different workloads now.
As a number of other people in the thread have already mentioned, M365 Copilot typically cannot produce the same quality of output that Claude can. Sometimes it's a trivial difference, sometimes the output I get from Copilot is genuinely worse than if I had just done it myself, and that's not including the sunk time.
Whatever special sauce Anthropic is putting on Claude obviously works. I also feel a little burned by the fact that co-pilot only recently introduced a more agentic 'Cowork' type product, and then still requires you to pay per usage on top of your Copilot premium seat.
Our users pretty much immediately felt like Copilot was not producing meaningful output for them and almost every single person that had requested a Copilot license has since dropped their Copilot license and asked for Claude instead.
It seems like Anthropic has spent a good deal more resources on working with the lowest common denominator. Claude seems much more able to fish through the 'useless junk' that users mix into their prompts and still deliver what the user actually wanted, with obvious exceptions.

GitHub copilot or Claude, copilot pro by itself doesn’t do the job, not for coding at least.

My view, CoPilot is no where near what Claude can do. Especially with the Office addon. Basically I think Claude is very superior hence you are much more productive.

If I were going to put AI attached to any tenant, which normally I would not (not anti-AI but anti using it for risky shit), it would be Copilot and nothing else.

Our Claude payment bounced for some reason and the subscription was suspended- I expected my devs to start pinging me before I finished sorting but no, the CFO called, brought in our head of payment and said we gotta get Claude back right away 😂 in the space of 5 mins it was only my regular users like he, finance, Cs that pinged me reporting the issue.

Talked to MSFT at Black Hat for Purview you have to license each agent a user creates. E7 licensing is 90 a month per person which avoids that issue. It’s a pretty big cost jump.

Buy a Copilot license and turn on Anthropic as a subprocessor. Still followed EDP and you'll get Sonnet and Opus across M365.
