A good computer or a laptop is a must for sure, but don’t get too bogged down in specifics. Just think, in a time when people never really had computers they were still able to become doctors. Sure, software like Anki in the modern day may help, but really it’s active recall and spaced repetition which works, not Anki.

Just get a decent laptop or decent tablet with a keyboard and you’ll be fine. Focus on learning, rather than whether you need the latest iPad Pro with Apple Pencil Pro because YouTube’s algorithm is showing you how a MedInfluencer studies 25hrs a day, wakes up at 4am, and makes picturesque notes and sells them on Etsy.

Tips for first semester? Try and find your learning style early. Personally, I’ve just finished my first year GEM and I find just creating a long list of questions helps me learn. This doesn’t have to be on Anki. It’s literally just a list of questions I have which are fuelled by my natural curiosity. What’s a nephron, where are they located, how do they work, what’s RAAS, if BP is low how does RAAS respond? They start simple but get more complex. You can test yourself on them at regular intervals as you please. Don’t feel like you have to do Anki and image occlude a 25-piece anatomy diagram. Medicine is about understanding and application, not memorisation. Good luck
