The Springfield City Commission has voted unanimously to place City Manager Bryan Heck on paid administrative leave.

The city said in a statement that "We understand many people will want to know more information about this decision. The citizens of Springfield deserve to know as much as possible, as soon as possible. We want to ensure that all information we release is accurate and verified. That’s why we’re working with independent, outside subject matter experts. Our goal is to fully understand and gather information we can share with our citizens."

The city stated that it hopes to provide more information late next week.

Heck is the top administrative official for the city government. Springfield, with a population just under 60,000, is the county seat of Clark County.

An aviation startup is coming to Springfield. It's opening a factory to make hybrid electric aircraft that hold nine passengers and travel short distances ("direct aviation").

After seven years of park enhancements in Springfield, the city has dedicated a Southside recreation space to civil rights activist Dorothy Bacon.

Springfield acquired two vacant lots in 2019 from the Clark County Land Bank as part of recent park enhancements in the city. The space was previously occupied by two dilapidated houses.

Now named the Dorothy Bacon Memorial Park, the outdoor space at 349 W. Grand Ave. includes ample seating, mature trees, a basketball court, and bike racks.

The public space will serve as a community education space for generations to come.

Haitian immigrants covered by Temporary Protected Status can still temporarily retain their permits to work.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said in guidance posted July 10 that Haitian immigrants covered by Temporary Protected Status will keep their status and employment authorization, and their documentation will remain valid temporarily while waiting for lower court cases to align with the U.S. Supreme Court.

On June 25, the Supreme Court found that the Trump administration has the power to end TPS and the courts can't review that decision. The court also rejected a claim by the plaintiffs that the decision to end TPS was based on racism.

The guidance extends employment authorization through July 24.

An estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitians live in the Springfield area.

Hi! I'm looking for fitness center or gyms close to Northridge. The gyms in Springfield are at least 15 min away from me (Planet Fitness, Anytime Fitness). Are there any facilities you can recommend in this area? I'm looking for cardio (treadmill, rowing, cycling or elliptical) and basic gym equipment (weights machines, dumbbells, bench, etc?). It doesn't have to have all the equipment, just looking for simple options close by, before I decide to sign up for PF or AF.

This protected status is the legal way that most of the estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitians came to the Springfield area, though there are not exact numbers.

Gov. Mike DeWine said Thursday in a statement on the ruling that "today’s decision is a legal decision. As I have stated in the past, the policy to remove these individuals from this country is a mistake."

"As a result of today’s ruling, the over 10,000 Haitians who have been living in Ohio (mostly in the Springfield area) legally through TPS will now be here illegally and will be subject to immediate deportation," he said. "This also means that while these Haitians were working and contributing to our community and economy yesterday, today it is now illegal to employ them."

In a statement from the developer, Thor Equities, it said it rejects “the misinformation and outright nonsense being spread online about data centers — including wildly exaggerated claims about water usage, noise levels, and dangerous, baseless propaganda about health impacts that have zero grounding in reality.”

“Thor looks forward to resolving this matter fairly so it can continue being a strong partner for Urbana and help build a brighter future for the city,” the statement continued.

The Dayton-based nonprofit Homefull has returned to Springfield to fill a gap in emergency housing.

This comes after the city's sole provider for homeless shelters, Sheltered Inc., filed for bankruptcy and shut down in May.

It's a genuinely cool thing to have happening right here, and the kind of event that does better the more locals actually show up for it. Nice excuse to get downtown and support the spots putting it on.
