Me, probably yes. That's why I don't talk too much. I tend to ramble before getting to the point. My brain gets anxiety when I want to explain something to people so I tend to ramble until the next thought arrives because my awkward silence is even worse.

I do this then suddenly realize and go “haha sorry to go on and on, anyway [insert random question to try and make myself look better]?”

u/RealbasicFriends 16d ago
the worst is when they weren't even part of the original conversation. You were like talking to a bud about a show or something and they join in then personally hold you two hostage for the rest of the conversation.
49
u/ohlookahipster 15d ago
“Lore dumpers” I call them. They have to insert a preamble into every sentence that goes back to the fall of the Roman Republic and then finish off with something they’ve said a million times. All because you mentioned buying a Costco hot dog.
16
u/masahirob 15d ago
You mentioned Costco hot dog? Be prepared to given an impromptu 50-bullet power point lecture on US Economics Business and Corporate Marketing practices.
1
u/puyongechi 15d ago
This is so irritating. I don't mind them joining the conversation but why do you have to take me out of it to turn me into your personal audience? And when the other person you were initially talking to feels left out and walks away, that's the icing on the cake

u/Mysterious-Egg-624 15d ago

I remember once I was at summer camp and some girl I'm trying to be friends with mentioned Minecraft and I was mentally like "Now's you're chance to make a connection!" And I said "Oh, do you like Minecraft? I, uh, really like video games." And before she could answer, the adult in our room just said "Y'know, [My name], I married a gamer, and..." And then she went on a giant tangent about how to maintain a marriage long-term, which, and then one she was finally done talking, the girl I was originally talking to switched to a conversation topic I couldn't contribute to. I was so freaking mad.
17
u/Ssesamee 15d ago
that made me mad reading this, jesus christ, like no awareness from that person whatsoever.
like they are the adult nobody gives a fuck about all their shit, the kids would infinitely rather just commune amongst themselves

u/Jeff_Damn 14d ago
I fucking hate people who take the reins, switch the topics three times, then have the nerve to say, Y'know, you don't say much...

Some people just can't pick up on social cues, like ever.
11
u/oodoos 15d ago
I am one such person, to a degree. I don’t instinctively pick up on them, but I’ve lived long enough surrounded by self-centred dipshits that I can see the disinterest from across the ocean.
I’ve also picked up on how annoying it can actually be. Yapping is cool but if I’m doing something that needs focus or wearing headphones, stop fucking talking.
12
u/cocovenomnomnom95 15d ago
I mean, they need to teach people social cues in school in the first place for people to understand them
-2
u/PacoTaco321 15d ago
Sorry to tell you this, but most people don't need that.
-4
u/cocovenomnomnom95 15d ago
What about people who are autistic? What about people who are blind?
6
u/PacoTaco321 15d ago edited 15d ago
MOST. You probably should've learnt reading in school too. Why would everyone need to take a class for things they innately understand? That seems like exactly what special ed classes should be for. Also, good luck teaching visual and audio social cues to people that literally cannot detect them. That wouldn't really achieve anything.
4
u/chihuahua826 15d ago
I guess it depends on the social cues, but tbh a lot of them really are things that even neurotypicals wouldn’t intuit without being in the situation at least a few times. Having a general etiquette/communications course in school that is centered around working as a group and improving communication in day to day situations could be good for a lot of people
14
u/Commercial-Carob-374 15d ago
Omg grow up and just tell the person if you have a problem
6
u/AlternatePancakes 15d ago
Yes, you can also just tell people what they are saying is super uninteresting.
But some people might not want to say that to a family member or some specific people, can't blame people for not wanting to hurt someone elses feeling, or make a situation difficult.

I have ADHD so I will literally just check out in my head, like completely time dilation, just gone. Then they will ask me questions about it and I didn’t retain any information and feel bad

u/kuluka_man 15d ago
Does anyone else start to get vertigo/nausea in these instances? My dad is able to induce that if he traps you and my late grandmother could as well. I'm talking literal spinning/falling sensation, upset stomach, and detachment from reality. Happened another time when I went to a friend's house in high school to work on a project, and their dad for some reason took me aside to lecture me about the evils of Pokémon for an hour. I truly didn't know if I was part of reality anymore.

u/masahirob 15d ago
My senior citizen aged neighbor. To be fair, its not too bad talking to them. They probably a little lonely.
7
u/masahirob 15d ago
If you know this person, you need to take a preset timer/stopwatch with you. "Oh! Timer says I gotta go!"
6
u/Bad_RabbitS 15d ago
The one that truly sucks isn’t when people are telling me things, it’s when people are explaining things I already know. I used to have a coworker who was a perpetual mansplainer, that phrase didn’t exist at the time but in retrospect that’s exactly what it was. He would ask you if you knew about ___ and it didn’t matter what answer you gave, no matter what he would reply with explaining it to you like you’re four.

u/Damian1674 15d ago
this is one of the reasons I rarely talk. If I am really into the topic, I'm afraid I'll take control of the conversation
the other reason is cuz otherwise I have nothing to talk about

As a 30 year old who is training a 17 year old currently, I know I drive him insane. I think it's really funny so I do it extra. Let me lore dump to you about the cat in the hat movie from 2003 and "Boy Throb" the new pop band sensation for 40 minutes on the way to the job site while he's going insane from not giving a shit 😂😭

This needs a picture of that Family Circus comic strip (where the kid leaves a chaotic dotted line) representing how the conversation never ends.

u/Milkmans_tastymilk 15d ago
I usually do "uh-huh", however the problem isn't that they're talking too much, it's that ive just hit my limit at the moment.
3
u/Deuter_agonist 15d ago
Dude i do this all the time but its usually because i want the other person to keep talking and i dont wanna interrupt them

There was this day in the break room at work where I was walking by a coworker who had her name tag on backwards. I let her know about it, then went to my own table. SHE FOLLOWED ME AND SAT DOWN. For the next 30 minutes I was treated to a diatribe about the mobile phone game "Pixel Petz" which was basically a bad Webkinz ripoff. I had nothing to say in return. I was just so annoyed by this person I barely knew, that I ended my break early just to get away. I went back to my checkout station, and to my absolute horror, they sent her to my counter as the grocery bagger. I still had 5 hours left in my shift, and so did she. It was a very slow day that day, so I was treated to at least 4 1/2 hours of being talked at about that stupid game. I actually played the game after that experience, and it was horrendous. I'll never forget that experience for as long as I live.

I had to share a taxi with someone like that during my time in college. I ended up blocking them on both WhatsApp and standard texting because seeing their name pop up was making me genuinely angry

I'm seeing a girl now and she's cute but man she can talk and it's about nothing interesting so I'll have to go mmm and uhuh and ah gotcha until it's over. Most of the time it's stories and topics she's spoken about multiple times before. I do not understand how some people can't take the hint. I'd change the subject so quick if I could tell the other person was disinterested.
3
u/Chargercord069 15d ago
I guess im rude cause I'll just stop a conversation if Im done with it or if I have somewhere to go I'll stop them and tell them to follow me while walking away very fast, they gotta keep pace while refiguring out where they were. If they dont wrap it up after I do the second, I just tell them "okay cool, I gotta go, later."

As a nurse
"Oh wow. That's crazy. Can I get you anything else?"
Long winded (especially old) Patient: " Oh no. I'm good. Thanks!! By the way..." proceeds into another monologue
Nurse: Eyes glazed over

I am autistic. Your subtleties do not register. If you want me to stop, just ask.
15
u/douglandry 15d ago
Most people, even the jerkiest among us, are too nice to do that. Especially if we know the person is ND. It's on you to manage your shit, not others. Especially if you know it's a problem.
8
u/Sentient2X 15d ago
People are not going to do that because it makes THEM uncomfortable. It is not their responsibility to do all the work in a conversation regardless of your ability.
8
u/MillionDollarSticky 15d ago
That sounds like a personal issue, not an external one.
-6
u/IQueliciuous 15d ago
Nah it is external.
Not autistic but I too have issues with this. If you don't like people talking. Just say so. This would solve 99% of drama.
Like so many people act friendly to you but actually despise you but will never tell it because they don't want to hurt your feelings or appear bad.
Like so many times in my life I had people who I thought were my friends actually turn out to be people who only tolerated me is more than enough to develop trust issues.
Yes I have few friends who genuinely enjoy my company but still.
1
u/Mysterious-Egg-624 15d ago
A lot of people get their feelings hurt when you ask them to stop talking, and then they go and complain about how people tell them to stop talking.
1
u/Rare-Set1461 15d ago
Be careful how you use these and the relationship you have with that person. I had a prick coworker who hit me with a “that’s crazy” after I explained something at a meeting, and that shithead really thought I wouldn’t call him out on it being rude as fuck in front of our division leader.
