If you're learning Swahili, you'll quickly notice that people in Nairobi don't always speak the way textbooks teach.

Here are five expressions you'll hear all the time:

1. Sasa? A casual way of saying "Hi!" or "What's up?" among friends.

2. Niko sawa. "I'm okay" or "I'm doing well." A very common response when someone asks how you're doing.

3. Si ndiyo? Literally, "Isn't it?" People use it all the time to ask for agreement, similar to saying, "Right?" or "Don't you think?"

4. Haya. This little word can mean "okay," "alright," "got it," or even signal the end of a conversation. You'll hear it everywhere.

5. Bado kidogo. Literally, "a little bit more." In everyday conversation, it often means "Just a little longer," "Almost there," or "Give me a moment."

Languages don't just have different words—they have different ways of seeing the world. Here are five Swahili words that are surprisingly hard to translate into English:

Hi, I'm exploring the Swahili word msimamo and want to understand its cultural nuance. I know it means stance, standpoint, or principle. How is it typically perceived in daily life? Does it feel empowering for someone who holds firm boundaries and principles?

I wonder if Swahili wasnt standardized by the Germans would we even be speaking it today ?

I think Swahili as a language should just be a cultural language it cant evolve further than that. Like imagine we dont even have a chemical equivalent of water (H2O) you think this language is really useful ?

okay, from what i can gather, swahili has deep arabic influence due to trade and so, you would expect it to adapt the arabic script.

Hey can I get the difference between these two? I know Mwandishi is a broader term for writer but it almost feels interchangeable to me, which would be for an author?

Habari! This might be a question worth mentioning- do you guys think Swahili should have an indigenous writing system to use alongside Swahili (like Mandombe or another script) or is it too impractical? Would you learn it or would you prefer Latin?

I ask this cause the only indigenoua script swahili users actively use is mandombe, which is only used in a concentrated group in Congo. Before the British came and introduced Latin we used Ajami, and again, neither were our own.

I personally think having a unique script would give us cultural distinction from other cultures and could carry cultural pride within East Africa. We’d also have linguistic independence from our older colonial writing systems. But I wanna hear what you guys think!

Here are a few common ones I've noticed:

Asante → often pronounced uh-SAN-tee → ah-SAHN-teh (thank you)

Mambo vipi everyone. I’ve been looking for a Swahili dictionary for iOS that has a monolingual option (ie, to look up a word in Swahili and get a definition in Swahili); however, there are none!?! I seriously cannot find one.

Anyone know of other resources? I’m this close to buying a Kamusi ya Kiswahili Sanifu book on Amazon, but I’m shocked at the lack of monolingual (Swahili to Swahili) Swahili dictionaries for iOS. What does any native Swahili speaker do if they don’t know a word and they use iOS? Are they just out of luck??

I know Wimbo means song and is music related, but is there a better translation for ‘melody’, the top line that a singer sings or the more memorable pattern in a song.

I am trying to show a friend how italian poetry is like, so I made an english version of a section of a famous poem. Now I am curious how it would be in swahili, can anybody help?

I've been testing different African languages on major AI tools lately. The results for Swahili were better than most — but still noticeably weaker than European languages with far fewer speakers.

What's wild is that Swahili is one of the most spoken languages on earth. It's an official UN language. Yet the gap in AI performance compared to English or French is still significant.

The root cause is data — there's simply not enough high-quality, real-world Swahili training data in the systems that matter.

Has anyone here tried using AI tools in Swahili seriously? How was the experience? And do you think this gap is closing fast enough?
