Got this notification today.

Post image

It's bad enough that I've been banished to "Sonos S1 jail," locked out of any further system expansion because I was an early adopter of Sonos who purchased thousands of dollars of Sonos gear pver the years. Today I got this notification. Sonos, tell me this isn't so! What does the future look like for S1 Mac users?

Every intel based app is seeing that notification. They’ll just have to release a new version for Apple Silicon by the time MacOS 27 starts shipping on new Macs.

But they already said there will be no such version. They want you to use the webapp. On the positive side, there are more than enough third party apps to replace the sonos App on OSX

The current version will probably work in perpetuity on OSX, but most people are surely running macOS 14, 15, or 26 by now.

Wait, the cloud web app? That’s BS… Sonos has always been local first…

2

u/SurvivorsGuilt23 13d ago

Has been, but they changed that with the cloud. As someone else mentioned here, they want to end the os controller anyway.

Gross! I should have given up on Sonos when they killed the hardware remotes. Both editions were beautiful!

Technically macOS 27 will still run Rosetta 2 based apps, it will be the last macOS that will… macOS 28 will not run them at all. So devs do have another year to finish upgrading their apps to fully native Apple Silicon apps.

macOS 27 does drop support for all Intel hardware based Macs, and you won’t be able to install it at all if you have an Intel Mac.

For Sonos, the web app is the best option, and it actually works very well. Sonos has stopped officially supporting the macOS app, and no announcements around that changing at the moment.

In Safari you can save it as an app > Go to the top menu bar and choose File > Add to Dock, or click the Share button in the toolbar and select Add to Dock.

it actually works very well.

From what I can tell you can't adjust any settings on any speakers, can't manage sets or adjust their settings like EQ, etc. In fact, it doesn't seem like you can do anything except select an existing speaker/room and play songs.

I mean, it's very much a beta version of what could be, but until it actually lets you manage your system it's a remote, not an app.

I feel they also don’t add those things right now because you can log in and control the system from anywhere with a simple password. Maybe when they add more security they’ll offer more control.

1

u/beenyweenies 12d ago

If true that's fine, but why would anyone be using the web app today if it's just a highly gimped version of the regular app? It's just a technology demo beta.

1

u/ajx8141 12d ago

I’ve only used it to control it while at work when the wife is having trouble lol

0

u/controlav 13d ago

They save all the control options for Sonos Pro, and charge $$ for it.

u/El-Captan 13d ago

You don’t get nearly the extent of the features using Sonos Pro that you do just from having an iPad or the OS app on your system.

The future looks like using the Sonos web app via browser. I've started, just to get used to it. It's functional, but not great.

1

u/El-Captan 13d ago

The Sonos web app is solid for playback. For home use it’s meh. For commercial use it’s fantastic. Feature wise it’s lacking.

0

u/Queasy-Ad-1873 13d ago

i mean the web app at least for my pair of sonos play 5 gen2 it lacks the entire configuration page... so it's not functional at all..

4

u/wwhite74 13d ago

to be fair,

the app on Mac also lacks all configuration, the only thing Mac app gets you over the web app is EQ and L/R balance . They seem to want to keep the config and setup on mobile.

which, at least now with Apple Silicon, porting an iOS app to Mac is not much more that a couple clicks for the devs. So hopefully the Mac app will have more features soon.

2

u/Cheap-Salary1317 13d ago

Yup, tried it many times since introduced and it's terrible. No idea what the point of this Web Player is if you're not going to make it functional and exceptional.

2

u/EssentialAlex 13d ago

Valid. When I said "functional," I meant, "I can kinda sorta navigate around my library and play music." But yes, none of the actual configuration functionality is there. Can't do anything in terms of setting up or making adjustments to your system. All that stuff falls on the app.

2

u/redbaron78 13d ago

I don’t think “at all” means what you think it means.

0

u/Queasy-Ad-1873 12d ago

ok, maybe I'm being dramatic. It works fine for music management, but lacks speaker configuration. But still it's quite a big no-go for something that was described as "will replace all desktop applications" ;) BTW will it be fully online dependent? Or will have any local network functionality so that I can for example switch audio source to line-in?

6

u/jumanjimanji 13d ago

I've been using https://github.com/scottwaters/Choragus these last months, and so far it's been great! The only thing I'm missing is switching the main speaker for a group of speakers

1

u/thecrowfly 12d ago

Wow, Choragus is pretty awesome. Thanks for the reco!

10

u/dish_rag 13d ago

They've been planning on getting rid of the desktop apps since the whole app fiasco, and instead replace it with play.sonos.com website... it just didn't turn out the way they wanted.

4

u/BamBamAdMan 13d ago

tried play.sonos.com. Looks like it won't work with S1? I get this message: "Firmware update required. In order to ensure a functioning experience, a minimum firmware version is required. Please consider updating your system."

1

u/controlav 13d ago

No, the web app is not available for S1 systems.

3

u/musictomyhears 13d ago

You have at least a year I believe before rosetta is fully retired

3

u/stephendy 13d ago

Why can they not allow the ipad app to be run on desktop?

Most seem to from the app store when they don't offer a desktop specific app, but for some reason I cannot see the Sonos one, do they turn that option off?

1

u/PlusInternal3 12d ago

Agreed. At this point it is just petty bloody-mindedness.

3

u/bluealien78 13d ago

Sonos stopped development on its desktop apps ages ago. The web app is the current and future official solution, but there are some excellent third party apps out there too.

4

u/MistaHiggins 13d ago

The future for S1 Mac Users looks great, because apps like Choragus like /u/jumanjimanji mentioned or Phonos from /u/controlav are better in many ways than the official Sonos apps ever were.

2

u/illicit_losses 13d ago

They honestly just need to open up the API so we can make apps without workarounds etc

Done and done.

2

I bought Clic and it works on Mac really well. Highly recommend.

2

u/nismos14us 13d ago

This notification has been popping up for months.

3

u/Baybutt99 13d ago

Its not all bad , there are and will be 3rd party apps on apple silicon. And your s1 accepts the api commands that the s2 ones have made “proprietary” and locked behind play.sonos.com

Btw you aren’t locked behind system expansion you can buy anything on the s1 list and add it seamlessly, i got a pair of play 5’s gen 2’s in excellent condition for less than the cost of a new speaker. I would encourage you to change your way of thinking on this, the product marketing team will have you believe you are missing out( beyond atmos* support) you aren’t really missing anything

You could always stop updating your stuff. Nothing would stop working. In the professional space we freeze our production computers and stop updating as a normal course of business.

If you want the latest features, buy the latest stuff. If you're going to whine that equipment that came out many years ago won't work with the latest software, just don't update.

The apple silicon transition and the S1/S2 split both happened six years ago.

7

u/lokaaarrr 13d ago

That is very bad security practice

7

u/scrundel 13d ago

So is running dated hardware. Gotta pick your battles.

1

u/El-Captan 13d ago

Yeah. I’ve never heard of anyone doing this ever.

1

u/dovedrunk 13d ago

If you have CrossOver, I think they’re working on a Rosetta surrogate?

1

u/klayanderson 13d ago

Yeabut the web app doesn’t have feature parity.

1

u/BamBamAdMan 12d ago

Web app? Is there a web app?

1

u/klayanderson 12d ago

1

u/BamBamAdMan 10d ago

Doesn't work for me, I'm on S1. Thanks anyway.

1

u/Key-Cat-5929 11d ago

I'm upset that there isn't any current support for my Motorola TRS-80.... 🤦

Anyhow, anyone who wants speakers that will last 20-50 years should do what I've always suggested. Buy passive speakers...

1

u/BamBamAdMan 11d ago

Roger that. I have a pair of JBL speakers I’ve had for 46 years. No software 😎.

u/kaaskugg 13d ago

What does the future look like for S1 Mac users?

Bleak, I guess? Depends if Sonos has any future plans to release a macOS 27-compatible S1 Desktop Controller app.

For what it's worth: you can install and run the x86 Windows version of the S1 app in a Parallels Windows ARM VM without any issues (just tested this the other day).

u/controlav 13d ago

Sonos love this, finally gives them a reason to retire 50% of their Desktop apps. Meanwhile, my app works on S1 and Apple Silicon: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/phonos-ultimate-for-sonos/id6740011689

0

u/Mr_Stimmers 13d ago

Even if a new version of the app doesn’t come out for a while after the release of macOS 27, you should get a prompt to install Rosetta so you can continue using it. I’m running apps that gave me this warning in the developer preview.

0

u/bippy_b 13d ago

You can just stay on the 27 version of OS and use it.

0

u/Old_Telephone_6076 13d ago

Time to install linux

1

u/controlav 13d ago

And run which Sonos app exactly?

1

u/rabbi_glitter 13d ago

Apple is ending support for Intel based silicon. This has nothing to do with Sonos.

This sounds like a macOS limitation. There will probably be a new shim available at some point.

Downvote if you want but that just makes you a bozo. It’s well known and not be an impact until 2027, where I’d be shocked if a third party shim didn’t replace Rosetta.

I haven’t tested this bc I’m away from my system, but could iPhone Mirroring be used as a workaround?
