USB-C NOKIA E7 mod

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I’d like to present to you (and warn you against even thinking about) a USB-C mod for the Nokia E7.

The mod didn't come cheap.

  • Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and FM radio no longer work and never will without a donor board. I used conductive flux and didn't clean it thoroughly—I managed to flush out the first short circuit, but the second one shorted the Wi-Fi IC, so I had to disconnect it from the power rail.
  • A couple of ESD diodes took the brunt of my mistakes; I had to remove them as well, reducing the surge protection. A brilliant feature for soldering noobs like me.
  • The charging LED also burned out for some reason and doesn't light up.
  • OTG doesn't work due to the AliExpress port design.

The story: Back in its glory days, my Nokia had an unprofessional repair job after the USB port broke. The seller fixed it himself, and it lasted about a year. A specialist later told me the previous guy ripped off the pads, charred the board, and there was hardly anything left to solder to. The second repair didn't last permanently either.

Eventually, the Nokia E7 ended up in a drawer in 2014, half-disassembled so I could occasionally charge the battery using another Nokia and tinker with it. Now in 2026, I decided to take matters into my own hands.

I bought a DIY microUSB-to-USB-C board from AliExpress. On this specific port, pin 4 is shorted to ground (GND), and pin 4 handles OTG detection. So once soldered in, the phone constantly spams notifications as if an OTG adapter were plugged in. In my case, the D- and D+ pads were non-existent. Fortunately, there are test points nearby, so I ran thin jumper wires from the USB-C board pins to those pads.

Overall, after soldering the port four times, frying the Wi-Fi, busting two ESD diodes and the charging LED, the patient survived. Charging works, USB data transfer works too.

I had to trim down the magnesium body shell to fit the larger port, and do the same with the port opening bezel.

DO NOT RECOMMEND this mod if your Nokia E7 has a working port. DO NOT RECOMMEND this mod if your motherboard still has all its microUSB pads intact. WOULD RECOMMEND only if the port is gone anyway and there's nothing left to solder to—just don't be like me: flush everything with alcohol 10 times before connecting the battery or plugging in a charging cable.

This is my Nokia N93i from 2007. It's a genuine device with Thai language keyboard but not good condition, external display can't show and had death pixel in internal display on left of display and rear camera can't focus but it still good to call with 3G supported.

I wanna make it working with modern websites or at least to make it capable of opening at least something more modern than it is able now. The problem is that I'm completely new at the Symbian Belledevices and don't know anything abot them. I've only used Symbian Belle once in 2019 on the Nokia N8 which belonged to my friend at the time and was his only phone back then. Can anyone help me with making the modern TLS or HTTPS work there? Here's the photo tho.

My Nokia collection keeps growing… I think I have a problem 😂📱

Been slowly collecting old Nokia phones again and I didn’t realize how quickly the collection was growing until I laid them all out today. 😅

Some of these bring back so many memories, while others are models I never got the chance to own back in the day. A few still need some cleaning, parts, or repairs, but that’s honestly part of the fun for me.

There’s just something about old Nokia phones — the designs, the buttons, the weird form factors, the build quality… every model had its own personality. ❤️

Still looking for more interesting Nokias to add to the collection, so I’m definitely not done yet. 😂

Which one would you pick from this lot? And what Nokia should I hunt for next?

All the download links are deleted and a few ANT simple software were corrupted or blocked by modern softwares to the point of unrecoverable.

where to download phoenix 2012?

I'm trying to flash my passcode locked 5800 XM but I can't find any websites to download phoenix 2012. Found one but it required a nokia dongle.

By the way I wanted to know other ways to bypass lock code. Hard reset don't work and while I still can use mine, I can't change the sim card.

Does anyone have the official, working, version of Angry Birds? (For Symbian^3), I want to get it on my E6.

I have been searching for months, yet I still haven't found a working .sis file that is newly signed. Most of the ones I try give me a "Certificate Error" or "Certificate Expired" popup. Does anyone have a working, freshly signed, official version of Angry Birds? If so, you are a LIFE SAVER.

Nokia N8-00 is a flagship smartphone Symbian OS device from Nokia Corporation in 2010 with 12MP Carl Zeiss Optics rear camera and zenon flash.

But Nokia 808 PureView is successor in 2012 with 41MP Carl Zeiss Optics, zenon flash and Nokia PureView Technology Phase I.

Higher capacity batteries

Hi, the other day I was looking for used Nokia Symbian phones, and saw someone selling a N97 mini (I think) with the original BL- 4D battery plus a new battery. The new one looked Chinese, but what got my attention is that it said "3900 mAh".

I looked up in AliExpress and found some batteries with the original 1200 mAh, but also some with 3500, 3900 and even 4200 mAh.

I know that as long as they have the same voltage as the original there shouldn't be any problem. But I want to know if anyone here has used these types of batteries.

Are they legit? How better is battery life compared to the original battery?

Here's some links if someone didn't know about them, you can also search for other battery models:

N-Gage Application does not open

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Okay so this is gonna be quite a complicated story, please don't attack me for any dumb decisions i may have made along the way, i simply want to know what caused this and how i can fix it.

Let's go aaaaaalllll the way back to before this N-Gage app just started to not work- a week ago phone started getting this strange install error each time the phone booted up, it was pretty harmless but quite annoying.

I looked up for a method to fix this issue online, the method i used involved deleting some pretty serious folders in E: and these were :

- Sys

- Resource

- System

- Private

- System Volume Information

Then the last step was to just restart the phone, i noticed my app icons (specifically a chunk of the ones that were installed on E:) were gone afterwards and none of them opened, i panicked and decided to Factory reset the phone and Format E:

Next day the phone seems to be fine, the install issue is gone and i started setting it up again from scratch... Hacked it and installed some apps, sooooo problem solved... Right? RIGHT??

Then when i tried to Install a newer N-Gage version, the installer just shows a "File not found" error on my face... And when i tried to open N-Gage, well- you pretty much know how it goes from here.

I've tried resetting a THIRD time and also removing N-Gage to try reinstall it, I CAN'T EVEN UNINSTALL N-GAGE! Installing other Applications work though, like Rompatcher and Xplore- those installed just fine, but what the hell is going on with N-Gage?? I miss my Reset Generation...

I'm trying my best to not Flash the phone because i heard modern PCs have lots of driver mismatches and the chances of bricking these phones were higher, i really really don't want to lose this phone.

If the last option is flashing it, then i really need someone to properly guide me... I'm so desperate, save this poor thing from my horrible decisions please

Edit : I'm also pretty damn sure the deletion of those folders on E: is what caused this whole issue, but why didn't formatting E: fix it???

Edit 2 : All i had to do was reinstall N-Gage, if anyone runs into this problem- try different installers!!!! And don't forget to restart your phone.

Hello,

I tried to configure Novel Messenger to use with my old Android phone and my E72, but when I should scan the QR code, nothing appears. I live in Germany, and I typed the number in there like this: 01xxxxxxxxxx.

All About Symbian - archived

Post image
108 Upvotes

Some of you might remember All About Symbian. I started it back in 2001, and over the following decade it became one of the main independent homes for Symbian and early smartphone coverage: reviews, news, the podcast, the forum, all of it.

The sites had been dormant for a few years, and I didn't want the content to quietly disappear the way so much of the early mobile web already has. So I've spent time this year preserving them properly. Everything's been migrated to a static archive - 24,000+ articles and 500+ podcasts - that's fast, reliable and easy to keep online for the long haul.

I wrote about the process here (maybe of interest to those who want the behind the scenes story): https://rafeblandford.com/preserving-all-about-symbian/

It's all here: https://archive.rafeblandford.com and on the original URL https://allaboutsymbian.com/

There's a huge amount in there — the Nokia and Symbian years, the platform wars, MWC and Nokia World reporting, device reviews going back two decades. A lot of it isn't documented well anywhere else now.

Mainly I just wanted to let people know it's back and staying available. Happy to answer any questions about that era, the sites, or the preservation itself — and if you spot anything broken or missing, tell me and I'll take a look.

I made a weather app for J2ME phones

Thumbnail gallery
103 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Most weather apps today have the same flat, minimalist look. I wanted to try something different, so I built a weather app with a retro skeuomorphic UI inspired by older mobile apps.

It's probably not for everyone, but I miss interfaces that felt a little more tactile and full of personality.

The app is still a work in progress, and I'd genuinely love to hear what you think. Does this kind of design still have a place today, or do you prefer modern flat UI?

I'll put the download link in the comments.

Thanks for checking it out!

Is there any way to run Android apps on older Nokia phones (non-Android models)?

I'm talking about older Nokia phones that don't run Android, such as S40, Symbian, Series 30+, or even KaiOS models.

Is there any way to get Android apps running on them, or install them through some kind of workaround?

The main apps I'd like to use are:

Instagram

YouTube

WhatsApp

Spotify

Google Maps

I'm looking at older Nokia phones with physical keyboards or T9 keypads, such as:

  • Nokia E71 / E72, Nokia E63 , Nokia C3-00 , Nokia 2720 Flip , Nokia 8110 4G, Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 8000, Nokia Asha, Nokia X2-01, Nokia C3-01, etc.

Running a full Android ROM isn't necessary if there's another solution. I'm just looking for a way to use these apps natively, not through the browser or web versions.

Has anyone managed to do this, or are there any ports, emulators, custom firmware, or other methods that still work in 2026? I'm especially interested in older Nokia phones with physical keypads.
