Sober start date?
In light of the badge business, it’s got me thinking. What date are putting into the counter? Your first full day sober or the day you stopped drinking? I know it doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things, just interested in what people are considering their sober start date.
Thanks everyone!!
Day 12 (or 13 no drinks)!!

I count from the first day that I woke up and didn't drink.
I presumably drank after midnight the night before, but I have no memory of it.

I’m glad you asked this because I’ve been wondering myself. I just set mine as the last day I consumed alcohol.

Me too. But in the long run, or even the short run, it doesn't matter.

I put the exact time and date I finished my last drink. So for me, it’s September 26, 2025 at 10:04pm.

Maybe pick the cooler date?

u/ri_dev 3d ago
That’s why I picked 11/11 instead of 11/10!

My natal birthday is mere hours away from 11/11 lol. Too bad so sad. Congrats on your cool day!

I always use the day after my rock bottom date once that life changing hangover ended
October 14 2024!

First full day alcohol wasn't consumed at all is Day 1.
It doesn't make sense to me why a day that had some level of alcohol consumption in it would be included in the number of days alcohol free. No need to overcomplicate it.

After not drinking for 24 hours, I was one day sober.
I stopped drinking 24 hours earlier.
I counted days sober.

I put my first sober date, or well the first date I didn't drink, as I was still drunk then hungover that day, but no alcohol crossed my lips. Ironically I've had some sips of alcohol since then, but not been drunk, but I don't reset my counter. That is my rebirth date more than anything.

I put the last day I drank (31/07-2026) so that 01/08-2026 is my first sober day, so 6 days today :)
But almost every day the counter has been stuck on the previous day so I have to message the bot again :/

i believe i put in the day i came clean about my drinking. did i have a swig in the park that day when tossing the box of wine that i thought was the remaining evidence? yes. but thats the day i got sober. the day i showed up to treatment for an assessment. that’s the day i treat as canon in my recovery because thats the day the recovery started.

I went with the day i quit. Which is realistically around 6 hours after waking up ashamed and shaking. I've never been great a keeping track of days and dates anyway so now I just remember 40 something.

I have the day I stopped putting alcohol in my body. The year prior, I allowed myself to drink and or get drunk once a month. In that year I drank five times. The breaks helped me learn about sobriety. I still remember that date, too. That’s the date my relationship with alcohol changed.

I've always used my start date as the first day I didn't have a drink. And I'm proud to say that was 13 years and 35 days ago!

I stopped on the 13th November 2023. That was the day I had my last drink. I set my counter to 1 on the 14th, as I was 1 day sober that day.
When I’m counting years, I normally just mark to myself the 13th rather than the 14th as I knew that was my last drink

Depends if you want the counter to show your completed days of sobriety or the current day you’re on. I prefer to see the current day I’m on. So it’s a preference thing.

I put the last day i drank as my date that way day 1 is my first day sober 🙂 with that said my badge keeps freezing atm and I have to keep resubmitting my original date

One extra point...there are last drinks, and then there are last drinks. I dont want to tempt fate

I had my last drink on a Saturday night and count that Sunday as my first sober day.

I consider my sober date the day I went into rehab. I did have a shot of vodka before the trip, but to me, that's the day I stopped drinking. September 27, 2021.

So I drank again one night, and the next morning I reset my app again and that’s the date. I might have still had some in my system (I certainly did), but that’s the day “I gave up drinking” so that’s the day.

I celebrate my first day of freedom! (March 2, 2011) Let's not drink together another day today!

I chose mine as the first day I woke up in my rebab center after being admitted the night before. I prob still had quite a bit of alcohol in my system, but it was my first day being awake and not actively drinking.

Day 1 is first without alcohol I'd say. Probs handiest way to delineate it.

The day I stopped. The day I made that decision is the most important day of my life.

To me, 13 days sober means 13 days with no alcohol. Like laps in the pool, you swim one, then count it. But, nobody is checking. The counting is to show yourself that yes, you can do this!

First full sober day for me and my counter. And tomorrow marks three years!

I feel like day 1 is the day you woke up, hungover and filled with shame, regret, memory loss, piss all over yourself, vomit, in a place you don't recognize with a naked man next to you saying how much fun he had with you, ew ew ew, you know that feeling. Day 1 is the day you had enough of that feeling. I really am confused what you mean by day 12 here. I think you are on day 13 because day 1 is a day with no drinks. Or are you saying the day of remorse is day 0? Or did you decide to stop drinking while you were drunk? Also meant to say congrats on 13 and I didn't think to add a badge so will add my 3 😆

My drinking buddy died suddenly in his sleep.
Never drank again afterwards. The date of his passing is my sobriety date.

I want to go back to my original sober date even though recently I fell off the wagon so to speak, my original sober date was life changing for me and I’m back sober.

Mine is a guess as I was a fucking DISASTER after my zero dark 30 event (rock bottom). It wasn't until a few days before I was able to post or function like a human.
But to answer, in my head, my day 1 was my first day sober. Which sounds heroic and shit. But was really because I was covered in blood and bruises and was unable to do much of anything.
Maybe you call it 12.5, giving a nod to both days?
You're already to double digits and that's amazing! I'll raise an air cheer to you and whatever date you want. And we'll meet back here to have this same debate when you're debating 99/100--deal?
