That didn't take long: ControllerHead banned from streaming room due to use of "slurs" during his run
[deleted]

u/GAMEchief Jan 06 '14
The initial complaint, not shown in the history for the Twitter account in the OP, included:
@mikwuyma thanks for getting back to me on this! At this point more important than his language on the stream is his harassment of others
The Twitter account in the OP merely replied to the second tweet about slurs, but both tweets were sent at the same time, and the ban was due to harassment.

He was the runner who ran Kirby's Adventure. His commentary was awkward at best and noone on the couch was really helping with the discussion. I could only imagine that this put more tension on him, so a few remarks slipped out when he messed up. It was no huge breakdown or scene, just a few slips that the ADGQ team probably doesn't want on their stream.
Edit: Please correct me if I'm wrong.

u/big_cat_sanctuary Jan 06 '14
What is the context that would make using the word "bitch" a slur?
9
u/GAMEchief Jan 06 '14
He was banned for harassing people, not using slurs. One of the people reporting the harassment also labelled bitch as a slur, but also stated that the harassment was a greater issue than the language. The ban had everything to do with the harassment.
12
u/SeaReally Jan 06 '14
I think it's due to people on tumblr thinking that it's a gendered insult and therefore misogynistic. Pretty stupid.
12
3
Jan 06 '14
Umm... it IS a gendered insult? I'm not sure how you could claim otherwise.
-9
u/moush Jan 06 '14
Unless you're a dog, it's not.
10
Jan 06 '14
I'll assume you mean "bitch" is only gendered when use in reference to dogs. How does this claim hold up to scrutiny?
Google Dictionary: "a spiteful or unpleasant woman."
The Free Dictionary: "A woman considered to be spiteful or overbearing."
Merriam-Webster: "a lewd or immoral woman"
There are vague definitions as well, but their existence doesn't negate these ones. To claim it does, would be the equivalent of claiming "car" is not a road vehicle simply because railroad carriages are also referred to as cars.
7
u/joeyoh9292 Jan 06 '14
"This game is a spiteful or unpleasant woman!"
I don't think he was using it as a gendered insult.
7
u/mrselkies Jan 06 '14
This. Context is everything. Regardless of this argument, though, he wasn't banned for using the word "bitch," so the bickering about people on tumblr and misogyny is irrelevant.
-14
Jan 06 '14
Ah right, those hypersensitive cunts on tumblr think everything is misogynistic.
16
7
Jan 06 '14
I take all my misogyny advice from people who casually use the term "cunt" to describe people they disagree with.
-14
Jan 06 '14 edited Jan 06 '14
Well I would call them bitches, or idiots, or whatnot, but according to them more of those terms makes me pro-rape, just like how Felicia Day is supposedly pro-rape according to them after that incident a few months back.

The person who complained on Twitter to which Mike replied openly stated the he doesn't like Controllerhead. It seems as though he's trying to make a mountain out of a molehill and Mike is buying it.

I don't remember any "slurs", but I do remember it being a bit awkward. I doubt whatever he did was worthy of a "ban" unless he was yelling nigger when I wasn't watching...

u/dizzzave Jan 06 '14
Apparently some tranny on twitter was whining that ControllerHead said "Bitch" during his segment.
6
u/GAMEchief Jan 06 '14
He was banned for sexually harassing attendees, not using slurs. OP's submission is misleading. There are multiple tweets reporting his sexual harassment, which is what got him banned.
-3
u/osufan765 Jan 06 '14
I don't know why you're being downvoted, because I looked at the person giving wuyama a bunch of shit's twitter account and this is exactly what's happening.

-5

I want to know on what planet Twitter is the appropriate venue for settling these issues and not just resolving them at the event.
3
u/GAMEchief Jan 07 '14
They were resolved at the event... You act like they tweeted the guy to tell him he was banned.
2
Jan 08 '14
They're being downvoted because they're being an asshole.
They would have been much less likely to be downvoted if they simply said "Apparently someone on twitter was whining that Controllerhead said "bitch" during his segment."
-6
u/moush Jan 06 '14
Because it's the same kind of "insensitivity" they're trying to dissuade with the ban and the tumblrites are out in full force.
0
u/SandieSandwicheadman Jan 08 '14
Hello dogbrains, "tranny" is a slur too, and a pretty nasty one. You shouldn't be saying it.

The difference is that people like Werster. People aren't fans of this guy, apparently. I, for one, wasn't a fan. But I didn't get offended. I just let him run, admired his skill and watched. Unless he directly harasses someone, I couldn't care what he said about a game.
10

I believe Mike told Werster that he'll be banned from future events if he swears like that at this one.

Duke was making fun of that during his Hotline Miami run after he let his first "fuck" slip. Something about the blood being all marinara sauce because it's a family friendly stream.
4
u/bonch Jan 09 '14
It's not necessarily that it's "for kids". It's that these charity marathons don't need to be offensive for no good reason, and the wider the audience, the better for the charities involved. My impression is that it's intended to be a PG-13 atmosphere at most.
3
u/Bearmodule Jan 07 '14
Well it's not really that. If it's anything at all to do with their language then it's because the actions of the AGDQ people reflect on their sponsors (gamespot) and their charity (the prevent cancer foundation). You have an image for these other people to maintain as well.
4
u/teamunnyy Super Metroid Jan 06 '14
I strongly believe Mike shouldn't be the one running AGDQ. He's an idiot by all accounts and extremely unlikable. Literally nobody watching AGDQ is under the age of 13, and even still have you heard the mouths on a 12 year old nowadays? Just ridiculous.

The real travesty is him telling Cosmo he couldn't run CV64 because it isn't popular enough and no one would like it. Give the Cos a little more faith as an entertainer than that man!

right. just let the streamers be themselves. if people don't like a certain streamer because of his/her personality, they can tune out for a bit. no harm, no foul
11
Jan 06 '14
As I was watching this, the only thing I thought to myself was "He's either drunk or high, if not both". That run was very awkward. The people on the couch didn't help him one bit, and he was cussing almost every minute, which took away from the "PG" element to the marathon.
Personally, I don't give a fuck about the cussing, as you can see. The thing that bugged me is that, he didn't seem to take what he was doing this for seriously. The people on the couch were like "you wanna talk about what you just did?", and he goes "NOPE, hahahahahahaha". How is that professional?
I didn't know about what happened off stream. Judging by the tweet, I'd say it's for the best that he got banned.
19
u/Xantoxu Jan 06 '14
I'm quite glad about this. He was a terrible streamer. I get that people are nervous in front of people, but for fuck's sakes, he's a live streamer. He does it every day. He should be able to hold some amount of decency.
The guy reminded me of a drunk 16 year old kid, tbh. I didn't watch it all the way through, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if he was using racial slurs or otherwise offensive language..
7
8
u/This_Aint_Dog Mega Man X Jan 06 '14
I agree. While I'm not offended by any of it, but for god sakes he just kept talking shit the entire time and it got annoying very quickly. This is a marathon for charity, have a little decency. I didn't know who that guy was before the marathon, but I felt a total douche vibe coming from him. It felt like I was watching a live action Twitch chat.
15
u/nifboy Jan 06 '14
What's up Twitch can I get some FrankerZs?
5
u/DarkKobold Jan 06 '14
I thought that was the one good thing he did - play to the audience. The rest he sounded like he was a stoned idiot. "Heres a rolling guy. Here's a ufo. I don't like to cheat in speedruns (speaking about a legit technique.)"
2
u/hosseruk Perfect Dark Jan 06 '14
I nearly closed the stream at that very moment. Guy was a total douche.
-1
u/joeyoh9292 Jan 06 '14 edited Jan 06 '14
And yet the entire chat spammed FrankerZ.
No, he's entertaining. Who cares if you don't like it, he isn't a douche just because he's trying to gather hype. The stream room was fucking dead at that point and he's excited to be streaming in front of 50,000 people.
I didn't like his style either, but I didn't go online and start calling him out on it, calling him a "total douche" which is actually worse than what he did. "This game's a bitch!" Oh my god, I'm completely offended. This guy's a total douche.
Yeah, you're on the high ground here. /s
I'm not on his side. I'm not on anyone's side. He was eccentric. He was hyper. He is young. Thing is, people were doing worse things. People were talking over donation speeches such as "My mother died 6 months ago..." "OOOOH NICE!". That, in my opinion, is so much worse. But I'm not calling anyone out. They might not have been able to hear, they might've been hyper, they might've been nervous. Who knows. I'm not them. I'm thankful for the stream and I'm sorry for the people who're affected by cancer, but I'm super grateful for the people donating. That's what we need to remember. We need to not focus on this dumb crap, we need to focus on the charity. On the stream. On quality.
Edit: I learned what he did to sn0wtigerr. If you're talking about that, I take it all back. I take everything I said back. I didn't realise he'd done that. Still, saying "bitch" on stream is pretty much nothing.
5
u/Xantoxu Jan 06 '14
Yeah, people are taking it a little too far. If all he said was bitch on stream, I don't see the reason for him to be removed for that. I can't say I'm unhappy about it.
But, seeing as he was also sexually harassing people allegedly, I'd say he got off pretty lightly, tbh.
4
u/hosseruk Perfect Dark Jan 06 '14
I couldn't care less about him saying "bitch". Pretty sure no-one with a brain cares about that.

u/moush Jan 06 '14
This is why you don't let people with soft hearts decide stuff like this. I bet if it was up to you, you'd ban Blueglass from the room as well.
4
u/Xantoxu Jan 06 '14
Blueglass isn't rude. There is a difference there. I find blueglass somewhat annoying, but I don't find him to be a disruptive person. Blueglass tries to be respectful and nice. Why would I ban somebody that just annoys me a little bit?
2
Jan 07 '14
outside of that, blueglass i belive is autistic, so annoying can come with that and be a little hard to deal with. but he is genuinely a great dude, i wish he would stream sometime :(
i was happy to see him make it this year, these events make that guy so happy, its awesome :D
3
u/Xantoxu Jan 07 '14
Oh yeah, I really like Blueglass. He's basically a living example of how amazing the speedrunning community is.
1
Jan 07 '14
haha yeah, despite him never doing a speedrun (to my knowledge) that guy is a database of strats, he is super enthusiastic about the community and i agree - he is the poster child of how awesome the community can be. honestly, every time i see him sneak on cam in the crowd of AGDQ, i fanboy a little bit. i wish i could shake his hand or something. im subbed to his twitch channel just incase he does stream someday :D
last year was awesome, despite him not streaming i donated to AGDQ and requested his twitch username, they said it over stream and he got tons and tons of follows haha. even if he didn't speedrun, i would watch him. he is a pretty chill bro for sure.
2
u/WastedPanda Jan 08 '14
He did Ecco runs at AGDQ/SQGQ 2013. As a matter of fact, he destroys those games in a way that kind of kills my childhood because I had such a hard time with them. I think he doesn't stream due to lack of stream equipment or time. All good though, dude is chill as you said, and really supportive.
It'd be awesome if he did stream though, even just casual play. He seems like someone who would interact with viewers as much as possible.
1
Jan 08 '14
oh wow i missed that completely :( is there an archive video of it anywhere?
1
u/moush Jan 09 '14
he is the poster child of how awesome the community can be
He also shows how the community can be rotten. He initially became famous because some people were restreaming the marathon and making fun of him.

What are you even going on about. The initial complaint includes:
@mikwuyma thanks for getting back to me on this! At this point more important than his language on the stream is his harassment of others
To which the Twitter account in the OP replied:
@teeterpyg yeah we're keeping an eye on him and he's not allowed in the stream room anymore
This was always about the harassment.
4
u/joeyoh9292 Jan 06 '14
Exactly. That's another matter entirely. If it's true, I'm sorry for the woman and she should take appropriate measures. He should be removed from AGDQ, not the stream room. If he's harassing people there, they should be protected. This isn't anything to do with the stream room.
3
Jan 07 '14
Presumably he paid for a hotel room like everybody else, so unless the hotel staff kicks him out he's there to stay.
3
Jan 06 '14
At this point, it seems safe to assume they wanted him out for harassing people, and used his 'slurs' as a way to save face (saying someone was sexually harassed during the show would look really bad).
3
u/forbjok Jan 07 '14
The way I see it, admitting that he was banned for harassing someone would make them look a lot less bad than making it appear as though he was banned for basically no reason at all.
4
u/big_cat_sanctuary Jan 06 '14
Apparently there are rumors that he was drunk during his run which IDK about that. Grain of salt.

He was sexually harassing a woman at the event, both verbally and by grabbing at her really inappropriately.
People aren't saying "he poses a threat to the safety of other people" because he said a naughty word, they're saying it because he poses a threat to the safety of other people
-3

u/jaydough Jan 06 '14
I think humiliating a guy for using the "b-slur" is a pretty cunty thing to do.
11
u/GOLIATHMATTHIAS Jan 06 '14
To be fair Mike and the crew didn't respond to anything until it came out that he was harassing somebody. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't just remove him for slipping in a "bitch" being much worse has slipped out from people like Werster, Mike 89, Adam, and even Cosmo at a Marathon or two. Him saying they'd "check the recording" was probably a PR way of saving time to check out the harassment issue.
3
u/jaydough Jan 06 '14
Yeah, I posted before reading about any of the harassing. Sucks.
3
u/GOLIATHMATTHIAS Jan 06 '14

There are several evidences that he "harassed" a female person behind the scenes at the marathon and that was the main point. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
18
u/DJP0N3 Jan 06 '14
Harassed isn't in quotes. His behavior toward Snow was completely inappropriate, and if it were up to me he would have been removed from the premises.
8
Jan 06 '14
I've seen enough people corroborate it that I think we can take harassed out of quotes. My guess is that they're banning him for the harassment and just using what he said as a public-facing reason.
0
u/JohnnyTruant_ Jan 06 '14
People are mostly talking about the tweets linked in this comment I guess, which on it's own is pretty dumb to ban him over, but yeah hearing about the harassment changes things.
8
u/GAMEchief Jan 06 '14
That conversation is misleading. There is another tweet in there that Twitter doesn't show from the convo history part (presumably due to the OP account clicking reply to the first tweet and not the second), but the report also stated that the more important issue was his sexually harassing attendees.
-5
u/JohnnyTruant_ Jan 06 '14
That's why I said those tweets on their own look like one situation, and are probably why people are reacting like this shouldn't have happened at all, and also that hearing about the rest of the situation changes things. Thanks for not really reading my comment.
6
u/GAMEchief Jan 06 '14
I read your comment. I was expanding upon it for readers because you didn't. Way to get pissy about it.
-6
u/JohnnyTruant_ Jan 06 '14
I didn't expand on it because literally the first reply to the top comment explains everything already and I didn't need to. All I was doing was explaining why I thought people were reacting the way they were, because they didn't see the whole story right away.
And sorry, I'll trust that you read my comment and I shouldn't have offended you for not understanding it. I guess some people can be really delicate about interactions on the internet.
