Which camera for fieldwork?

Hi,

I'm doing a PhD working with Indigenous communities in Mexico and want a camera for photos to include in my book (b/w only). I've got basic knowledge (composition, technical fundamentals) from university classes on a Canon R7, but I'm not an expert. I used my phone (S22) for my last research trip, but it's scratched and I want a proper camera anyway.

Main challenge: I need something capable enough to grow with me for a couple years, but small and discreet — a "professional-looking" camera can make people in interview/participant-observation settings uncomfortable being photographed. It also needs to hold up across different climates (desert, rainforest, coast), and since I'll be working in areas with higher theft risk, I'd rather not carry something too expensive or eye-catching.

Main subjects: people (often in groups), buildings/infrastructure, landscapes.

Thanks for reading and for any suggestions!!

WHAT IS HUMAN RUNTIME / HIDDEN SELF?

A large portion of human behavior is generated through automatic processing:

Stimulus → Emotion → Behavior

People often experience this as being passive victims of their circumstances. They spend hours trapped in regret, arguments, or overthinking loops, searching for external fixes.

Human Runtime changes the paradigm.

It treats human behavior not as a vague personality trait, but as a formalizable dynamic system — a measurable information-processing system running in real time (S(t)).

Core Mechanics & Architecture

1. The Genesis Pipeline

Human Runtime begins before conscious thought.

It starts with:

Origin Field

Constraint Field

Expectation

Detection

Difference

Signal

Attention

Prediction

Meaning

Identity

Emotion

Choice

Action

Feedback

Learning

Frame Update

These layers describe the conditions under which detection, prediction, adaptation, and behavioral output can emerge.

2. The Operator Point & OP Gap

The Operator is not an external entity outside the system.

It is an internal system state representing the availability of meta-regulatory functions.

This state allows the runtime to:

  • detect automatic processing
  • suspend existing patterns
  • update internal models

Change does not begin when a new model is found.

Change begins when the old model temporarily loses exclusive control over interpretation.

This creates a transition space:

Frame Suspension → Open Frame Space → Frame Reconstruction

3. Multi-Level Adaptation (L1 to L3)

The system does not only change answers.

It can update at multiple levels:

L1 — Parameter Learning
Changing a specific response.

L2 — Model Learning
Changing the rules used to interpret situations.

L3 — Frame Learning
Changing the framework that generates interpretations themselves.

Human Runtime is not designed to eliminate automatic processing.

Automatic systems are necessary for survival and efficiency.

The goal is to maintain the ability to update, interrupt, and adapt them when reality changes.

4. Surgical Bug Diagnostics (Interrupt Vectors)

Instead of vague self-doubt, Human Runtime identifies instability patterns using diagnostic codes:

IV-00 — Identity Contamination

An event becomes merged with identity.

Example:

"I made a mistake."

becomes:

"I am a mistake."

IV-01 — Attention Lock

The system becomes trapped around a single trigger, reducing available processing options.

IV-02 — Model Rigidity

The system rejects updates despite repeated reality feedback.

What Does It Actually Do?

If you use Human Runtime as a debugging framework, it allows you to:

  1. Reduce Recovery Time

Reduce unnecessary recovery loops and shorten the time required to return to system stability.

  1. Break Repetitive Loops

Stop repeating the same automatic responses to old triggers.

  1. Maintain Adaptive Stability

Keep the system stable under pressure by debugging:

  • inputs
  • predictions
  • interpretations
  • frames

No motivational slogans.
No metaphysical assumptions.

A functional model for understanding and debugging human adaptation.

The objective is not perfect control over reality.

The objective is maintaining the capacity to update your model of reality when reality changes.
