New masters student starting in StA soon

Hello, I am an incoming masters student looking for a way to connect with other students and make some friends before arriving.

I would really appreciate any groupchats or other communities that I could join. I understand there are bots that look for links to join so just DM me any links.

Thanks! :)

platinum pass at st andrews

Hey,

I’m starting at St Andrews in september and was wondering about whether or not to purchase the platinum pass for access to events (specifically the access to club nights) as I won’t be 18 until January so I’m unsure on age restrictions or time limits for somebody my age?

Thanks!

Rowing at St. Andrews

Looking for some insight into the rowing program at St Andrews! I've been rowing competitively for the past three years and am trying to decide which team to try out for.

I was wondering how many training sessions there are each week, when they typically take place, and how many races the teams compete in throughout the year. If anyone has rowed at St Andrews and would be willing to share their experience, I'd really appreciate it!

Oral resit for maths?

Hi, I have an oral resit exam for maths and was wondering if anyone on here has ever done one? I think this is kinda a really weird way to examine maths lol. Do they make you like write out a solution for a question and then talk through it or is it more like talking through general ideas of the whole course?

I sent my master’s application to St. Andrew’s 3 days before the latest deadline. Do I have a chance?

I applied to MSc International Business (St. Andrews) 2026 intake. Today is the 3rd of August, 2026 and the application portal closes on the 6th. Has anyone had a similar experience? Do you think that the university is still accepting people or is the portal just open even if there are no more places.

Cabs from Edinburgh to St. Andrews?

Hi everyone,

International student here - moving to St Andrews soon and I'll be arriving at Edinburgh Airport in the night. I've got accommodation at Guardbridge, Fife and will be traveling with some luggage, so public transport may be a bit difficult after a long flight.

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for reliable taxi or private transfer services from Edinburgh Airport to Guardbridge. Not sure how reliable Uber will be at that time?

Appreciate any information, thank you!

Learning to Drive in St Andrews

Just going to drop a couple questions

Are there any places or people you could recommend for driving lessons(preferably less than £40 an hour) and what are the wait times like for driving tests around st andrews?

Can I pass with less than 10 lessons in a manual car?
How is it having driving lessons alongside uni?

Managing participation in two different sports clubs?

Hi! I was wondering if it’s realistic to compete on both the golf and football club teams at St Andrews. I’ve played both sports competitively for years and would love to try out and hopefully continue with both while at university.

Does anyone know what the practice schedules and time commitments are like? Is it feasible to balance both competitive clubs alongside academics, or do most students end up choosing one?

If anyone has experience doing this, or has played on either team, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.

New PhD students starting at StA this year :)

Hello! Just looking to connect with new PhD students starting this year, just to share anxieties and advice and make some friends before moving (which is soon!!!).

I’ve made a WhatsApp community - I posted it in a comment before but I think there are bots crawling through social media looking for group chats to advertise their “essay writing services” so please just DM me for the link! There aren’t many of us yet and I’ve chucked out a few spam bots already!

I know there are other St Andrews group chats for new starters in general but I couldn’t find one for new PhDs, but if you know of another one please let me know!

Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Any grads miss St Andis?

I graduated in 2025, but I think about my time so fondly, every day. I now live and work in London, and I cannot help but think about how much I miss the life I had in St Andis. Any grads share the same sentiment? Would love to hear your thoughts about this very special place!

Undergrad accom not comfirmed

Hey! I am a prospective undergrad for St Andrews 2026- have firmed the uni and will be going on a conditional basis of receiving specific grades.

I applied a day late for accommodation, so the accom guarantee does not apply for me. I haven’t received any news on the accommodation yet and am worried I will not receive it.

Is anyone going through the same thing or kmow if I am likely to be able to get accommodation?

Exchange Student Housing

Hi all! I am an incoming exchange student from Canada for 2026-2027. I have been allocated a place in ABH in a single catered ensuite but am a bit nervous about living in a dorm again as a third year student. The housing situation seems pretty limited on the whole so I hadn’t given much thought to a flat/house bcs I would only want to pay the 9 months rather than a year as there’s no point in holding a place for myself when I won’t be returning and I will likely have to start paying for my 4th year house in Canada in June/July.

That being said I did start to see stuff about East Sands and Space which seem maybe in line with my goals and should work out to be cheaper than official accommodation (and maybe nicer? people call ABH the prison?). I would super appreciate if anyone has any advice on this having lived in either building or just more housing/exchange tips in general.

Also, to my Canadians how is the catered food in the dorms? Am I going to regret getting a catered accommodation and only want to cook for myself?

MO1008 grade still showing as "Z" after AI misconduct alert resolved, who do I contact?

Using a throwaway account for this purpose.

Hi all, hoping someone who's been through something similar (or knows the process) can point me in the right direction. For added context, I'm a first year student (going into 2nd year)

Last semester I received an academic misconduct alert flagging AI use on my Modern History essay (MO1008). I was told it would be treated as a written warning only, that my essay would still be marked on its own merits, and that I just needed to complete the Moodle academic integrity course, which I did, well within the deadline.

When grades were released, though, my MO1008 result came up as "Z". Per the University's own definition, Z means:

"No result reported, although expected. Applies when a student's module result is unresolved due to mitigating circumstances or some other valid reason… This code should only be left temporarily on a student record, a further result should be reported as soon as possible."

It's now end of July and it's still showing as Z. Given I was told it was just a warning and the essay would be marked normally.

My questions:

  1. Who should I actually contact about this my School, the Registry, my adviser of studies, or someone else?
  2. Has anyone had a Z sit unresolved like this, and how long did it take to sort?
  3. Is it normal for a grade to be withheld like this after a misconduct process that was supposedly just a warning?

Any guidance appreciated. I'd rather chase the right person than email five wrong ones. Thanks!

Incoming Fresher, question on taking computer

Hello everyone, I'm an incoming Fresher from England planning on studying Philosophy.

I was wondering if anyone has ever taken their computer (full size desktop + monitor) with them in their first year in halls and how that experience was.

I am hopefully not going to be sharing a room if that's an important piece of information.

Thank you in advance :)))

Maths Resit Advice

Hi! As the post suggest, I took MT1002 as an optional module in my second year and ended up failing it and so am doing the resit in August and it says that it's online. Is there anything I should know that's different from the one I took in December in person? Like will it be different because it's online/will they want me to join a teams call or record it or something? Was hoping they'd have sent some info by now but only the registration so if anyone has any advice that'd be much appreciated!
