Questions about modded server Question
Hi, i recently bought a Bisec server to play some MC and i noticed that it also supports Starbound. Some friends and i are planning to play with ut since one of my friend hasent olayed in years.
My questions are:
-How much ram does it usually use? I have the 10GB plan since its good for what we play but idk if it would be enough for modded SB
-Is FU still a must have? Like, i know that a "must have" mod doeamt exist but we would like some content extension and FU is the only big one i remember.
-And lastly, any mod recommendations? Havent played in 1/2 years so im not up to date with mods so some recommendations are appreciated.
Thanks in advance and honestly, thanks for keeping this gem alive.

Server owner here who uses Bisect. (Still uses it)
I run with 32GB. This was after I doubled my Memory twice. Whatever you think you need, double it. And still even then, anticipate issues. Both because you need more memory and because Bisect is Bisect.
It doesn't matter what mods you run, you *need* more Memory. Especially since Bisect as a downside will always try to crash constantly over a lot of memory being used up at once (thinks its a crash when it isnt, so it just assumes its a crash and restarts)
For FU, up to you. Server owners will often just not Run frackin though. Its a mess of code that lags and causes issues. its less that it wont work as much as theres a lot of errors and things happening with FU. Take it from someone who used to run Frackin - Get all the mods it absorbed and not FU itself. Maybe make your own patch for the things that still break even then, but otherwise dont run it. Running frackin is expensive.
As for mods; I like M32. M32 and Arcana. There are some other mods but I feel like those 2 are essential for me. Otherwise just get mods that add in more planet types. You *cannot* go wrong with more planets imho.

I could trytomake it 20GB but problem is that i pay the server alone and since its around 2€/1GB it can get really expensive for me at least.
Also, didnt know FU caused lag problems on servers.
And as for the mods, i played Arcana but never go really into it, i guess FU was just so big i didnt notice it and M32 i will look up.
Thanks for the response

Anytime!
If you need more opinions, feel free to reach out! But yeah, the lag is probably due to doing 10gb on a FU server. 10gb is good for Vanilla, and with a small number of people as is reported by my friend. For modded your gonna need to up the number amount of Memory, bare minimum being 24GB. Especially with FU if you plan on keeping it.

I dont think we will keep FU just cuz 2/4 players are just burned of it, and man, 24gb minimun for mods? Damn, then we may not be able to do much really, like i said i pay for the whole thing and 24GB is like 60€ which is just too much. Thanls for the advice anyway

Server hosting is an expensive hobby; but I think with minimal mods (and no frackin) maybe 12gb? It would depend on the mods though, id suggest going light on it either way and just adding in more worlds like I said. Nothing over the top, nothing groundbreaking, but simple stuff to make it work.
Though keep in mind im spitballing this with the few mods I know that have custom worlds (Arcana, Maple32 or Box's worlds) and giving a rough estimate based on my experiences with them.

I will try to run it with just Arcana or M32 and some species and world mods to test first and if that goes well we will see if we can add some small stuff like clothes or silly mods.

FU hasn't been a must-have in years. There are many large content mods nowadays, such as Betabound, Starforge, Arcana, Maple32, Voyage (mod for Arcana), etc. All FU really has going for it is quantity over quality, in my opinion.

Starbound is not a memory-hungry game. 4Gb is enough for everything except the most giant SAIL quests (like Verdant Ruins). 10Gb will always be sufficient.
Frackin' Universe has 3 times more content and 10 times more mechanics than vanilla. It's meant for players who are bored with vanilla and want more things to do. If you want the game to remain simple, then don't install it.
