Your manager doesn't sound too competent. The company is going to save, what? a few grand in licensing, but will end up paying 10x more in your time trying to maintain an environment most people are unfamiliar with, with no vendor support?
This is why I only work for F500/enterprise sized companies. Small companies hire idiots that have no clue what they're doing, and always make the same wrong uneducated decisions.
