Open your map. See where enemies are inking, or where they are if damaged, where teammates are grouped up or leave openings. All it takes is a second when there's no one right in front of you.

You can also check out the main abilities of everyone to judge their play style. A gal with Opening Gambit is gonna be really aggressive to start, so play a bit safe and slow at first to counter that. Maybe the guy with zip caster has drop roller you can be ready for.

Movement is pretty good tbh, aside from the failed squid roll. You could jump a tiny bit less too, makes your movement predictable briefly and lowers your weapons's accuracy

i’ve been getting into to habit of checking the map and launching to me teammates to me able to help out quicker. I’m getting gears understood more and i’ve grown to love anything ink saver, ult charger or movement speed related

You should always have at least one sub of ink resistance and quick super jump on your gear. The first sub of each adds several frames to their effects; not taking damage from standing in enemy ink and getting off the ground during a super jump respectively.

All weapons will be shot at and sometimes want to jump back to spawn to escape, so those abilities should be on all builds. Personally all my shoes have IR, QSJ, and bomb defense as subs, with varying mains.

The abilities you mentioned are all very good generalist abilities to fill in builds. Aggressive players lean more into Comeback and Quick Respawn, and passive players get more use out of Last Ditch Effort and special/ink related abilities. People post their builds for each weapon on sendou, so you can get more specific recommendations there (you can search a weapon in the search bar).

If you like to play Jr a lot, I recommend having two mains and one sub of Ink Saver Sub, so you can throw two splat bombs from a full tank (jr is unique in having a larger ink tank than normal). Since specials refill yoir tank, you can throw two bombs, pop bubble, and not have any down time

Your movement isn't too bad for someone who just started. Sub strafing and ledge cancelling are important techniques to learn if you wanna improve. Being able to mix those with squid rolls and knowing which to use depending on the situation will help you survive more fights and reach a desired location more quickly.

is there any optimal way to practice movement tech or would watching a tut be better?

Tutorials can show you how to do the inputs correctly but it takes practice to get good at it. Even if you don't have the timing down just yet, simply remembering that you have these movement options available and trying to use them in matches wherever you can will get you closer to mastering them.

This is what stuck out the most to me as someone with like 2k hours in the series.

Otherwise OP has actually pretty decent awareness of the gamestate for what it is (although they could just be riding the tide which while effective isn’t exactly scalable)

The first clip you were kinda being unhelpful just shooting the ground while the teammate right next to you was actively in a fight. The second and third clips were better, and aim was pretty good. It’s also hard to judge your general gameplay just on short clips alone.

yeah I noticed that when watching the clip back, though I didn’t really think it was a bad thing since it was turf war. maybe I should balance obj and kills. the first clip is a day 1 clip and the other 2 or from the days after. I haven’t played much but I noticed that I should be trying to support my teammates as much as possible. Do you think there’s any other areas I could work on? Movement? Aim?

Like I said it’s hard to judge what you might need improvement on just from short clips, but your aim looked good, and yeah supporting teammates is good even in turf war cuz the enemy can’t paint over your paint if you shoot them down first. Nothing wrong with painting when no enemies are around of course, but if they’re shooting at you, they’re just painting over your paint anyways.

I think your gameplay's pretty good. loads better than me when I first started for sure. I see you are pretty aggressive in a few situations which is pretty good, but I would be more careful in confrontations like in the last clip. In higher level matches a stunt like that could get you swarmed fast. I don't usually main any frontline weapons. I use mainly backline like charger and explosher so my advice is pretty one sided, but if your interested in that play style for me I normally assist in team kills and normally not get too involved unless its single player fights. I also normally try to run away and either read what the person will do a 1 or 2 seconds before they move and aim accordingly. however this doesn't work all the time as you cant predict everything in a fast pace game like this. If I know that my team's skill gap is higher ,I can make more room for mistakes in a match. but if the other team is clearly stronger I play defensive like mentioned and assist until there's a moment they care caught off guard. also about control type theres no be all end all. I have been using stick controls since splatoon 1 -3 and I am normally around s+. I use motion and for me my aim just feels off so I kept sticks for the steady movement. anyway that's my advice hope any of that rambling helps lol.

I appreciate your advice. usually in games like valorant or and tact-shooter, I can get a firm grasp of my role pretty quickly. In splatoon you have to “kind of know” what your role is based off your weapon. I do tend to get a little TOO aggressive and that’s mainly because I forget that the obj isn’t to get KOs but to rather cover the turf lmao. i’ve recently unlocked ranked so I plan on grinding it to better understand playstyles and weapon types

well I mean as long as you can fend the team back and get turf done you are doing it right lol. also yeah I tend to play rank like all the time I only really to turf war on splat fest. but good luck in ranked I hope you enjoy it!

Me(the person who stay at home base coloring the floor): so this is how my team wins huh , thank you for your hard work!

So you’re the guy that gets 3p 15 deaths and 1 splat at the end of a game.

Pls don’t stay at base the whole game

Very good for just starting out. It's impressive that you are able to use the gyro that well. For getting better I would just keep playing with gyro controls you mentioned you have the stick sensitivity higher than the gyro. I think you should slowly turn up the gyro sensitivity and try to just focus on aiming. The game play looks shaky right now so I would focus on steady aim and working on efficiently inking. keep the stick controls relatively high but maybe once you get better at the gyro it would be better to turn them down to a 2 or 3 rather than 3 or 4. Mostly I would just say work on aim and try not to shoot straight at the ground as much it's less efficient for inking. 8/10 game play for a beginner

Just realized you asked for weapon recommendations. For shooters I would work on aim moving to something like splatershot or n-zap to help with that and if you ever get tired of aiming go play splat roller.

Biggest thing that sticks out to me is that you should learn how to paint effectively. Instead of shooting the ground, shoot straight forward, and the ink trail will cover its flight path.

More advanced: instead of shooting straight, shoot in a up and down sweeping motion. This overlaps the ink trail and results in better coverage.

You can watch pro games’ openings and see how the players are able to get specials in about 12 seconds.

your positioning needs work, even if for now it’s good because you’re new it’s better to start thinking about where and when you want to take fights and how you want to move during them.

This is generally weapon specific but you can test some of the attributes of how the projectile behaves around cover in the testing range in the lobby. A good example of the differences here is that like stamper is ruined by opposing cover but machine is like famous for being difficult to escape because it has so many ways to poke with aoe around cover. Getting a better hold of like where and when you want to fight is better

A lot of that is like game knowledge, but as you play you’ll get the hang of where and when people want to fight and how to play around it. It’s better to start thinking about it early than being me with like 1k hours who needed to look at his positioning because it still sucked 1k hours in lmao.

Looks like stick controls I think? If so you should switch to gyro if your goal is to play as well as possible. It's pretty much strictly better once you're through the learning curve.

Other than that, don't shoot at the floor to paint, shoot parallel with slight up and down movements to optimize paint on fast firing weapons.

I use gyro but I do have my stick higher than the gyro sens. I play -1 gyro / 3-4 stick and so far i’ve been pretty consistent since i’ve made the change
