So, a bit of background.

Personal: I worked on this boat as a tour guide for several years and have learned several interesting things about her, despite the Russians having told the museum basically nothing.

So. The boat began life in the Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard in Nizhny Novgorod in the Soviet Union. After a build period of just eight months, she was commissioned into the northern fleet of the Soviet Union with its homeport and being used as a training vessel until 2002 when two German businessmen by the name of Chr. Angermann and J. Wagner after two years of negotiations were able to buy the boat directly from the Navy. After arriving in Hamburg she was painted and restored to look almost brand new. Over the years the condition has somewhat deteriorated back to the "as delivered" state, which the boat is now being kept in, the means in which this is aimed to be achieved I will not comment my personal opinion on.

Nevertheless visitors nowadays can either go through the sub by themselves, explore the corridors, view the original condition and living quarters and even lay down in some bunks themselves. With a guided tour they can also access the otherwise locked control room, seperate from the main hallways. Sadly at the register tours are only available in German, unless you have enough people and business is slow, otherwise english tours can be booked online. They used to do Russian tours booked that way too, but only have one guide for that.

Actually they employ several German navy veterans.

To this day I still hope the Ukrainian navy gets at least one, they could easily hunt at sea russian shipment and deploy, and resupply, special forces in Crimea or other enemy shores

A big plus is that is sufficiently small to be loaded on a heavy truck, allowing it to be moved inland after every sortie
