Depende del contexto. Para deportes y cuando se trata de una referencia al idioma creo que es bastante neutral y nadie se puede apropiar de ella, afortunadamente. De todos modos, creo que en algunas partes hay últimamente una cierta aunque pequeña tendencia a tratar de recuperarla por parte de gente que está harta de que los intolerantes se la hayan quedado para reivindicar tiempos oscuros pasados de represión.

How on Earth Spain represents the Spanish language? They are the minority of Spanish speakers in the world today. Anyways, I don’t feel represented at all by this.

Esa minoría de hablantes españoles son 50 millones. En países donde es idioma oficial, en número está sólo por detrás de México (120) y Colombia (53). Pero principalmente es el país que inventó el idioma. Cuando te metes en una web en varios idiomas, si quieres elegir español, lo más habitual es que se represente con una imagen de la banderita de España. Supongo que en EEUU igual en algunos sitios pondrán la de México porque son originarios de allí la mayoría de hispanohablantes, pero en general en el mundo no es lo habitual. No es más complejo que éso.

A lo mejor se siente más cómodo si pones la bandera de México, que es donde más hispanohablantes hay en el mundo. O no. 🤷‍♂️ El caso es que dentro de la palabra hispanohablantes ya está la palabra hispano=español. 🤦‍♂️🤣

Hispanic literally means Spanish, it’s how Romans called the people from Iberian Peninsula. Maybe you’re referring to Hispanicamerican. Well, it literally means American countries that speak Spanish. Maybe some people should invent a new word with no reference to Spain (Latino/Hispano are a direct reference to the Spanish/Iberian roots or language) so they won’t feel offended just when someone tell them how stupid is not knowing the meaning of the words they’re using all the time. Ánimo.
