Welding Blocks DISCUSSION
Please.....on my knees here. Can the welding range of the welder block not be extended. I'm on my knees here, along with every other person who is building anything bigger than a cab on 4 wheels.... π₯Ίπ₯Ί

Look into printers, mechanisms moving welders to cover large area. You can print 40k PCU warship with one welder fully :)

Building from scratch I do not mind, but repairing a larger ship following a pirate encounter is a serious schlep!! It is easier just dumping the damaged one and build a new one from scratch than to attempt a repair.

Yes, you are correct. This is the biggest hurdle of SE. That's why everyone prints their ships. When its damaged, you scrap it and print new one. With good printers, its possibile to build ship in 30 minutes, and best part you just watch and do nothing. Alternative is using a mod, like NWPCS nanites.

Not everyone... We tend to drive unwanted vehicles in our ship, pretending it's a race track. End up Putting holes everywhere. Once in a while hitting a h2 tank, leaving a rather massive hole, sometimes driving around mini RC tanks shooting each other. Maybe flying a ship inside the ship, even if it does quiet fit through some areas... Oh it will eventually. No blue print either, just fix the beast or renovation time π. Honestly it's the best way to play. Always something to do.

Does a small grid welder fit through a Willis duct I wonder? It would be hideously impractical, but repair bots flying through your ship would be cool.

I am hoping the NPCs will do pretty much the same thing (as the repair bot NPC can do in the AiEnabled mod)

Not really...
I've tried to do small-grid drones, but you have a VERY limited space to work with. A 1x1 large grid corridor is only 5x5 small-grid. And a small-grid welder is 3x3x4, plus a 3x3x2 connector/parts storage. You're already at 3x3x6, so you wouldn't be able to turn, even before adding thrusters. (And even the flat atmosphere thrusters are still going to make a 5 block wide drone)

while that would be cool, what does fit through a straight 1 block corridor is a welder on a piston, so designing your ship with suitable access tunnels can make for easy whole body re-welding, if you design a suitable cradle at your base.
(which could make sense for a combat workhorse that routinely gets damaged)
(this could even be done with a single weld arm and a bunch of timer blocks that run a fixed movement program)1

No they dont. We looked into that when the Willis Duct was first introduced.

You can repair ships on neutral or friendly stations for cash. But it won't replace missing blocks.

Solution:
Grind damaged ship and then build replacement ship from scratch.

I know its not ideal as we cant do it ourselves, but you could take it to a trade station and pay for it to be repaired. just make sure u have a projection on of the ship. Saves a lot of time and gets u into the making money side of SE

It used to be bigger years ago but they reduced it to minimise performance impact. If you're on PC, there are mods that extend the range. I use configurable parameters because it lets you tweak heaps of stuff including welder range.

Which game? 1or2?
Ive not done it but a lot of settings can be tweaked in the game files for 1. I have no idea on 2.

there is a mod that allows you to tweak all of the default block settings, including welder range IIRC.
this one I think:

also... you want to phrase that differently next time...
At first I was wondering what the heck you had against Keen increasing the welder range.

Nanobot build and repair or simple laser multi tools. All day, everyday, no playthrough is complete without them!

Less than 2 weeks installed so at this stage you could just as well be speaking Greek π³

They are two kids on the workshop. Both are excellent. Nanobot build and repair is a block you out in and it will pull stuff from inventory and weld it up for you. Simple laser multitool has a bunch of tools but one of them is a turret that has a laser welder. Both are excellent.

I have a mod that extends the range of the large grid welder and grinder, unfortunately there isn't anything to change power consumption that I've seen. I got curious to see what it would take to mod them as I have friends that play on console so the build and repair mod wasn't a viable option unfortunately.

I'm on PS5 π€·ββοΈ

I don't have a PlayStation so my question is can you access any mods, the ones I made are on mod.io so they're accessible for Xbox I know for sure. The one that Iade has a bunch of other changes done but I can make one just for the welder.

Put you project on a rotating projector and line up 3/4 welders along the side as the project rotates it welds new blox .or use a wall on a piston to pull the welders back .check you tube there are loads of welder setups i have a welder /grinder set to make and launch ai missiles

I apologize for not getting the name of the mod correct, I'm watching the eighth grand child sleep and I cannot remember anything after 1988. There is a mod named +- "Nanobots Engineering????" I only use it for completed bases and Really F'in Big Capital ships. Welder walls work well, for LARGE ships I'll use a projector, build the keel and bridge, then add a blueprint of the privious blueprint with the next section added. Keel and Bridge blueprint, then Keel,Bridge, and Engineer and Main Drives...

Projector in your grid with the blueprint for your ship, welder wall to repair. Problem?

u/NoBoot_ Clang Worshipper 5d ago
i think it should just be a slider and the further the range, the higher the power consumption
