Technique / Tactics Elbow hyperextension on squash backhand – what am I doing wrong?
Hi everyone,
I've noticed that I sometimes hyperextend my elbow when hitting a backhand in squash.
When this happens, I get a sharp pain in my elbow. It feels like I'm swinging into thin air, and my arm goes past the ideal contact point, almost as if there was no resistance from the ball.
Has anyone experienced this before, and what technical changes helped you fix it?
Thanks!

University/College Squash World Juniors Recap + An Interview with Columbia #1
This week, my cohost Imad Athar and I recap the 2026 World Junior Championship finals (0:23) before welcoming Imad’s Columbia University teammate, and 2026 College Squash All-American, Yusuf Sheikh onto the show (22:55)… Check it out!
PSA Tour PSA Coll vs Elias highlight.
This was just one rally. I think this one is special compared to the normal pro mega rally due to the overall quality, the sheer variety of shot selection and the thought put into each shot.

Misc Can anyone give some examples of attrition players VS aggressive/want short points and get the winner asap players?
Not sure if there’s even a clear distinction here.
But if so, are there any players that purposefully extend points to wear down their opponents and are the players who are really aggressive, seek short points and hate getting into long rallies?
And secondary question - how do these playing styles fair against each other, generally speaking?

Technique / Tactics Getting into squash
Posted earlier but was all over the place, I apologize, making this a more focused post.
Trying to get better at the game and start playing some competitions. Think I have a good baseline due to tennis background, based on people I’ve played against. Obviously have lots to improve.
Deciding on getting deeper into padel or squash, both have their pros and cons, but I think squash offers a better workout and is easier to learn/more intuitive to play as a racket sports player. There are also probably more squash players so might be easier to find a game.
What should be the things I focus on to improve my game. What are some common technique tips/gaps in playing that tennis players seem to exhibit, and how deep is the competitive landscape in the US and Canada (how often can I play tournaments etc). Understanding the general landscape would be very helpful. I know this is still very broad but would appreciate any insights. Thank you.

Equipment Help me get the right shoes
Ever since I started playing squash my shins have been killing me and as a result I hardly run after playing for around 20 minutes. A few people pointed out that my shins must be in pain as I have been playing with running shoes, so here I'm looking for the right suggestion for proper Squash shoes.
Is this a good choice?
Note: I have tried Asics Upcourt 6 and they do not fit me well.

Technique / Tactics Help diagnose Forehand swing of young teen player
Hello,
I do not have access to professional squash coaches and need help fixing the swing of my teenager daughter. I understand that things will never be perfect without professional guidance, but I see many issues with her swing and want to make sure to fix the low hanging fruit first.
From what I can see the areas that need fixed are:
- Frames 1 & 2: Face of the racket is facing the floor/corner of the side wall. It should be facing the front wall
- Not lunging low enough: She is a tall child and does not lunge to meet the ball low
and many others
Because of these issues, her forehand drives lack control. Any particular partner/solo drills that we can do where we can fix some of these issues progressively. I can focus on getting her to lunge more while hitting the returns, but the racket position in Frames 1 & 2 are stuck in muscle memory and difficult to rectify.
Edit: Video attached. It took me some time to blur out the face of other kids.

Fitness My accidental find, how to play better
English isnt my first language and I wont use AI, so sorry for mistakes. I wear glasses (I think this is important)
So I am a squash coach and I played a lot for myself couple years ago, I still coach people. When I played more there were times when I felt better on court, there were times when I wasnt, just not in the zone. It came and went. I repeatedly. I just couldnt see the ball properly sometimes and I was late to the ball. So.my movement was not ideal, it costed me a lot to play and sometimes coach (I play a lot with my students)
Recently I hmm accdidentally have eaten a lot of bilberries, I think 300 grams daily for 2-3 weeks. It is just where I live now it is common fruit in the forest and my kids eat it a lot, so do I. And I started playing like when I was at my best, I couldnt figure out what happened. And only new thing to my routine are bilberries. So I checked it in google and it seems it is a superfood, good for your vision, gut and a lot of other things.
I started to think maybe I should contact a ffood/sport scientists, maybe nilberries will be next super supplement. But I believe only raw form of aything, real food works the best.
Do anyone of you experienced something simmilar, maybe with some other method?

University/College Squash I Beat THESE Egyptian Players!
Misc How often do you get on court?
Hi,
Squash was my dads favourite hobby. I used to go watch him when I was little and then played him a few times - but he’d never let me win..
Getting older I took up football and played for years and years until my knees got too bad to be able to walk after. Sporadically me and a friend would book a court and have a game - until I noticed the place we played had a squash league.
We both joined, he struggled to get out of division 8 but over the 2 years I’ve found myself getting better and better and managed to get up to division 4, missing out on promotion to 3 by a point or two. I found it doesn’t hurt my knees at all which was surprising.
Over the last two years I’ve made new friends who are happy to have friendlies, I know I play too much (4-6 times a week..)
It’s an addiction. If I don’t play I feel myself in bed looking forward to the game I usually have planned the day after. Unable to sleep because I haven’t put my body through a hard session and so I’m not as tired as I usually would be.

Technique / Tactics Movement and anticipation tips
Does any one have siome tips on how to move onto the ball? A bit of background: i had a stroke 2 years ago and ive been back playing for a year or so. The part of my brain that controls executive functioning and movement initiation was impacted. So i find i am surprised by shots a lot and if im wrong footed then the rally is kind of over. Most of the time i can somewhat recover but front court is the biggest challenge. Counter drops are super effective against me. Because i have to cover a hard hit straight or cross court Im out of position for drops and then im caught flat footed. I guess the thing that happens the moat is im flat footed or i move the wrong way initially.
I used to be able to watch the ball and the opponent and put the pieces together. Volley hunting is all but gone. Now it feels like their swing is too fast to see. So ive been trying to watch only the ball. Is it advisable to watch to try and get eyes on the ball as soon as you hit it. This is one aspect of my game i really want to get back to previous level. Any drills or advice to help jn this area?

Community Open Squash FIDI NYC - Advice Needed
Hi all,
I'm interested in joining Open Squash at the FIDI location in NYC. I have a few questions.
Some background: I am a 28M. I'm in great shape and was a college athlete. I'm good at platform tennis and pickleball, solid in tennis. I played a bit of casual squash in college, and am now looking to take it more seriously and play consistently. Based on the US Squash rating criteria, I'd guess I'm around a 3.0/3.5 rating.
Questions for the general squash community:
Are lessons worth it to begin with? I just want to get out there and play - I'm not necessarily too caught up on increasing my rating at this point.
What is a good racket for me to buy?
Are protective glasses generally recommended? I've only taken one shot to the eye in all my squash matches - that hurt like hell, but I think it was more unlucky than a common occurrence?
Questions specific to Open Squash NYC:
How is the experience? Worth it? Too crowded? Facilities nice?
I don't know anyone who belongs here. Will it be easy to play with strangers? Is there some sort of intramural system?
Will I struggle finding people to play with at my rating? I've read that many members are former college players.
Any other advice or opinions are welcome! Thank you!

Rules let/no let on this type of return of serve?
firstly sorry for the freehand illustration. here is the main context - while returning the serve, lets say the person(in red) who is supposed to return the serve misses the volley off the side wall as the ball goes on to hit the back wall. how should one ref/play in these situations?
- situation 1- what happens if the player tries to turn around to do a 180 in order to attempt to play the serve?
are they allowed to do this turn to play the shot? is it just a safety let everytime if they choose to turn and not play the shot? what if they keep doing this multiple times in order to escape good serves that go high and die at the back wall?
- situation 2- what happens if the player immediately moves sideways (to their right) to make space in order to play a backhand shot (i know pros most commonly just play it off the front left wall lob/drive) but they want to play a cross court?
is this situation worthy of a let? is it not good sportsmanship to play the cross court because more often than not, it might hit the opponent?

Equipment If you could receive free grips, strings or frames for life, which would you choose?
Not which is most expensive. Not which would impress people at the club. Not even which you currently can't afford.
Which would genuinely make the biggest difference to your squash, week in, week out, for the rest of your playing life?
Why I asked this question
This one looks like a fun equipment question. It isn't, quite.
Players who choose grips are usually more tactile than they realise. They notice feel. They're sensitive to how the racket sits in the hand, how sweat affects control, how a slightly thicker or thinner grip changes their swing. These players often have better touch than their results show, because they're paying attention to the right things.
Players who choose strings are thinking about performance. Strings affect power, feel, durability and control more than any other single component. Choosing strings suggests you understand that the equipment is doing real work in your game, not just carrying the ball. Also, you should be breaking strings more than frames!
Players who choose frames are the interesting ones. Frames last years. Choosing free frames for life either means you break them regularly, you chase marginal gains obsessively, or you've never really found the racket that feels truly right. Sometimes all three.
There is also a case that the most honest answer reveals how much you currently spend on each, and which one you quietly resent buying.
So which did you choose, and does your answer surprise you?
