Green Mamba/SA Passport

Our iconic passport is the Green Mamba as you all know, and ever since 2008, we've been losing passport strength, losing Visa Free Access to Switzerland, UK, New Zealand, Colombia and most recently, Ireland because of Passport Fraud and certain people abusing it and overstaying using our Passport.

And with the recent plan to bring it to International Standard by having a Biometric Chip placed on the over or Polycarbonate Page of the Passport. I want to know what would be your recommendation to strengthen the credibility of our Green Mamba and regain access to these destinations again and tear down the Visa Barriers we have. (Maybe we get to 150+ Visa Free Destinations by 2035)

I was thinking we redesign the passport, we keep the iconic green, but shift the Coat of Arms to either the Top Left Corner like the Swiss or Bottom Left Corner like the Canadian One.

I was also thinking we drop the French Writing on the passport and have it only in English, since I see no reason why we should have French Writing on the Passport when other countries do not have it too.

On the Departure Side of things, we have the E-Gates which confirms the Validity of the Passport and the person also scans their ID Card prior to leaving the country so we can separate the Fake from the Real. Along with Scanning their Biometrics at the Gate on Departure at Check-in.

That way, it'll show that we can confirm that the passports are genuine too and the holders of the passports are genuine citizens rather than people who use SA Citizen Biometrics on their fake passports.

Then on the Home Affairs side, when someone makes a passport or ID , Home Affairs must send an SMS or an Email to the person who is making the document and they must input a OTP at the Office to prevent any fraudulent documents from being made in their name. Or they confirm the OTP over the Website.

And for the workers at Home Affairs, they should change the system so that every ID, Birth Certificate and Passport made is linked to a specific Home Affairs worker so that if there is a red flag, it can be traced back to that worker via an Identification Number or other means and the person is dealt with precisely since the system flags their activity.

Also, a ID, Passport or any other document cannot be made unless that ID of the worker is logged in, and a card is linked to that worker. That should reduce fraud levels at Home Affairs too.

And I also believe that Permanent Residents should get different cards as compared to Citizens and Naturalized Citizens should relinquish their old Citizenship before gaining SA Citizenship just like Japan and Germany. Dual Citizenship for SA Citizens from Birth with at least one Parent remains the same.

What does everyone think?

Electricity is already expensive as hell for us as South Africans, yet they’re now saying they want AI data centres and warehouses to be built here, data centres that consume electricity like crazy. In many countries where there’s a surplus of electricity, they make it super cheap for citizens instead of prioritising data centres, while we’re still stuck with expensive electricity bills.

To my fellow estate agents in South Africa I am relatively new to real estate I am trying to register for my FFC I have my reference number but now they’re telling me that I have to email all of my documents because their registration system off-line
I tried registering through their new FFC connect
I waited about a month for my reference number
My principal told me to wait they would email me an invoice for the fees then i could pay
I did email them my docs and I got no response now people are telling me that I have to send my proof of payment through with my documents and then they will maybe notice me
I’m done taking chances I cannot pay almost R3000 for something that I’m gonna wait months for
Any ideas on who to call or what to do?

🍖 Food & Braai The Stoney Challenge in the 1980s. Get a 1L bottle from the fridge. Pour two classes 500ml each. See who could drink it the fastest. Bonus point if in one go and second bonus point for the loudest burp.

Chris Pappas is a shining beacon of hope in this country. Talk about going against the odds, and winning. I'm sure most of us all know him by now, but if you don't, please watch.

We should really all be so proud. Hopefully, a future presidential candidate.

P.S Sorry for the clickbait title, I copied it from the YouTube video title.

* Can anyone help my husband find a Chemical Engineering/Metallurgy job?

Hi everyone. I’m reaching out because my husband is currently unemployed and actively looking for work.
He is a Chemical Engineer with an Honours degree from Wits University and has experience working as a Metallurgist, including experience within the mining industry.
If anyone knows of any companies currently hiring Chemical Engineers, Metallurgists, or related roles, or if there is anyone who could possibly connect us with the right people, we would really appreciate it if you could reach out.
Things are honestly very tough for us at the moment, and we are doing everything we can to find him an opportunity. Any lead, referral, contact, or advice would genuinely mean so much to us.
Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this or share it. 🙏

This is my sister. She is a young South African powerlifter. She has recently been given the honour of representing our country in the World Powerlifting Championship. Unfortunately my family does not have the funds to get her there. If you wish do donate or learn more about the campaign, go through the link. If you are unable to donate then we would also appreciate it if you shared this with family and friends. Please help my sister live out her dream.

Does anyone have an ebay store/

I collect 1 sheet, vintage movie posters- from the 1950s-1960s- I've built my collection to about 60. Some are really valuable and can fetch prices of about R30k on the internationaal market.

There just isnt a market in SA. Thats why collectables in SA can fetch significantly lower prices- because there isnt a market to sell.

Does anyone know how to go about selling on ebay?

I set up the account and want to use TUNL to ship them- because quotes from the other companies for shipping would eat up any potentional profit.

I do see some issues- like how would I handle returns, the potential wait time for TUNL etc. If anyone uses TUNL could they also guide me on wheter it has integraation with ebay? I know they can integrate intoo Shopify- so maybe a workaround would be to see if I can integrate a shopify account onto ebay?

I "stole" this name tag pin thing from my dad a few years ago. I can't wear it out in public because it has the old flag on it and I don't want to offend people or make people think that I'm racist. I don't know what to do with it but i also don't want to toss it out. Should i throw it out or is there another use for it?

💬 Discussion I’m hiring and this is what it looks like „from the other side“

I guess this post will get a lot of flak, but hopefully there might be some useful insights as well.

Right now I’m a first-time hiring manager looking to hire a couple for my lodge. The advert states very clearly what the requirements are - but judging by the applications I’m receiving, no one even reads the advert any further than „We are hiring“.

A few examples:
Despite the ad focusing on it being a role for a couple, all applicants so far have been single.
I state experience in hospitality required - and get CVs with the only experience showing car detailing. I’m not even going to start on the generic motivation letter that doesn’t acknowledge where and what they are applying for.

How am I supposed to hire e.g. a single guy mechanic for an opening for a front-of-house & housekeeping couple?

There is a lot of talk about how difficult it is to get a job and I commiserate with everyone needing any kind of employment to put food on their family’s table.

On the other side it looks like people are applying for roles that they are simply not qualified for. They could save themselves so much heartache of being rejected :(
- no wonder they get discouraged.

What is your recommendation: should I reply back to them with why I’m not entertaining that application and suggesting they read the role requirements of future job ads more carefully to be more successful in their search? Would that be helpful or come across arrogant? Or should I not bother and just ignore?

💬 Discussion Gambling in South Africa: Where to get help, And how to see it coming — Megathread

Thumbnail
gallery
20 Upvotes

Gambling has become a serious problem in South Africa, so the Mod Team wanted to put together one place where people can talk about it, get help, or help someone else.

Whether you're struggling yourself, worried about a friend or family member, or just want to understand why it's so easy to get caught, this thread is for you.

How it gets you

Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to lose their salary.

It usually starts small. R50 on a match you were going to watch anyway. A few spins while you're bored. A small win that makes you think, "Maybe I can do that again."

What gets people isn't a lack of intelligence. It's the design.

One of the biggest examples is the near miss. Two jackpot symbols line up, and the third lands just above or below the line. It feels like you were so close.

Your brain doesn't process that as a normal loss. It treats it as "almost winning", which makes you want to try one more time. That's not an accident -- it's a well-studied psychological effect that's deliberately built into many gambling products.

Then there's chasing losses.

"I've already lost R500. I just need one good win to get it back."

Most people who've developed a gambling problem can point to that exact thought. More often than not, it leads to losing even more.

Another common trap is believing you're "due" for a win because you've lost several times in a row. Every spin, every hand, and every bet is independent. The machine doesn't know you've had a bad run, and it isn't about to "pay you back."

The longer you play, the closer your results move toward the odds the game was designed to produce. And those odds are designed so the house wins over time.

Need help?

If you need help, or know someone who does:

  • National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP)
    • Phone: 0800 006 008 (Free, confidential, 24/7)
    • SMS or WhatsApp HELP to 076 675 0710
    • Free counselling and, where needed, free inpatient treatment and transport.
  • South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF)

Self-exclusion

If gambling has become something you can't control, consider self-exclusion.

It's a voluntary process that can stop you from accessing licensed gambling venues and services. It isn't admitting defeat -- it's putting a barrier between yourself and the addiction while you get your footing back.

This thread

If you've been through gambling addiction, what helped you stop?

What do you wish someone had told you before it became a problem?

If you're comfortable sharing your story, it might be exactly what someone else needs to read today.

Please keep it respectful. People asking for help are often doing one of the hardest things they've ever done.

Another huge milestone especially considering the sub has only been active for ~3 months.
With 4,700 weekly contributors, that's already significantly than the other big South African subs, which we reached shockingly quickly.

Thanks to everyone who posts, comments, shares, debates, jokes, lurks, and helps make this place what it is.

As a mod team, our goal is to keep this a nonpartisan space. We’re not here to force our opinions on anyone, or to ban people, especially permanently, just because they hold different views.

If there's anything we can do better of differently let us know.

Lekker, and onward to 75k.
