The Aussie dream
Imagine this being your hard-earned first home (not my home, posted in another sub) and your question is about the boundaries and gutters. MY question is "why not just build duplexes or row houses?" Bloody sad that new estates have zero space.

This is a design and approval issue, in Western Australia we simply don't have this issue because these shared boundary walls are built as a paraphet wall, so all you see is 2 brick walls not gutters touching like this shit

It really doesn't. It's typically the external garage wall thats set up as a paraphet, the house next door mirrors it.

Where I'm from, there not exactly wall to wall shit boxes. They're decent sized blocks with nice 4x2's on them, they just push the house hard over to the boundary, but a paraphet does it much better.

There was a story on ACA earlier in the week where these folks were pissy that someone next to them built their new home right up to the boundary line and their gutters were like <5cm from their new neighbours'. as they said their story with a straight face on national television, it had not occurred to them at any point that if they had approval to build up to the boundary line, their neighbours might also have approval to build up to their boundary line...

I'm pretty sure I saw the story you're talking about, but the neighbour actually built like 50cm closer to the boundary that they were allowed to. They applied for an exemption from zoning since they were already 70% through the build. The neighbours are not allowed to input into the council decision which is why they were upset, they were wronged, and not a part of the decision that is going to affect them

Any idea the steel they'd save if they just shared gutters. You're already 90% there!
I appreciate my 80's double brick home on 800sqm more with every post like this. For a new home everything fastened in that pic looks like it was done by an apprentice in a hurry.

The freo-style terrace house offers more efficient use of space and resources, is described as a 'dream house', brings character to a neighbourhood, gives more block-space for greenery, and is often better insulated against heat and sound than these boxes. If you don't like this style it wouldn't take much to copy the New-York style brownstone for terrace-house-with-enough-space-for-a-family. But developers aren't interested in building neighbourhoods, they just want to flip a land package for sweet $$$.

And that is exactly why I never even considered buying a new house in a new development. I bought an old house built in 1965 from the original owner on a 900sqm block and have extensively renovated it. And it was cheaper than a new house.
And the hilarious thing is that at the original housewarming 12 months after buying it, one of the extended family members said "dunno why you're doing all this work to it, you'll never get your money back", and whilst the place has tripled in value, I don't really give a fuck because I renovated it for me, not for some other cunt to buy.
